There were two Wingate brothers who came to KY about 1800 from Delaware. One, Joseph Wingate, settled in Lexington (Fayette County) and the other, Smith Wingate settled in Franklin County. You might want to look in those two counties for Robert & George.

My earliest identified Wingate, William, came from Delaware via Maryland and settled in Boone County, KY with his wife and children. His wife was Sarah Chase. I have their family group sheets here: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kyboone/FGS/w00001.htm

Mary Lucinda Bacot is on page 47 of the book "Pike County Mississippi 1798-1876 Pioneer Families and Confederate Soldiers"

A reprint of this book is available at www.lukewardconerly.com

History of Pike County Mississippi

100th Anniversary Reprint

This book includes families from Southwest Mississippi including Pike, Marion, Walthall, Amite, Lincoln, Lawrence , Franklin, Copiah, Jefferson, Adams, Wilkinson, Pearl River, Jefferson Davis, Lamar counties MS and surrounding Tangipahoa Parish, Washington Parish Louisiana with many families later migrating to TX and LA

This is an excellent hard to find genealogy source and very collectible.

"Pike County Mississippi 1798-1876, Pioneer Families and Confederate Soldiers, Reconstruction and Redemption" by Luke W. Conerly published in 1909 has been reprinted in its original format. This book documents many pioneer families of Pike and surrounding counties with over 400 surnames and thousands of names including hundreds of Confederate Soldiers It contains many interesting stories and the history of Southwest Mississippi, from pioneer days through the war for southern independence and into reconstruction, written by a Southern Patriot. The Pike County Courthouse burned in the 1880's and much of Pike County history would have been lost without this book. I am the authors great great grandson and this hardbound reprint was created from a pristine 1909 edition. The author was born in China Grove near Tylertown MS in 1841 and elected a 5th Sgt. in the 16th MS Quitman Guards Co. E. He owned and edited the "Magnolia Herald" in Pike County in the 1870's and also edited the "Amite City Democrat" in Amite LA.

The Hardbound reprint is 368 pages with photos.

A partial index of thousands of names in the book can be viewed at www.lukewardconerly.com

A search can be done by request jackson8572@comcast.net

I am VERY interested in your lenghthy information. I just happened upon this thread by the virtue of an entire Wingate family line {my mother's}, but this S.C. version is news to us. I noticed the COPELAND family is linked to my HUTCHINSON family line {my father's} with a man named BLUFORD {SP?} M. COPELAND , born 1/22/1843 in Laurens County, S.C. and died 1/10/1929, buried in County Line Cemetery, Howad Cty, Arkansas. Melvirdy Louisa Hutchinson married and him and had a daughter, Nora. I'm going all the way back to the beginning of this thread if I've lost you.
Wingates in SC and the Copeland name with my Hutchinsons was too hard to resist.
My oldest Wingate is Thomas, 1649-1710, born in England and died in Dorchester, MD.
Is there a connection?

I, too, am interested in this discussion because my Wingates were from Delaware/Maryland. My William Wingate was born about 1774 in Delaware, married Sarah Chase in Maryland, then migrated with his family to Boone County, Kentucky. I have never been able to identify William's parents, but Sarah was the daughter of William and Sarah Chase, from Kent County, Delaware.

There appear to be links with New Hampshire and the name Paine/Payne WINGATE is given in the footnotes.

http://sidneyrigdon.com/dbroadhu/OH/miscoh04.htm#072679

also another WINGATE who is probably not the same one

http://sidneyrigdon.com/dbroadhu/MO/Miss1851.htm#031958
Edward Wingate of Sumter SC....any relation to Darlington or NC Wingates?

Edward Wingate in Sumter, SC 1830 census, m. Winnifred (Winnie) Bradford, mentioned in the will of John Bradford, 1829, also Sumter, SC. Children Mary, Susan, Sarah, William, then Son, John E. found in 1850 census married to Louisa...this is my line. Their children are Hopkins, Wesley, Manley, Leonard, Beatrice, David, George. Does anyone have anything linking these Sumter, SC Wingates to the Darlington Wingates? Or is there a link to the Bladen or Brunswick NC Wingates?? I can't find this Edward's parents.

Have you seen the "History of the Wingate-Winget Family in America"? It was compiled by Ester Mae Winget Warner in 1931. It can be found on Ancestry.com, if you are a member. It mainly pertains to the northern Wingate families, and us Southerners are barely mentioned. You might find some hints in there. I suspect the SC clan came ashore in Wilmington, NC, or in VA. No proof, however, so anything is possible. I'm still trying to get out of SC with my line, so haven't delved into points north or west. Any and all help will be appreciated!!

Goodness! you have gone back much further than I have been able to. I have an Edward Winget (spelling changed) in Sumter, SC in 1830, and haven't been able to trace their migration route, so don't know from wince he came. If you have anything that would lead to his line, please, share. I don't have the Copelands until 1870, but didn't look for them before that....I do know that Anna, age 9 in 1870, married William Manley Wingate, my Ggrandfather by 1880. I haven't looked any further into the Copelands, thus far, as I'm still trying to figure out who Edward's father is. Glad for your interest. If there's anything I can help dig up for you, let me know, and I'll see what I can do. KW

Thank you for your response. I remember Uncle George well. My father used to take us fishing at his pond when we were children. I did find on the 1830 Sumter Census an Edward "Winget", and in 1850 him along with a John E, who I believe to be his son, and his wife Louisa. John E's children listed in 1870 lists Manley and George, and also, next door, Anna Copeland who Manley married as an adult. We need to find out Edward's origins, so I'd love some help with that!
Yes, I didn't go far enough to the 1900 census. The Asa listed is Manley Asa, I believe. That would be my grandfather. And my Father's name was Milton Asa.

Washington Manley Wingate is from the Darlington Wingates. I feel like they are connected, mainly because of the name Manley, but have not been able to prove it yet. I have his entire line, as it was found on a UNC ancestry web page. I don't know if it is correct, but if you would like I can email it to you, if you send me your email. It's 4 pages long and goes back to the 1500s.

She was living in Albany Georgia at the time.

My name is Angelia and I live in Florida. My brother, John, recently moved to Georgia. I am interested in knowing who you are and if you know or are related to the Mitchell County Wingates.

Thank you for your posting and I hope to hear from you soon.

Is anyone still working on this?
I have found some data for William Kelch who married Margaret Elizabeth Wingate in 1887. She later married Tom Lowery according to Ron Camp (2005). I have some data about the Kelch’s at Osceola and Memphis around 1900, and some Kelch descendants thru 1930 census, but I can’t locate Margaret’s origins except for a census record that says her father was b AR and her mother IN.
= Loren
Harrison Wingate b.1788 is in our family Bible

I have copied pages from a Family Bible that includes the following:
Harrison Wingate father of Abbie Augusta born in Haverhill Aug. 7 1788. Sarah Smith mother of Abbie Augusta born in Hallowell Dec (bad copied images)
Marriage(or married, I think and more bad copied images)May 1820

This is from the John D. Stedwell and Clorrinda Ainsworth family bible. There are some birth and death dates that are legible so if anyone is connected to this family please let me know. And if you can connect the Wingates to them that is even better. Louisa M. Stedwell, a daughter of the above, married an Ira Goodrich. I stem from that line. If anyone knows about these folks as well I would appreciate hearing from you.
Many Thanks,
Nicole

Does anyone have any info on him or could you give me a clue as to where to start? I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Julie

My Grandfather, George, was born in 1895, so the George listed on the 1900 Sumter County census would probably be him. I don't see a Manley listed as one of his brothers. There's a Manley and a George listed in the 1870 census, but that would be too old for my Grandfather.

Who's the Washington Manley Wingate that was listed in one of the emails here?

George Wingate was my grandfather. I've just started a Wingate search, so was surprised when I saw this right off. Did you ever get any information on the parents of George, Manley and Lula?

I remember Milton! It's been so long ago that I'm getting everyone confused, but when crossing into W. Columbia on Knox Abbott Dr., someone lived behind that park that's on the left in a big brick corner house. Was that Milton? Also, one of the schools was named after a relative (either an elementary or middle school in W. Columbia) but I can't remember the name of the school. My Dad was Bernard.

My email is cstoudenmier@carolina.rr.com
