I am attaching a post card sent to Oma. At first glance, I thought it was posted 1939, but further research proves that the stamp was published in 1954. Hot Springs, NM had changed its name to Truth or Consequence by then; but who knows when the card was published? I found it interesting that it was mailed to the address of the hotel. I have checked this message board and saw that a Whitley owned a motel here. It was sent by Wanda Knowles and has quite a bit of info. It would be nice to get these images with descendants.
Thanks, Karen

Re: Whitley: Southampton County VA

To: Mr. Hayde, re: Whitleys in Southampton County, VA: A recent autosomal DNA test that my dad took leads me to believe that your Whitley family may have originated in Smithfield, Johnston County, North Carolina.

It's a long, convoluted story, but the gist of it is this: My dad's great-great grandfather owned a store called "Whitley & Montague's" in Johnston County, North Carolina in the 1820s and 1830s. It turns out that his partner--Jesse Whitley of Johnston County, North Carolina--was his cousin. We've identified a number of autosomal DNA matches through the Whitley line, but there is one puzzling match-- a predicted 3rd to 6th cousin match on the same "Whitley" DNA segment-- whose family tree is from Southampton County, Virginia. Just googled "Whitley" and "Southampton" and found your post. Just a hunch until more proof is found, but I'll bet that your "Jessie T. Whitley" was descended from or closely related to our cousin Jesse Whitley of Johnston County, North Carolina.

Hi there,

Jane Ellen Whitley (born June 1st, 1840, and died September 22nd, 1925) was my third great-grandmother. She married John Wesley Tannahill (1832-1943) on August 27th, 1855, in Missouri. I'm looking for any possible information about her having Native American heritage. The rumor in my family is that she had Cherokee heritage, but I haven't found anything that confirms this. Any information is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Lauren

There is a book called Whitley Families of NC, written by Walter Charles Whitley, Revised Third Edition, published 1978 that may have the information you need. My cousin has the only copy I've seen. I don't know who published it or whether it's still available. Sorry..Hope this helps.

Check my family tree (ancestry.com), Whitley Efird to see if any names are connected. It's still a work in progress though. I'm adding info daily as I work on it. I actually wrote a paper on them when I was in college (1991) and copied lots of the Whitley/Wheatleigh/Wheatley information. I can send that to you if you want it.

Whitley Origins

The first record I found of the Whitley family name was around 1066 when they came across in support of the Norman Invasion and settled in a village called Whitleigh just north of Plymouth which is now a suburb of Plymouth. Some of the Family moved up to Shropshire and by the early 1300s to the Whitley Villages in Cheshire. Until this point the family had, in the main, remained farmers, but one member of the family moved to Aston Flintshire to marry into a family without a son & heir, this side of the family became very military minded. I have proof that the two families are linked, but, take care if you use a company to produce shields etc, these are unlikely to relate to your family.
The surname WHITLEY, I believe, comes from the Viking "White Meadow or Lay" which seems appropriate given that my family we farmers/Land Owners/Yeoman for many centuries.
Graham

I want to visit the ancestral home of the Whitley family in England. My great great grandfather was Haywood Sowell Whitley, born in 1827 in Nash, North Carolina. His son, my great grandfather, was George Washington Whitley, and his son, my grandfather, was John Bunyan Whitley. Does anyone know previous family or how I can find the lineage of the original Whitley clan?

As a hobby I rescue old photos that have identification on them. I look for family to send them to. I only ask to be reimbursed my expenses.

I have one of a middle aged man. His hair is graying and hairline receding. He has a full mustache. He is wearing a suit with a vest and you can see the chair of his watch. He is identified as Will Whitley. The photographer was in Elmira, NY. My guess is that it was taken prior to 1900.

If you are family & wish to obtain this, please contact me for details at: digginroots@yahoo.com

I am trying to find the parents of Hardy L Whitley
b. 18 Oct 1804 - Martin, NC
d. 21 Jun 1881 - Colorado Co., Texas

His wife (I believe) was Sarah Ann 'Sally' Canaway
b. 18 Aug 1809 - Martin, NC
d. 26 Aug 1876 - Colorado Co., Texas

My assumption is that Hardy's parents may have still be using the Wheatley surname.

Guess is his father was Samuel A Whitley b. 1780 in Martin, NC.

Do you have information you could send me on this Whitley line? I hope you can share it with me... I am doing family history research for Stephen Whitley who I believe married Ida Lizza Moore Whitley, although I have the name Ada(or Ida?)Mae, not an official record- it was written in a family bible. Any information you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Re: Origin of Whitley Name

Hi,
I have been trying to trace my grandmothers line and have hit a wall. I have my gggrandmother as a Rebecca whitley. Census lists have her birth as possibly Mar 1854 in England. No husbands name listed so possibly deceased prior to immigration or shortly thereafter. Year of immigration to USA 1879. She remarried to an unknown man named ? Senior. She had 2 children Sarah Whitley and Annie Senior. I have a postcard from a relation of Rebecca named Ethel Hemmingway with an address of 106 Birchyard, Townend, Dewsbury, England. If any of these names are familiar, please contact me!
Thanks,
Debra
Re: James Wyatt Whitley

Hi, Mary Ruth

I do have Lila and Lola, born 1882 in Keatchie in my line. So we are definitely related. My grandfather was Eugene Allen Whitley born in Keatchie, too. He and Fannie had three sets of twins. The last ones were born in 1899 and died along with Mary Frances (Winderweedle) Whitley. Other twins, Mattie and Minnie were born in 1882. I know there were other children but haven't looked them up recently. I am really interested in determining the parents of James Wyatt Whitley. My aunt, Maudie Mae Whitley Montgomery said James Wyatt was her grandfather and he came from Georgia. She thought born in Macon Georgia and was orphaned at an early age..... That is as far back as I have found. Do you have anything further.

My email is mimij1937@comcast.net

Would love to hear back from you. By the way, I live in houston, Texas.
