Whittle/Peet family confusion - any advice welcome

Classification: Query
Surnames: Whittle, Peet
Hi - I have been tracing my family tree for about 25 years but am now stuck with a confusing branch of my husband's family which I would like fresh ideas about please.
Albert Edward was born Albert Edward Peet, name changed on the census to Edward Albert Peet and then at some point he changed his name to Whittle which is what the family continued to be known as.
On his marriage certificate it said his father's name was Thomas Peet, but after checking all the parish registers and ordering quite a few wrong birth certs for Thomas I never found him - however I did find a Thomas Whittle.
I decided to try tracing Thomas Whittle and discovered he was the illegitimate son of Maria Whittle, Maria continued to have two more children one she used Peet as a middle name and the youngest actually took the name Peet and my this time she was living with Alfred Peet.
It then became interesting as on tracing forward for Thomas Whittle I discovered he completely disappears in 1861 and that is when Thomas Peet appears.
So my dilemma is that even though my gut instinct and years of experience tell me I have the right family and they just kept changing names - how do I prove it.
Do any Notts researchers know of any odd indexes that might show this sort of thing.
I am travelling to Notts in 2 weeks time (July 2010) and am quite happy to do the research but would just like some local pointers if anyone can help.
Fingers crossed
Rowena
