Linnie/Lennie was not a Whitecotton nor the child of Mary Jane Lipe Whitecotton. She was the step-daughter of my great grandfather John Henry Whitecotton by his 2nd wife Josie Sims. She was 2 when John married Josie. It is believed that Lennie (as we spell her name) was the child of Josie's uncle who was a Hixson. She was born out of wedlock and may not have known her lineage because she used the name Whitecotton from the age of 2 but my grandfather Ottis "Ottie" was her older step-brother and he gave me the information. He was 13/14 when his dad married Josie after his mother Mary Jane "Mollie" died. He also said she was a Native American Indian. Lennie has no full blooded siblings. Step siblings are Lee Etta, Johnny & Ottie.
Half siblings are Allie and Murray.
Thank yuo! George Harrison Whitecotton was my Uncle, and, as you know a pilot in the U S Army Air Corps, rose to the rank of Lt Col but opted out of the military after his 5 year old daughter developed cancer. He and his wife, Evelyn, returned to their home in Kentucky to spend the final days with their daughter, Georglyn. He became a coach and teacher in Marion, KY. Evelyn became the post mistress in their hometown of Carrsville, Ky. They never recovered from the loss of Georglyn.
Christopher, do you have all the info from the 1870, 1880 and 1900 censuses? In the 1900 Jackson County, AL census, Phoebe is alone with Dink and Eda...but right next door is her married daughter, Wygice. I could not figure out Wygice's married surname. The marriage license recording I have says Phebe C. Posey was married on 7/23/1865 to Hiram Whitecotton, by Simeon Houk, MG, in Jackson County. I do have a note that a person from OK is a descendant of Hiram, and you might want to pursue this. If you would like to correspond via email, I could give you that name. My ancestor, Wayne W. Cotton (Whitecotton), Scott County, TN, breaks off from yours at James Whitecotton and Ruth Newton Hudspeth. Another note of interest, my Auntie was Posey in Jefferson County, AL.
Peggy
pegharmon@cableone.net

No, i havent had any answers. Phoebe is my ggg grandmother. My grandmother says that her grandmother Eda Jane never talked about "her people" or whether there were any living or not. I did see a census showing the shoemaker in the same household, and wondered the same thing. I have also tried to figure out if Martha Posey in the same census was her sister or sister in law? If I could find her husband or parents maybe I could trace Phoebe's parents. I havent been able to pinpoint either. The family says that Phoebe was a Creek Indian but I cannot corroborate that for sure either..Any more information you find would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Christopher, did anyone ever answer you? I too have tried to solve this mystery. Phoebe apparently had two children after his death (the other was Dink, b 8/1882 in AL). I have wondered if they were fathered by the shoemaker living in the same household in the 1870 census.

Jennie Whitecotton in West Virginia (or Kansas)

I am looking for any information that anyone might have regarding my great-great- grandmother Jennie Whitecotton. He family was generally from the northern panhandle of West Virginia however she appears to have been born in Reno, Kansas potentially on an indian reservation about January 1879. Her father was Noah and mother was Margaret Lamb. It appears that other than when she was born in Kansas, the family was generally in and around the Wheeling area. In particular, she died when my great grand mother, Edith, was a young teenager. I do not have the death information but could of been around 1916. Jennie (Virginia) was married to Lafayette Williams June 15th, 1902. Besides my great grandmother Edith, Jennie had children named Virgil, Kenneth, Ira, Willard, Lee, Leo, Eldora, Eleanor (Williams). I would like to know what caused her death and where she might be buried as well as how she was the only sibling born out west in Kansas.

Any info regarding Jennie (Virginia) would be great. Thanks

Ken Dillinger

Seems we are going years in between responding. LOL I am just now getting back into researching. If you see this would be interested in any info you have. It seems that There was alot of disagreement among the Whitecotton brothers and sisters on what indian tribe they came from. I haven't found any indian lineage that can be proven so far. Would love to share any info. I don't have a lot that I have been able to prove yet. I am reorganizing and hoping to go to a research center soon. I will gladly share what I do know. I have pictures of them if anyone is interested. I've found newspaper clippings in some of her books which I believe to be from the Jefferson Bee in Iowa. She died in 1964.
Hi Steven,

The book "The Whitecotton Family" (a three ring binder)was published in 1998 by Lawrence and Sue Dale. On the acknowledgements page a number of researchers are mentioned. Would you like to have a copy of this page? There is close to 600 pages of family data. I'm sure some of the research is in error, albeit which genealogical research isn't. I would be happy to look up info for you.

Robyn Shegda

I am a Whitecotton, William H. Whitecotton was my father, grandfather, Milo Whitecotton; ggfather, Millard F Whitecotton; gggfather, Isaac M Whitecotton married to Sarah E. Smith. I have been told that we have a Cherokee Indian in the family, however I can't determine who it is. I have heard it probably was a woman. If you have any records on this I would appreciate any info you can give me.

Does anyone have info on the published book "The Whitecotton Family" by Lawrence and Sue Dale"? I understand the authors have none of the copies left.

Thanks
Jeanne & Tammy
Is it possible to get photocopies of the family history in the bible?

I will pay for any expenses to do so. Thank you for your response. Personal question, are you Justine?
Whitecottons in Tennessee

I have been searching for more information about Celina Whitecotton, b 1839, Campbell County, Tn. She is the mother of my g-grandfather French Brown/Wilhite, b. 1866 (probably in Scott County, Tn). Celina married first John Brown 7/13/1854. He was killed in 1862, selling horses to Union troops in Ky.
Celina had an affair with a Col. Wolford, with whom she had a son, in 1863. He is named as one of the persons who possibly killed her husband. In 1866, my g-grandfather was born. In 1869, Celina then married John C. Wilhite, using her married name of Celina Brown. Apparently my g-grandfather was born out of wedlock, but I don't know to whom. Any answers?
Margaret Coffey Ervin
