My family came from the Wyoming Willford family. A quick list up my tree so far is:
Samuel -> Joseph Willford & Mary Campbell -> Joseph Willford & Mary Enochs -> Dougal Willford & Elizabeth Robinson -> John Wesley Willford & Jane Palmory -> Fred Willford & Ruby Huffman -> John Wesley Willford & Yvonne Bonser -> Patrick Willford & Ellen Olson -> John Willford & Janet Bartman. I would really appreciate any information that you have that i can use to fill in the holes and lack of confirmations in my family tree.
I was born in Whittier, California in 1946 and now live in Danville, CA.
Thanks for your help,
-Pat

Re: Joseph Willford American Revolution Patriot

Since the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution was formed in 1890, women have researched their lineage to determine if their ancestors served in or supported the American Revolution; i.e, serving in the militia, the regular army, paid supply tax or paid taxes and many more.

When I joined the DAR I provided a link to an ancestor whose service had already been proven by another DAR member. I just had to prove that I descended from that person. In the case of Joseph Willford, he had never been listed and, therefore, is considered a "new" patriot. As a new patriot, the proof requirements are more stringent. Obviously this is because so many more daughters can submit applications against that patriot. This is why some of the publications we have been using, such as the Willfords in America, couldn't be used to prove the relationships. It required me to submit 56 additional pages of analysis to prove the relationship between Joseph Sr. and Joseph Jr. and Susanna.

That said, since you are related, all you have to do to become a member of the DAR is contact your local chapter to seek an invitation, complete the application process by linking to my application data (you can request a copy of the file through DAR.org), submit it to your chapter who will then submit it to National for review and approval. It may seem like a lengthy process, but it really isn't as new mmembers usually receive approval within 3 months.

After you have been approved and receive your member number you can submit supplemental applications for other family members who may be eligible. Again, this information is available on DAR.org through the DAR Ancestor Database.

You can contact me off line for more information. I hope this helps you and other Joseph Willford descendents.
Kathy

Carol, I too am related to Joseph and Mary (Campbell) Willford through Joseph Jr. and Mary Ann Enochs. I prepared a DAR application for Joseph Sr; but unfortunately they (DAR) would not accept "Willford Family in America" nor "History of Fillmore Co MN" as proof of the link between Joseph and Joseph/Mary Campbell. The DAR did not question Joseph's service during the American Revolution, so I am really stumped on how to substantiate the above two references.

Somewhere I read of the existance of a Willford-Rich family bible, which might prove helpful. I am looking for anything that would validate the family oral histories. Thank you so much for any help you can provide. Kathy

Re: Willford

Chuck, sorry for the confusion. Yes, I received the documents from the Willford Family in America, for which I was extremely greatful and used as proof for the Joseph Willford Sr DAR application. However, DAR requires a higher level of proof. They wouldn't even accept the family reference from "the History of Fillmore County, MN". However, I believe I can establish a familial link between Susanna Willford Graham to Joseph and Mary Ann Enochs Willford through land records. Therefore, I am looking for anything that may have been written that links Joseph and Mary Ann to Joseph and Mary. DAR did not question Joseph Sr. service in the American Revolution, so if I can sort out this one link, we would have an authenticated patriot.

I will, however, still try to argue the point that it was Mary Ann who relayed the information about the family history. Unfortunately, since the county of birth for her siblings was incorrect, they (DAR) can also find other facts incorrect. I just have to find a way to prove that the family link is accurate.

There was mention of a Willford Rich Bible which could be a possibility. Or maybe a letter? or church records? or wills/land records. Anything you can think of would be great. I am even trying to go through Mary Ann's siblings to see if I can find a reference back to Joseph and Mary. So I have a lot a lot of pending inquiries and several more trips to the local LDS to find this elusive proof.

If successful, I will indeed post the results. Thank you.
I am trying to complete a DAR application for Joseph Willford, married to Mary Campbell. However, the primary source documents (History of Fillmore Co. MN and the Willford Family in America) were not accepted as proof of a link between Joseph and his son Joseph who married Mary Ann Enochs. I saw on the Lobdell/Krotz Genealogy a reference to the William and Sarah Rich Willford family Bible. If you or anyone has that information (in it's original form) I would greatly appreciate it as this could prove that Wm is the son of Joseph and Mary. Thank you.

My Grandfather, Arthur Wiley King -(married to Florence Beck-King in 1941 in Green Bay WI), was one of the brothers of your mother, Minnie Althea! Which also then makes my Great Grandmother and Grandfather: Minnie Myrtle Wiley & Albert Edward Koenig - "King in German Swiss" (as my grandfather specified in a brief letter/book about my great grandmother -including a picture of Minnie Myrtle swinging from a tree swing- that he made for me back 1988).

During WWII in 1942 my grandmother lived with Minnie and Albert in Ames, Iowa.

I'm fascinated with the fact to know related in some respect to Mary Campbell & Joseph Willford, but I'm trying to follow the list of descendants you have written out, but get lost somewhere about if Mary & Joseph are my gggggg(x however many) grandparents, or great aunt/uncle or whatnot.

There also sees to be some rumor on the King side of my family that there possibly was some type of Native American (I've heard Sioux) in my grandfather's side. But my mother and aunts say my grandfather was always closed-mouth about that topic (perhaps it just pertained to the Mary Campbell story that he was tying to protect or hide?). But I'm trying to trace that too to see if it is true and there could any Native American in my blood, or indeed just a rumor. Would love to hear any thoughts!

Hello again,

I have pictures of Clinton Willford (circa 1918), Mary Jane (Edwards) WIllford, Eva May (Willford) White, Leonard White (spouse of Eva May), and Mary Ann Enochs. I also have some of Mary Jane's parents, sister, and nephew, but those I'm sure wouldn't interest you. The image of Mary Ann Enochs is supposedly from 1800, but she looks far older (to me)than the 18 years old that would have made her. My pictures came down through the family via Eva May (Willford) White, who was my grandmother. I have all of them scanned into the computer, if you would like them. I would be VERY interested in the pictures you have, especially Daniel and Ellen Malinda. For some reason, I've developed a special fondness for her; she's the only one so far that I've actually ordered a copy of the death records for.

Thank you for taking the time to post the descendants you have for Joseph Willford. I only had his wife and a daughter, Caroline, but no dates for either of them.

I will check out the links you added for the tax records. I did have them listed as Cumberland county, but had the offspring spread out between York and Greene.

I do have a question for you: on the photo of Mary Ann Enochs, and in all other references to her through my family, she is listed as Mary Ann Einex. I've also seen Einex a few times while doing research on her. Have you noticed this as well? I didn't know if it was, perhaps, the way the name was spelled originally, and was changed, or...? Any thoughts on this would be welcome.

Linda

My line comes down through Daniel Willford, and his (second)wife Ellen Melinda Joy. I have 'your' Joseph in my tree, and his wife Phoebe, but nothing else for them. I'm guessing they had children? ;) Sorry, couldn't resist.

I used your directions to open the Lack Township tax information (in fact I saved a .pdf of it for future reference). There are 30 listings for Campbell in the Lack Township document, and I found 3 mentions of Wilford/Willford. Thank you. The other books listed still only show just a snippet of information, due to copyright laws. I can appreciate that, but their links to buy the books come to naught. Not one of the places carries the books! I would LOVE to obtain a copy of the book by William Willford, as I can't help but think it would have a lot of information AND pictures. Have you ever found a place that carries them, or has them as reference books?

I have the same information back as far as Samuel and Sarah on the Willford side. For the Campbell side I have Francis Douglas listed as wife to William Campbell. My family had William as being born in St. Ninians, Stirling, Scotland, but other references seem to suggest William was from Ireland, and Frances was from Scotland. Most potential sources seem to agree it was a Scottish/Irish blend, but which was which? Finding a definite name would certainly help!

By the way, I have a photo of Mary Ann Enochs Willford, if you are interested?

Hi,
I just read your post tonight, and have a few questions for you. You mentioned the book, "History and Genealogy of the Willford Family in America", by William Willford; do you happen to have a copy, or know where one can be purchased or viewed? Also, the links you gave for Google Books show the volumes you mentioned, but they are not available for viewing in their entirety, and the places listed to buy them do not have them. Again, do you have copies of the books, or know where they can be procured? Any information would be vastly appreciated!

My line comes down from Joseph and Mary (Enochs) Willford, and had hit somewhat of a roadblock with Joseph and Mary (Campbell) Willford. The information out there seems to be conflicting... I've seen several different names suggested for her mother.

LF

Hi, just noticed your posting with the children of Jacob and Catherine. I also have been doing research on this family (I am descended from their daughter, Sarah Jane, who married Emanuel Allerding) There was one item that I had a question about ...you had their oldest daughter, Catherine Margaret, married to Louis D. Willford, but I have that she was married to Jacob Hinkle on 29 May 1862. Was she married to this Louis before Jacob Hinkle? Do you know who Louis' parents were?

Also, just curious on where you got the children's middle names and full birth dates/death dates. This is wonderful information, and I was quite excited, as I had only what I could gather from census records and what is written on the tombstone. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Willford in Lack Township, Cumberland Co., PA 1774

William Willford who wrote "History and Genealogy of the Willford Family in America", and others after him have identified York County as the place of Joseph Willford the immigrant's marriage and of his and Mary Campbell's residence until some time between 1777 and 1779. Having searched in vain for Joseph Willford and his family in York County or its environs, I decided to try a search for Joseph Willford and Mary Campbell's family in other parts of Pennsylvania.

Since both our family tradition and William Willford's "History and Genealogy..." place Joseph in Cumberland Co., PA before his marriage (although our tradition says that he first was in Bucks Co. for a short time), I decided to look in Cumberland Co. for the Campbells with whom he was associated. The National Archives of England stipulate that Joseph's death sentence for stealing a horse was commuted to seven years' servitude in the colonies. Because of that, I figured he wouldn't show up by name on any official records until about seven years after his transportation to America which was in 1766.

One of my searches was for the man after whom Joseph Willford's and Mary Campbell's fourth child, Dougal Campbell Willford, was named. I picked Dougal Campbell because his name is not as common as that of Mary's father who our family tradition recalls as William Campbell. I found a Dougal Campbell in Lack (now Tuscarora) Township, Cumberland Co., PA on a tax assessment for 1763 (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~milliken/alguss/lac...). The report of the tax assessment is set up so that, after the initial mention of the person, it does not mention his name again. I wondered if I had found the Dougal Campbell which appears on the 1790 census of Washington (Greene) County, PA, together with other individuals later associated with the Willfords.

According to our family tradition, Mary Campbell's father was named William, and she had two brothers named William and Daniel. As I looked further into the same document that mentioned Dougal Campbell I found a William Campbell, a Daniel Campbell added to the roles in 1769, and a William Campbell Jr. added in 1775. All of these were living in the same township of Lack in the Tuscarora Valley. Then, by changing the spelling of Joseph Willford's surname to Wilford, I found him just where he might be expected, appearing on the roles for the first time in 1774. We know he was transported in 1766, he served seven years until about july or august of 1773 and appeared as a freeman on the 1774 tax roles.

I believe this information definitely shows that Joseph Willford and Mary Campbell did not live from 1770 to to 1778 (or so) in York County, but in Cumberland County, in Lack Township. And their children born up to at least 1882 should probably be shown as born in Lack, Cumberland. Also in question is whether their marriage was in York County.

Additional information on Lack Township and the Willfords' and Campbells' time there is available from the Pennsylvania Archives, Third Series, William Henry Egle ed., Harrisburg 1897 which is available from http://books.google.com. (The specific URL is too long to copy here.)

Our family --on my mother's side-- has preserved a tradition that Mary Campbell's father's name is William Campbell and that her mother's name is Elizabeth. I am descended from Caroline Willford (my gg-grandmother) who was daughter of Joseph Willford by his second wife, Phoebe Jane Hill. This Joseph is the son of Joseph Willford who married Mary Ann Enochs who, in turn was son of Joseph Willford who was deported from England to America in 1766 and who married Mary Campbell.

Charles Odin Willford's ancestors?

I have just begun searching a month ago as I start my genealogy of my Willford family. I have read several posts about Joseph Willford and Mary Campbell.

I am trying to find a linkage from my gfather Charles Odin Willford, b. 1867, d. 1912 and his father. Information is very scare, at best. I know he married a Renna Fellers and had three sons, Milton 1887, Carl 1894 and Orville 1896. Renna died 1896. Charles then married my gmother Bonnie Kate Shufelt abt 1903. That union birthed Mildred 1904, Dorothy 1906 and my father Charles Hyland 1911 (he was really born 1910).

Has anyone run across gfather's name in your research that you would like to share?

Charles Orville Willford b. 3-29-1943
I recall conversations with my mother in which she spoke of Mary Ann Enochs and her family. She mentioned several possible slightly different pronunciations for the Enochs surname. Sometimes, on censuses, it is written Enoch. Mary Ann had a younger brother named Joseph who became a prominent and well known person; he received some military and government appointments. Joseph chose Eneix for his surname, and consistently used that spelling throughout his life.

The photograph you have of Mary Ann Enochs is probably not prior to the 1830's or 1840's, since photography was not generally available before that time. I would certainly appreciate receiving a copy of the image you have of her. You don't also have a photo of her husband, Joseph, do you? You may contact me by email at dvdmoore!ix.netcom.com (substitute the "at" symbol for the exclamation mark). When I receive your email address I'll send you the photo files I have of Daniel Willford, of Ellen Malinda Joy, and the other photo I have of Mary Ann Enochs.

The following link also has early tax information for Lack Township, Cumberland Co., PA:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~milliken/alguss/lac...

I already noted a link to the same tax information, but this page has the advantage that it gives some background and includes the bibliographic information for the source of the data.

Upon rereading my previous post, I notice that, at one point, I went from writing about the Joseph Willford who married Mary Ann Enoch to writing of Joseph Willford the immigrant in the next paragraph without distinguishing one Joseph Willford from the other. I hope anyone who reads it will figure it out.

David Moore

It is good to hear from you. You said that Joseph Willford and Mary Ann Enochs Willford are your ancestors. Which of their children do you descend from? I am a descendant of their son Joseph Willford by his marriage to Phoebe Jane Hill.

I tried the links on my previous post. All except the last one are working, so you should be able to find the information I cited. For the book which contains tax information on Lack Township of Cumberland County, PA, you should be able to find "State and Supply Transcripts of the County of Cumberland for the Years 1778, 1779, 1780, 1781, 1782, and 1785" in _Pennsylvania Archives_, third series, vol. XX (Harrisburg: Wm. Stanley Ray, State Printer, 1897), by doing the following:

1. Go to books.google.com
2. Enter into the search field the following (quotes and all): "lack township" cumberland campbell
3. High on the resultant list should appear, "State and Supply Transcripts of the County of Cumberland for the years 1778...." Click that link.
4. The resultant page (p. 728) has a mention of William Campbell, in Lack Township, owner of 300 acres.
5. Near the bottom right of the page you should see a box where you can enter search terms entitled "Search in This Book." If you enter the term "Lack," it will give you a list of the pages where Lack Township is mentioned and the pages where the records for Lack Township begin. You may also find some references under "willford" and "wilford" and "campbell." The book is fully available online and searchable. I hope you enjoy searching and browsing it.

I think most researchers agree that Joseph Willford, the immigrant's, father is Samuel Willford of Lubenham England; his wife was Elizabeth Bliss. Samuel's father was also named Samuel Willford, and his wife was Jemimah. This Samuel Willford's father was also Samuel Willford and his wife's name was Sarah. Concerning the Campbell Side of the family, through oral traditions collected in the 1960's my family know Mary Campbell's father as William Campbell and her mother's name as probably Elizabeth. Again, according to family tradition, Mary's brothers' names were William and Daniel. Dougal Campbell is not mentioned as one of Mary's brothers in our tradition, but it is obvious that he was an important person to Joseph and Mary Campbell Willford, since they named one of their children Dougal Campbell Willford. Oral traditions in other lines of descendance differ from my family's tradition in several ways on these matters.

I believe the information from the tax rolls of Lack Township in (then) Cumberland (now Juniata) County, Pennsylvania helps to clarify several points in the history of the Willfords and Campbells.

I have photos of both Daniel Willford and his wife Ellen Malinda (or Melinda) Joy. Also, among descendants of Daniel, I have photographs of Daniel's son Clinton Dwain Willford, and among the latter's children, I have a photo of Eva May Willford. I also have one of Daniel's daughter, Hattie Willford. All of these, of course, are digital copies of copies. These were sent to me by Heather Clark who is married to Ralph Clark, a Willford descendant.

The photo I have of Mary Ann Enochs (also a digital copy of a copy) was taken at the Edwards & Peake studio in Dodge Center, MN. She is quite elderly, wearing a black shawl with her hands crossed in her lap. If the photograph you have is different. I would be very interested to see it.

The descendants of Joseph Willford, son of Joseph and Mary Ann Enochs Willford, that I have in my database are as follows:

Descendants of Joseph WILLFORD
07 Feb 2008
======================================================================================================================
1. Orlie William WILEY (b.1 Aug 1892 d.31 Mar 1966-Coulee Dam,Washington)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am related to the Willfords through my mother Minnie Althea King (she always used her second name and was known as Althea). She married Lawrence Moore. The traditional family information that has come down to me was from her and from my maternal grandmother Minnie Myrtle Wiley. Note that I have Joseph Willford's first wife's name as Margaret Paterson; most others have it as Margaret Sutton. This latter may be correct, since I recall my mother's saying that she was unsure of that surname.

Joseph Willford appears in the Pennsylvania Archives book on page 113 listed as Joseph Wellford for the year 1778. On page 188 he is somehow listed twice for 1779. On page 323 he is listed as Joseph Wilford for the year 1780. On page 451 he is listed as Joseph Wilford for the year 1781. On page 596, he is listed as Joseph Willford for 1782. But he does not appear in Lack Township on the list for 1785 (pp. 728-731).

On a site which includes tax records from Lack Township, Cumberland County, PA from an earlier period (http://www.rootsweb.com/~pajuniat/taxes63.htm), we find that Joseph Willford was present on the tax rolls from 1774 onward (look for "Wilford"). So it seems safe to say that Joseph was in Lack township as a free man from 1774 until some time between 1782 and 1785.

The oral tradition that our family has on Mary Campbell's father is that he was Scotch-Irish. This term refers to Scots, and later, people of Scots descent who had come to northern Ireland to receive land offered to them there free of charge, by the British Crown. Many of these people, who were later persecuted in Ireland when a king of a different religious persuasion came to the throne in England, immigrated to America. They were of a pioneering spirit and tended to push the boundaries of european settlement westward which brought them into conflict with the Native Americans. There were Scotch-Irish communities in the general area where we find the Campbells in Lack Township of Cumberland Co., PA.

Regards to all,
David Moore

My name is Kirk Willford and currently live in Santa Fe New Mexico. Most of my family lives in Filmore County Minnesota where they arrived in 1854 from Hancock County Ohio. My great, great, grandfather was William Willford anf I think his father was Charles Willford who brought the family there. I think the families are connected because I remeber hearing when I was young that our original annestor came from Leicestershire, England. I would be interested in the information you have. Thank you, Kirk
