Hi

Many thanks for the email.

I am a member of the Guild of One Name Studies researching the name of WHITCHER and its variants and I have, at present, over 60 family trees.

I have this tree with over 300 people (W*cher names only and their spouses). I also have John born about 1680, however the only other baptism to yours is one in Whiteparish in 1683. Therefore, I have not been able to corroborate his birth, as yet. In this tree, I have traced family members who have emigrated to the USA and Canada. I would be pleased to share any additional information I have that you would require. You can contact me direct on whitcher@one-name.org.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Richard

Hi Richard,
My husband is Gavin Whitcher. We live in North Lincolnshire but his g father, William Henry Whitcher b1910 was from Bermondsey. It seems the Whitchers were in London for several generations (g grandfather William Frederick b1881, gg grandfather William James b1851, ggg grandfather John Whitcher b1851), but by the time we get back to his gggg grandfather, John Whitcher b1780 the link back to Hampshire is made. He was born in Knights Enham, Andover.
His ggggg grandfather, Thomas Whitcher b1756 was also born in Knights Enham, as was his gggggg grandfather, Stephen Whitcher b1724. His ggggggg grandfather, John b c.1686 was listed as having been born in Andover while his earliest traced ancestor, his gggggggg grandfather, John b1659 was born in Upavon, a few miles outside Andover.

We would love to be able to get back further and also to see if there are any links from our Whitchers to others living elsewhere in the world.
Guy Allaird/Allard Whitcher died in the hospital in Miles City, MT not in Madison as noted in familysearch.org//Montana Death Index//and is buried in Broadus, PowderRiver, MT with his wife Lillie. Death Certificate confirms he is the son of Joshua Whitcher and Sedate Hoyt. These are my grandchildren great grandparents.
Arlene

WHITCHER / WHITTIER New Brunswick

I am looking for information on Merrill WHITCHER/ WHITTIER (b. abt. 1804). In the 1861 census of St. Patrick, N.B. Merrill Whittier's family was going by the name Whitcher. The Whittier family that included Henry, Reuben and Merrill settled the area in the early 1800's. There was a Merrill Sr. and Jr. I have seen information that perhaps this family originated in Maine, anyone have information on this family?

Hi Jack,

I have returned and reread your message. It's my understanding, from a Kansas biographical and obit I have on MJ Burke, that his wife, Catharine nee MARTIN was born in County Antrim, Ireland between 1825-1826. She died in 1904 and is buried at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Johnson county, Kansas. I only have record of a brother, Frank (Francis) MARTIN, born 1824 and died 1906, buried at same cemetery. Other than a marriage record and some census records, I have virtually nothing on my MARTIN line.

And I am not aware of my MARTIN line being in Canada. I have an Iowa marriage CD and I've been going through MARTIN marriages and posting queries at various surname message boards, looking for leads.

I do appreciate you posting such extensive information for me to review. That's very thoughtful of you. Thank you.

Carol

Jack,

Wow! thanks for all the information. I'll need to get back to you on this later today as I'm getting ready to run out the door in about an hour.

But very quickly, I find it ironic that Mr. Whitcher was a Civil Engineer and Land surveyor. The reason being---my greaat grandfather, Michael John Burke who married Catharine Martin in 1851, Dubuque, IA, was a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin with a degree in law. He was also a Civil Engineer, land surveyor, and school teacher in Iowa, Minnesotta, & Kansas. And their daughter, my grandmother, Veronica NALL (nee Burke) lived and died in Alameda county, Oakland, California.

We'll talk more as I'm curious what brought this Whitcher family out to California.

Carol

George S. WHITCHER Biography, NH<MI<OH<WI<CA<WI

From "History of Grant County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 961.

TOWN OF LIMA

GEORGE S. WHITCHER, farmer and dairyman, of Lima; P. O. Platteville; was born in Bath, Grafton Co., N. H., May 4, 1830; four years later, his parents removed to Michigan, then went to Ohio, then to Wisconsin in 1845. They located on a timbered farm in Ellenboro. Grown to manhood here, G. S. Whitcher, in 1850, went to California, and was there about six years. During this time, his parents had settled where he now lives in Lima. In 1859, he married Rhoda Cooley, a native of Johnson, Trumbull Co., Ohio. His father died in 1871 on the farm, and the widowed mother in 1875, in Platteville. Mr. and Mrs. Whitcher have five children - John F., Fannie L., Lee, Nora A. and George S., all born in what is now the cheese-factory, then the home of their parents. Mr. Whitcher has a fine farm of 393 acres, originally timbered land, that is fast proving itself equal to the best grass-producing lands of Central New York. He has a herd of twenty or more milch cows, with much other stock, and very large and well arranged barns. In the spring of 1880, he fitted up a cheese-factory, the only one in his town. It has proven a successful venture, and it is his intention to use the milk of 300 cows during the season of 1881; 125 cows furnished the milk for the 23,000 pounds of cheese made here in 1880. Mr. Whitcher has added a new boiler, pump, etc., and evidently means to do a good business.

[I am not related to this family. I'm posting this as a service and hope it helps!]

Hello Jenny,
I've just seen your post which states that your WHITCHERs originated in Andover, Hampshire.
Do you by any chance have an Elizabeth WHITCHER who married Francis HEAD in Andover on 26 July 1747 (from BIVRI)? I think she is my ancestor, but I haven't got far in identifying her or her family. An IGI record suggests that she might be the one baptised 19 Sep 1726 to John and Elizabeth. And, if that is so, the John and Elizabeth in question might be John WHITCHER and Elizabeth BAVERSTOCK who married 9 Feb 1718. But these are all "might be"s.
Are you following the same line? And, if so, have you come to the same conclusions?

Jeannette

I have most of the family down from Merrill, but prior to that is hard to find. The information that I have is that Merrill, his brother and two sisters were born in Maine and then the family moved to New Brunswick. Perhaps we could share information.

Esther St. Clair WHITCHER

My Esther Whitcher was born abt. 1817, so we aren't talking about the same person, but it is interesting that the names are so close.

My Esther married John Bates in Carroll Co. IN on November 13, 1835 and then married Daniel White (in IN) on December 29, 1840.

I'm really not sure whether St. Clair is a maiden name and there is another marriage to a Whitcher (Witcher)? It seems unlikely as she was 18 when she married John Bates.

These people are all a mystery. I can find very little information on any of these people.
