The Whiting family of the Centreville area was quite prominent in shipping and farming at around the time of the Civil War. The family head was Samuel Whiting, who was 48 in 1860. However, the war brought great social and economic changes, and by 1900 the Whitings had moved on, to cities such as Baltimore and Philadelphia.
