John
Whittemore came from
England when he was a young man with a family name
Roberts. He married a lady with the last name of
Pinner. They settled in Ball
Holler, NC, the first holler after you turn off
Mars Hill Hwy heading toward Barnardsville NC.
Thier son "Johnny" Robert
Whittemore was born 10-17-1799. John Robert
Whittemore married Sarah
Hurst on 8-18-1822. They settled in Big
Ivy, and was the first family on
Whittemore Branch, near Barnardsville, NC. Thier children were Martin, George W, Margaret (Peggy), James
Braxton (Big Jim), Kate, Jane, and John Alex.
John Whitemore only used one T in his
Whittemore name. His son Martin was a Magistrate. He was the one who put the other T in
Whittemore. Martin served on the Confederate side of the Civil War. The song
Dixie always made him cry. He was in
Richmond when the war ended. He wore a yarn shawl and and a sissor tail coat, and was heavy set.
George W. Whittemore was slender and long legged. They said that he could cross his legs and wrap them around each other twice. He also served on the Confederate side of the Civil War. He drove a bull to to haul his wood. He plowed with oxen.
Margaret (Peggy) married Jack
Banks.
John Alex married a
Crow Indian named Matilda. He served in the Civil War and died in
Richmond Virginia of Typhoid Fever. When Matilda and the family went to retrieve his body, it could not be found.
James
Braxton Whittemore was my great grandfather. He married a little woman from
Indiana name Fanny. She wore size 3 shoes. He fought in the Civil War. He later died in a gun fight between his Son
Bud and Doc
Roberts. He had run up where they were arguing and he was killed in the shooting. Bud shot Doc
Roberts, but was later cleared.
Jane had a child out of wedlock name C. Columbus
Whittemore. He was called
Lum. His father was thought to be
Reuben Lisenbee from Marshall, NC. She never married him. Lum fought in the Civl war, but somehow ended up on the Union side.
Kate married
Erwin Ingle.
This information was passed down from the family. I have found information on John Robert Whittemore's children, but I don't know much about him or his father who came from
England. Can anyone help?
