I am trying to find the parents of Permelia Whitton/Whitten who married Stephen Gilbert, in 1780, Greene Co., PA. Stephen Gilbert was in the Revoluntionary War and a file for his pension application by his widow Permelia can be found in ancestry. There is a wealth of information in this file for the Gilberts. Permelia is trying to prove that she is the wife of Stephen Gilbert. Included in the file is what she calls a "Power of Attorney" for the sale of real estate. This document is really difficult to read but what I have been able to make out it is for the sale of real estate from the estate of her grandfather Robert Whitten. The land is located in Philadelphia County, PA. There are tax records for Robert Whitten, Moreland, Philadelphia Co., PA for 1779. the date of the power of attorney is in 1782.
I have done searches for Robert Whitton and in the Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1819, there is a reference for Robert Whitton and "son". The decedent mentioned in this record is his father Thomas Whitton, prove date 22, Nov 1768. Also listed is grandchildren and one is Pamelia Whitton.
I have seen family trees that also have reference to this will that include the family of Thomas Whitton's daughter Ann b 1726 and married Jeremiah Dungan b 1721 d 1785. He is related to Francis Latham of Rhode Island-his father being one of her three husbands. Jeremiah moved from Rhode Island to Pennsylvania. I have another branch in my family tree related to Francis Latham. Another daughter Mary Whitton is said to of married a Dungan and is listed this way in the Will.
I believe Thomas and Robert Whitton is the family I am looking for Permelia Whitton Gilbert ancestors. I am not sure if this family belonged to the Horsham Friends Meeting-Quakers-or if the Robert Whitton listed in the Historical Collections of Gwynedd, Welch immigrants, is this family. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
