was wondering if anyone could help me. my name is sarah lemons keel. my grandparents on my maternal side was frank edward maddle (1930-2004) and evie lois rittenberry (1931-1997).
the parents of frank edward were
dora mccloud (1905-1990) and beecher whittaker (the only information i have on mr. whittaker is that he was married when my great grandmother became pregnant. my grandfather knew that this was his father but papa took his last name from noah lee madewell who dora married and raised him. my mother said that mr whittaker passed away in the 1960's.

the parents of evie lois were
sarah smith (1895-1984) and john monroe rittenberry (1879-1936). monroe rittenberry died from injuries and illness related to a car accident and my aunt johnnie was the last baby born to them six months after monroe died.

from what i have found dora's parents were daniel mccloud (1870-1932) and dicie (maiden name unknown).

i dont have any info at all on beecher whittaker besides him passing away in the 1960's.

sarah smiths parents were
loyd smith and mary lucy crook (1884-1958) lucy crook later married dee madewell.
i dont have anything else on loyd smith.

i have the parents of mary lucy crook as shady crook and mary l whitehead.

i am not quite clear why people believe that mary lucy crook was married to win denson and had several children including my great grandmother sarah. i have not found anything confirming this fact at all.

if any of these names sound familiar or if you can help me fill in the gaps i would appreciate it.

thank you
jeanie lemons keel
Not much family at Thanksgiving....mom lives in Fla..so I will call her and ask about the name Elwell. I have never heard it...I just checked the Cleveland Necrology files and cannot find Aunt Sadie there, or Uncle Neil...a bunch of the others are there. At Thanksgiving it is only my son (35), my daughter in law and her mother and my granddaughter (19 mos.)...we are a tiny family...mom will come here for Christmas. Putting the pictures in the snail mail to you today when I leave work...will let you know what ma says about Elwell....Pat

I'm sorry, I have to have complete death dates as it isn't
enough for just the year -- lots of searching. Since you will be with family at Thanksgiving, ask if the last name Elwell means anything to them. In a census for Thomas and Sophia they listed a George Elwell b. 1844 and a David Elwell b. 1846, both born England. Also I have an Anna Whittaker born 1841 and can't find more. I am looking forward to my grandson who understands computers to pick up the pictures you sent. All good wishes, Pat
Hi Pat...I spoke to mom, and she said Aunt Sadie died in approx 1964-65...we were living in New Orleans then, that is how she settled on that time period. Uncle Neil died about a yr before we moved from Milan, Ohio to Bradenton, Fla...so that would have been approx 1953-54. You mentioned a Pearl...that is familiar to me, maybe from hearing Grandma (Effie) mention the name when I was a kid...I will ask ma about that too. Will get everything in the mail to you tomorrow. Have a good Thanksgiving Pat, I will be with my son, daughter in law, her mother and my granddaughter at their new home. Talk soon...Pat

What a pleasant surprise -- PICTURES!! I'm looking forward to that. I'm doing pretty well with organizing what I will send to you. Still having trouble with Neil and Sadie. In 1910 Census she lived with Florence. After that I can find a Neil and Sadie but her age changes all the time and I am not sure she is the one. If you have a death date for either or both I can possibly find them in Cleveland obituaries. I have one other puzzle. It has to do with a Pearl Whittaker who was divorced from Tom. Not sure which Tom. Any advice from your grandmother? HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

Mystery solved regarding Francis and Mary's daughter who was Mary. Conflicting information had me looking for a Marie, not Mary. She was listed as Marie in a census. I found she had died at age 10 and her parents were Francis and Mary Kelch Whittaker. Regarding George, he died age 21.
An aside, these folks lost children early in life. My grandparents Fox (Elizabeth Kelch Fox) lost their oldest son
at age 27 as he was a roofer and the scaffolding was improperly installed and he fell from a roof, then their son Justin died age 7 of lockjaw. My great grandparents Fox from Ireland lost two out of five children. Times were different. My father was the only one to carry on our name and I have only one nephew who had a son. That's it!
Thank you so much for the leads as I was needing a boost.
I'll copy and mail what I have for Francis. He was married twice. His first wife died age 34 and he then married Mary Kelch. His first two children were with Elizabeth Kane and then there are six children listed with Mary Kelch. I have doubts with the third child as one of them in their obituaries mentions Marie Helen and the other does not.

well let's see..Sadie & Neil met in Cleveland, he was working for a medical supply company I think...he then went to work at DuPont, and they moved to Wilmington, Delaware. Eventually back to Cleveland. Mom said to tell you that George Whittaker worked in a steel plant and it was really hot in there, and he left work one night in sub zero weather, he developed pneumonia and died. Mom had never heard the story about Tom and how he had died. Uncle Alf (Alfred) married one time and it did not last long...Robert married Elise Akers...I am definitely interested in any and all info you can supply me with..especially Joseph's brothers. My mailing address is Pat Dexter 1800 W. Armitage Ave Chicago, Illinois 60622..oh...mom said she cannot be sure that Neil Mullaly was born in Cleveland. This is so much fun !

HI, Can you give me an idea of where Neil and Sadie Mullaly lived. I am having trouble finding them. Haven't worked on Robert yet. Have some on Alfred. You will find Thomas interesting. He was a firemen, died at age 32 saving a boy who had fallen into a river. If you are interested in Joseph's brother Francis, that is my grandmother's family through her sister Mary Kelch Whittaker. If so, send snail mail address and I will copy them for you. Also have a couple of pictures of that line. I am Pat Wike, 14841 Timber Lane, Middleburg Hts., OH. 44130-5532 -- age 80.
All good wishes.

Hi, glad you were pleased to hear from me. I just started doing Joseph Whittaker's genealogy about a week ago. I have been doing genealogy for about 30 years and have exhaused myself on my lines, so was looking further into my grandmother's line -- bingo! You folks. I noticed that in 1881 there were Whittakers buried in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio. The three who purchased these lots were
Joseph, William and Francis. They purchased them when their father Thomas b 1814 England and d. 10-7-1881. My line is with Francis. I am distantly related as my grandmother Elizabeth Kelch Fox had a sister Mary Kelch who married Francis Whittaker. They were brothers. You are correct, Florence married John Rice, John's father was John Rice and his mother Sarah Reed. I'll get back with you as I am still digging around in graves and newspapers.

also thought I should mention that my Aunt Florence Whittaker married John Rice, not Reed...he was her only husband...they had a son who was a Dr...he was so handsome, and he died very young...My grandmother Effie died in '66..she and Grandpa (Roy) Carr are both buried in Milan, Ohio. I really would like to be in touch with members of the Whittaker family...mom is 85 now, and when I called to tell her about this , she was so happy.
Effie Whittaker (Carr) was my grandmother. I understand that Mary Jane was from an Amish/Quaker/Mennonite (we are not sure which) family, but that her father was in the Civil War, and in bad shape when he came home. I appreciate this help more than you know. My mom will come unglued ! LOL !! You may contact me by email..pdsd1948@yahoo.com. Please !
Best I can see is that Tirzah Whittaker came to Michigan from Canada after getting married to William Harrison Foster he was 39 and she was 20. They moved to Ionia County Michigan. Then got a divorce in 1869 because of curalty I'm sorry to say my great, great grandfather was not a nice man.She is in the Marble Cemetery in the Belding area. She died at 58. My great grandfather took care of her most of the time but I understand she moved from house to house living with her children. So I don't think we are any relation.

John Whittaker, Northumberland/Durham

I'm trying to research my GGGrandfather, John Whittaker. I know that he married Helen Oliver Beavis (b 1884, Northumberland) about 1901 in Newcastle, and that they had four children (Freddie, Crawford, Gladys & David). I've found both Helen and John on the 1901 census, they are living at the same address as Helen's family (mother Elizabeth, and siblings Caroline & David). However they are not married on this census; John Whittaker is described as being a boarder. His date of birth is listed as 1869, in Featherstone..however, I have been unable to find any other John Whittakers born in Featherstone in 1869 on any other census.
I have little other information about him except that he died sometime before WW2- he disappears early twentieth centuary, leaving his wife to bring up the children alone. Helen has to prove his death and travels (I believe) to a place called Lanchester in Durham..I think to obtain proof of death from his brother so that she can remarry.
Also since the 1911 census has been released I have found out that in 1911 Helen was back living in Newcastle with her mother and brother's family, and her children. However John Whittaker is not listed although she is listed as married. I can't find any record of the correct John Whittaker on this census either.
I'd be very grateful if anyone has any information about John Whittaker - thank you

Here is a fantastic Victorian Christmas photo that includes some of my relatives (My grandpa Stephen Charles Ware is the toddler at lower right, his cousin Stephen Harold Bishop next, and his aunt Juanita Stephen standing next above Harold,) as well as Richard and Lee Whittaker's children - most likely Debbie, Leroy and Maude. Maybe Agnes. They would have been at Ella and Kate Brady' house where my grandpa's family had rooms at the time, or the Whittakers' house. Definitely Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa.

Regarding the Robert Morris connection, you may want to see if anyone has a tree with him in it. They may have some links to the Whittakers.

Finding Jane's maiden name may be tricky--New York doesn't have a lot of records online. The best way would be to find her and William's marriage record, or the birth record for any of their children--those should contain her maiden name.

I'm not sure what you'll find on Ancestry. Have you ever used Family Search? It's a free site, and you have some better search options than on ancestry.

For instance, you can put in the last name Whittaker (don't check the box for exact spelling). Then pick Birth and enter NY (and check box). Then under parents, put William for the father and Jane for the mother (again, don't check the boxes). If people with those names had any children together, they should show up (although I'm not sure how many NY records they have).

https://www.familysearch.org/

I did a quick search and only came up with censuses--no birth or marriage records. You may want to try searching for marriage records for some of William and Jane's children--those may contain her maiden name.

One other thing to try for Jane. It seems the Whittaker family was in Ulster county for a long time, and most people didn't travel far back then. Chances are William H. met Jane right in that area.

You can try searching the 1850 census for a Jane born in NY c1832, living in Saugerties or even Kingston. (I actually tried it--Saugerties has two possibilities: Jane C Simmons and Jane Williams; Kingston had 6 hits, none with middle initials though, so all could be a possibility. After they married, some women used their maiden name as their middle name, so Jane Crispell of Kingston is worth a look).

Have you looked to see if anyone else has trees with your Whittakers in them? They may have some info you don't have (but be careful if the info is not documented--a lot of trees have errors!!).
Hi Donna,

I am here.

The recent search that you had found was similar to what I found last night (I couldn't wait for the mystery to continue). :-)

The Geo B Whittaker you found and his family was so similar to what I had found:
John B. Whittaker (1803 - 1876) and his wife was Nelly also (1809 - 1874).
Their children was the same as you had indicated. I am wondering if they had SO many kids in the family!

Also, when I entered John B. Whittaker, his parents popped up as well: Benjamin W. Whittaker (1773 - 1820) and Elizabeth Middaugh ((1774-1820).

I am hoping this is the correct family to my father's Whittaker side.

My father once we said we are related to Robert Morris as our great great great uncle (he was one of the Declaration of Independence signers). How do I find out if this is true?

Madeline
