My grandmother was May Edna Wingate. She is said to be
the granddaughter of Edward Taylor Wingate who fought for
the Republic of Texas in 1834 at Goliad.

Any information on these names will be appreciated.

I have a book that may provide you with
some info. I will dig it out and see
what's there at my first opportunity.
I'm in Houston, where are you?

Do you happen to have a Lydia Wingate in your family tree, around the Wilton Co., or Runge area of Texas

Dan:
I know this is going to sound crazy but I don't think Edward died at Goliad. My cousin Robert J. (Jim) Wingate has done extensive research on the relatives of my gggf Judge David Robert Wingate. His published book is SAWDUST TO GAVEL and can be found in any of the Genealogy Libraries in Texas. I believe Edward was his brother. I don't have Jim's address but he is listed and he lives in Friendswood, Texas

I am the great-great-granddaugher of Edward Taylor Wingate. My grandmother (Ollie Mae Echols Clements) mother's maiden name was Martha Jane Wingate. Her Mother's father was Edward Taylor Wingate. I have a written note signed by my grandmothers sister, Etta Echols Delgado stating the following:
"Grandpa Wingate's brother-in-law was killed at Goliad the morning of March 27, 1836. Grandpa Wingate made his escape, but Aunt Nettie told me he was shot in the hip, and the bullet, the size of a grape was never removed. She said E. T. Wingate had a sister named Lydia, married Kneeland Taylor, killed at the massacre at Goliad the year of March 27, 1836. Edward T. Wingate saw him killed. You can go to Adjagent General office in Austin and see Edward T. Wingate's name listed there on the mustered out roll. Aunt Nettie said Grandpa Wingate was born in North Carolina. When E. T. Wingate's son, Frank was 7 months old he joined Halls Co. of mounted volunteers in May 1846. He was in the battle of Monterrey in Mexico. He was mustered into service in June and was discharged same year in Oct. 1846. All of this information came from Washington, D.C.. They sent Edna Ferguson a photostat copy of land E. T. Wingate had sold, land given to him for his services in the last mexican war. All records are in our state capitol in Austin. In the adgent generals office. You can see the name of Edward Wingate among the mustered rolls there.
etc. It goes on to say Edna Wingate Ferguson has a copy of the will of William Wingate, it was made in the year 1784 in North Carolina. William Wingate was Edward T. Wingate, Jr.'s grandfather and Edward T. Wingate, Sr.'s father. She goes on to state my grandfather Edward T. Wingate was born in 1802 and died Dec. 1868 of pneumonia. Buried in the Old Clapp cemetery near Trinity, Texas. Initials E. T. Wingate carved on the stone by his two sons, Edward Wingate, Jr. and Frank Wingate."
I have a little more info if you would like to have it. I have just started searching for info on Edward T. Wingate and would appreciate any information you may have.
Thank you.
