Do you know John's (b. 1810) middle name? There are a bunch of John Whitneys. The ones I am familiar with are from Methuen Mass, Plainfield/Meriden New Hampshire and Vermont. In 1810 the border between New York and Canada was still somewhat undefined. The Vermont/New York border was pretty well established though. Do you know where John and Lanissa/Laura were married?
