I found a follow up, but he is listed at James. P. Whittemore
The Oregonian
April 12, 1903
page 5

CAME TO OREGON AS A CHILD
Pendleton, Or. April 11

James P. Whittemore, an early Oregon pioneer died here Thursday. Mr. Whittemore came to Oregon when a child in 1852, in company with his father and mother Thomas M. and Nancy Whittemore, both of whom have been dead for a number of years. He married Miss Helen Seadon in 1877. All of their seven children are living.

I found a wedding announcement of a Ruby Whittemore from Pendleton who married Dr. H.E. Morris in May of 1910. If you would like it, you can contact me and I will e-mail it to you. It has a picture of the two, but is not a really good picture.
Eellitta
russetred@msn.com

I had a family tree for the whittemores dating back over 1000 years. I do not recall that name but do know all whittemores in the U.S.A. are ancesters of Thomas Whittemore. There is a book written about the family tree from back then. Also our family tree has been reconized by the U. S. congress as being true and authentic back in 1897. My name is william Whittemore My father is also william His father was eugene, and his father was william and his father was josiah and his father was josiah. The last josiah listed fought in the revolunary war. In mass. I have been doing some research on the Whittemore's because I didn't know much about them growing up and always wondered. I have met one other cousin from my posting. That has been fun sharing with each other as time permits. She has been a great help. My father is Charles Whittemore and I have an older brother Kevin 38 still in Duval county. I haven't been close to my fathers side of the family in a very long time but it seems that we are related. I would definitely like to learn my family back ground. There was a Kaleb Whittemore from Nassau county that just passed away this week from an car accident age 16 which I have been trying to identify whether he is family. Please let me know if you know of our heritage, Brian

Re: Whittemore Sisters NC

Hi. I am descended from Frances "Fannie" Whittemore (b. May 1845) who married Thomas V. Coleman (through their son William Edward, and William's daughter Bertha Edna Coleman). I found Fannie living with Jane and James in the 1850 Rockingham Co., NC census. The head of the house is given as Susan Whittemore (b. ~1810). Fannie is also living with Susan in the 1860 census, also. I am assuming this is her mother. There is no father given either year, so he may have been deceased or left his family.

There are several other Whittemores in the 1850 Rockingham census, and I believe they are the children of the only elder Whittemores in Rockingham Co. in 1850, whose name is Clement Whittemore (1786-1854; wife - Martha Patsey Browder, 1783 - 1872). The names of Clement's children I have seen are Nancy, Talitha, William W., Sterling A., Isham Browder, Augustus C., and Martha Amanda (all born b/w 1809 & 1823). Sterling is said to have died in 1817, and all the other males were listed separately with families in the 1850 census, with the exception of Isham, who was living/working at a differet residence at the time. I do not believe he married based on future census records.

It's possible that there were other children who moved away. I have seen census records of Whittemores in other states that list the birth state as North Carolina, and I believe there were some in Davidson Co. at the same time. Strangely, the names are sometimes spelled differently in the same county and year (e.g. Whitmore, Whittemoore, Whittimore).

If anyone would like to share information or would like more info, please let me know.

Hi, I found William G in the 1810 census & it looks as if he was 45 or above. He wouldn't have been our Gower because Gower was in TN by that time, but I've thought he maybe Gower's father or an uncle. I am having the DNA test run on my brother to trace our Whittemore line to see if we are descended from Thomas Whittemore who came from Hitchens, England. It'll be several weeks before we know anything, but I'll let you know what I find out. In the meantime, I'm still searching for Gower's parents. Sometime in the late 1700's the Whittemore's (Whitemore) came into NC. There was a Charles, Howell & Jesse who all seem to be closely connected in that they married & appear on different documents from Orange &/or Caswell Co., NC during those times. Gower was there too & married in Caswell in 1798. Hopefully we can keep piecing together the clues until we find a connection that leads to their parents. I look forward to whatever you find out & I'll keep you posted on what I find.

Marilyn

Hi Debbie, Yes we have gotten the results back & we don't match Thomas Whitmore from Hitchens, England. In fact we don't match anyone who has taken the test yet. We do have several 12 point matches for others with different surnames & one 36/37 point match with a Holcomb family. I haven't followed up on that yet because we having a deeper test run on the DNA to clarify it a little further.

I don't know if not matching any of the Whittemore's so far tested means we are not Whittemore's due to adoption somewhere along the lines or if there is another branch of Whittemore's who came into the country apart from the ones that are descended from Thomas. Hopefully we'll find out before too long.

I am still looking for Gower's parents & have just recently received some information from Brunswick Co., VI where there seems to be some names we've run across in NC...Jessee & Howell as well as 2 William Whittemore's (a father & son). It seems that the younger William died & may have left his children in the care of a Gower family. This sounds a little promising, but then it may be a rabbit trail. I'll let you know what I find out.

Have a great day,
Marilyn

Hi Debbie, Thank you for your reply to my message. I've thought for some time that Gower was a middle name. Where might I find the information on the William G Whitemore from Brunswick, VA? Also, my information on Gower Whitemore is on my Ancestry.com site under Whittemore family. Just go to search, family trees and type in Gower Whittemore born abt 1780. I'm just guessing on his birthday. He was married to Martha Patsy Dickens from Caswell Co., NC in 1798. They stopped for a while in Jackson Co., TN and then moved onto either Cannon or Coffee Co., TN. Gower died in 1815 either from illness or injuries as a result of the Battle of New Orleans. Patsy filed and was made administrator of his estate in 1817 & she sold his discharge paper for $17.00. Patsy died in 1826 & is buried in Hopewell Baptist Cemetery in Woodbury, Cannon Co., TN. There is more on my Ancestry site, but I'll be happy to share with you whatever I have found out. Currently I am awaiting some information from NC concerning the possibility that Martha may have borne an illigetimate child in 1794. Once I get that info I am going to pass it along to a Dickens descendant who also has been looking into this. Which Whitemore family are you looking into? Let me know if I can help.

Marilyn

Hello = my name is Nancy Jean Whittemore Edwards (Maury) Walker. I am decended from the first Thomas Whittemore to come to this country, Charlestown, Ma. prior to 1645 I believe Your W"s came from this line. A Benjamin "W" moved to Fredericksburg, Va. and it is probably his progeny that travelled south ad west. More info on the decendency of Whittemores is available.
Marilyn,

How has your research been going? Did you get the results back on your deeper DNA testing? I have been so curious about Gower's ancestry.
I found out something about my Whittemore ancestry. I recievied some notes recorded by an old ancestor who passed them down through their children. (These notes were known knowledge back then by our family) Apparently, John Robert Whittemore's father, also named John, was the first one to come from England to America. He had to have been born in the mid/late 1700's in the UK, because John Robert was born Oct. 1799 in NC/SC. The eldest John apparently settled in Ball Haller in Buncombe, NC.
Since both of our Whittemore ancestors aren't decendents of Thomas Whittemore the immigrant from Englan, and they both settled in NC,could they be related somehow? It brings up more red flags for me. It may be something to investigate.
You can always email me at dellis9@tampabay.rr.com Would love to hear from you again.

Debbie

Whittemore's from Buncombe NC

John Whittemore came from England when he was a young man with a family name Roberts. He married a lady with the last name of Pinner. They settled in Ball Holler, NC, the first holler after you turn off Mars Hill Hwy heading toward Barnardsville NC.
Thier son "Johnny" Robert Whittemore was born 10-17-1799. John Robert Whittemore married Sarah Hurst on 8-18-1822. They settled in Big Ivy, and was the first family on Whittemore Branch, near Barnardsville, NC. Thier children were Martin, George W, Margaret (Peggy), James Braxton (Big Jim), Kate, Jane, and John Alex.
John Whitemore only used one T in his Whittemore name. His son Martin was a Magistrate. He was the one who put the other T in Whittemore. Martin served on the Confederate side of the Civil War. The song Dixie always made him cry. He was in Richmond when the war ended. He wore a yarn shawl and and a sissor tail coat, and was heavy set.
George W. Whittemore was slender and long legged. They said that he could cross his legs and wrap them around each other twice. He also served on the Confederate side of the Civil War. He drove a bull to to haul his wood. He plowed with oxen.
Margaret (Peggy) married Jack Banks.
John Alex married a Crow Indian named Matilda. He served in the Civil War and died in Richmond Virginia of Typhoid Fever. When Matilda and the family went to retrieve his body, it could not be found.
James Braxton Whittemore was my great grandfather. He married a little woman from Indiana name Fanny. She wore size 3 shoes. He fought in the Civil War. He later died in a gun fight between his Son Bud and Doc Roberts. He had run up where they were arguing and he was killed in the shooting. Bud shot Doc Roberts, but was later cleared.
Jane had a child out of wedlock name C. Columbus Whittemore. He was called Lum. His father was thought to be Reuben Lisenbee from Marshall, NC. She never married him. Lum fought in the Civl war, but somehow ended up on the Union side.
Kate married Erwin Ingle.
This information was passed down from the family. I have found information on John Robert Whittemore's children, but I don't know much about him or his father who came from England. Can anyone help?

Debbie

Randy,

I have been researching the Whittemore family from Big Ivy for a few years. I am happy to see that we share the same family roots. I have written a manuscript on it from all my research, and have given it to my family. I believe that it could help you connect some dots, and I would be happy to send it to you. How far back have you gotten? I have gotten back to John Robert Whittemore b. 1799 NC or SC. He was the first one on Whittemore Branch in Buncombe Co. I can't seem to get past him, but I am working on it. I would love to read that Dillingham book. Where do you get it? I would love to share information with you.
Hello Marilyn,

I went to the library, and didn't find much about Gower Whittemore. I imagine that in a different library I might be able to find more, but I just couldn't find all I was hoping for. What I did find you probably already have, which was....

Gower Whittemore witnessed or was a bondsman for the marriage between Jeremiah Dickens and Rebecca Dickens (Cawell NC Marriage Bond 1778-1860, page 25)

Gower's wife Martha Patsey Dickens was listed in the NC Bastardy Bonds book in Caswell Co 3 times (probably for the same child.) I have read that it is possible that Baxter B Dickens was actually the illigitimate child of Patsey Dickens-Whittemore.

Also in Caswell Co. NC there were....

Aniva E Whittemore who married James M Blackwell Sept 16, 1856 (Caswell NC Bond 1778-1860)

Charles Whitmore witnessed or was the bondsman for Sally Whitmore and James Smith June 8, 1825 (Caswell NC Marriage bond 1778-1860.)

Davis W Whittemore found in the 1820 census records

Gomes Whitemore found in the 1800 census records.

Howell Whitmore/Whitamore found in the 1810 and 1820 census.

Jemima J Whitmore married John B Lausen Sept. 29, 1827(Caswell NC Marriage bond 1778-1860)

Jonas Whitmer found in 1850 census

Lewis V Whittemore was a wittness or bondsman for the marriage of Henry Bauldwin and Martha Murphy on Nove 26th 1825 (Caswell NC Marriage Bond 1778-1860), was found in the 1820 and 1830 census. He was named in the will of John Hudnall in 1814 being given a tack of land, and two negros Milly and Natt, with chest of drawers and a book case.

Lucy Whitmore found in 1810 census

Nancy Whitmore found in the 1840 and 1850 census

Richard Whitmore found in the 1810-1830 census, also wittnessed a marriage between Benjamin Warren and Louisa Pleasant in Aug 12, 1833 (Caswell NC Marriage bond 1778-1860.)

William L Whittemore wittnessed or was a bondsman for the wedding of John Mason and Sarah Toney

I hope that this could help you some. Keep in contact.

Debbie

William G Whitemore was found in the 1810 census records for St andrews Brunswick VA. I wonder if the G stands for Gower? I plan to investigate this further. I have read about Patsey Dickens possibly having a child out of wedlock. His name was suposively Baxter Dickens. The person who wrote it was a Dickens, and it was only a speculation. Let me know what you come up with.
I am searching John Robert Whittemore's linage from Buncombe NC. I believe he might be a descendent of Thomas Whittemore the Immigrant. I am working on a theory, and in the process of gathering information. So, I am actually looking at all clues on the Whittemores and Whitmores from SC, NC, VA, TN, and GA. I will be happy to share what I have, and will tell you more about what I have found this weekend when I have more time.

Debbie

Have you got the results of the DNA tests yet? Are you a decendant of Thomas Whittemore from England? I am interested in knowing if Gower is of English descent.

Debbie

Marilyn,
Thankyou for the information, which was quite suprising. Please keep me posted.
I would like to know more about the William Whittemore who died and left his children to a Gower family. Seems like an interesting coicidence. I have seen thier names before as well, but I don't know much about them. I belive from my research that the father was a taylor.
I too am still digging. I will let you know if I run across anything new.

Debbie

What if Gower was a middle name? I have found in many records that people used their middle names instead. There is a "Willim G. Whitemore" who was found in Brunswick VA. Could this be him? Maybe this is someting to look into.
Let me know if this helps?
What information do you have on Gower's family from TN? I am researching the Whittemore tree, and would love to share.

Thanks,
Debbie

I believe that Clement, born 1786 was the son of Clement Whittemore, born 1755 in Virginia.

If this is so, Clement (1786) had a brother named William Whittemore, born 1793 (in Virginia). He married a woman named Sarah (Sallie). They had 5 children I know of including Elvira, Mary, Lewis, Clem (thus the likelihood of William and Clement being brothers) and William B.

William Whittemore died around 1865 in Davidson County, Tennessee.

If any of this is incorrect or more info available, please let me know.

I am looking for Whittemore males with South East Virginia ancestry for DNA testing. Some did migrate to North Carolina -areas from Henderson, Durham and Raleigh and SE of there. I believe they came from Surry, Prince George, Chesterfield counties in Virginia -- but also may have migrated from Brunswick, Lunenburg, or other SE VA counties.
Gary, Can you provide some more information -- your father's name and his date or year of birth? Was he living in 1930? If so, do you know where? The census data has names and years of birth -- It might thus have his family information, and that would help look for others. (The 1940 census information is not yet available, but should be in a couple of years - I think it has to be 70 years after taken.

I had Whitmores in Chesterfield area 1830s - and later. It would really help to have some names. Have you considered a DNA test? There is a Whitmore group with a group discount -- at Family Tree DNA. FamilyTreeDNA.com. My cousin had a 37 marker test and we are looking for anyone else who might match. Thanks! Maggie Hodge

Hello,
My name is Randy Whittemore. My father's name was John Thomas Whittemore, Grandfather J. Gudger Whittemore, Great Grandfather John Franklin Whittemore. I have been doing some research as well trying to research the Whittemore family name. I have come across many other Whittemore's in Buncombe County NC. but am not sure how to connect the dots just yet. I was reading in a book called the Dillingham's of Big Ivey which listed a J. Martin Whittemore which dated him in the area of Big Ivey in the early 1800's. I would be interested in any help you could give me to help connect the dots. Good luck hunting.
Randy,

Your grandfather J Gudger Whittemore was the son of John Franklin Whittemore. John Franklin Whittemore was my grandfather's brother. Their father was James Braxton Whittemore, who fought in the civil war, and then later died during a gun fight. Do you know the story? I can tell it to you. I meet your grandfather Gudger on Whittemore Branch, NC, when I was a teenager. He looked so much like my Grandfather Willima Alonzo Whittemore (or Lonnie, as they used to call him). I would love to share information. Please contact me at dellis9@tampabay.rr.com

Debbie
