Yes you are spot on it was not the same when Ritson took over that is why I left I was not going to travel to Kirby glad you made a life for yourself in music as I remember your heart was not in the firm so you did the best thing A lot of the work was good van den burghs to levers SPD depots pork shoulders from Smithfield to the Spam factory in Liverpool the pork shoulders would cut your hands and the cuts would go bad if not careful one of the plus side of Ritson was the depot in Stepney had a house at the back with beds in and a kitchen so we lived there all week and whent to the pub next door and whent up to mile end road to a Greek cafe and the lady there Mamma she was called cooked us steak dinners ankle the national winner would not have jumped them and then a tour of the local pubs listening to Irish music or the local cockney,s singing the old songs tame by today's standards but good fun wharton&son was the type of firm you never left a lot of guys worked for Peter for 32/40 years and yes the motors were good I was the second one to drive a article for Wharton a 2stroke commer you could hear it coming a mile off I loved it till some idiot had it while I was on holiday first he phoned me up and asked e why it would only do 40 mph I said try 5th gear then Mac the transport manager phoned me and said he had blown the engine he had picked reverse instead of 5th gear I got it back but it was never the same I think that motor was my favourite in my 50years of trucking once you heard that 2stroke you never forgot it Foden made one as well I drove one of them to unforgettable my wife of the time could hear me coming from 2miles away and had chance to throw the boyfriend out

interesting letter about my fathers firm which he sold to Ritson.I was not interested in carrying on humping sides of beef at woodside lairage for 10 years made me very strong but when it closed we started carring frozen beef and biscuits for Crawfords who were in Binns Road Liverpool. We had super reliable wagons Albions made in Glasgow but I think everything changed when Ritson took over.I know my father lasted a couple of years but was not happy with the way the firm was being run.I went into pop group management and promotion involving me with The Beatlesand many other top liverpool bands

Thank you.. Many years have passed. I dont have any Wharton information other than her name. I had researched her married line of the Barclays. I just recently found out that Robert Barclay's father was James Barclay. Could they make this any harder? Smiles.

Re: Wharton Family in UK - possibly Liverpool area

I too have been trying to find some lineage about my husbands grandfather, JAMES JOHN WHARTON, who came from England, Liverpool, in 1905 on the SS Siberian and arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he lived with a Mr and Mrs Samuel Hoyt of Bright, New Brunswick. He later married a ELLA RUBY ALLEN of Lower Hainesville, New Brunswick. I have both the marriage cert. which tells his parents and HENRY AND POLLY WHARTON and a passenger list, that shows his age as of 1905 and that he was with the Middlemore Emmigration Home. The following information was gained through the Nation Archives in Ottawa, Ontario.
dated June 10/1903
Child- James Wharton
age 8 years as of 1902 (which would have made him born 1894)
parent- Henry Wharton
address- 55 High Street, Kates Hill. Dudley(his last known address)
siblings- 7 brothers and 3 sisters (this I can't verify because I can't find any background information on him)
notes-three charge of theft against the boy.(what children seem to steal was food or candy)
Parents drunkards,(this comment on the parents in arguable, but would have made it easy for the Home to seize the child)(fines against the father would be very difficult. It would leave the father with no choice but to turn over his son to the Home. It was that or he would have to be charged with a period of time that would include hard labor. This would take him out of the family and they would have no means of support, and thus cause more hardship on the rest of the family.)
father a horse driver earns 16/ week,
with 8 children (I cannot verify the number of children)(fines against the father would be very difficult. It would leave the father with no choice but to turn over his son to the Home. It was that or he would have to be charged with a period of time that would include hard labor. This would take him out of the family and they would have no means of support, and thus cause more hardship on the rest of the family.
The mother turned the child over to the home, it said Child to come in 26/06/
If anyone recongnizes any of this please contact me at sandlgreen@xplornet.ca
I am a new participant in ancestry.com and have only just begun to validate the initial family tree that I have put together. I am validating the Grant line, and I am already finding conflicting information. Yes, I would like to try to help resolve conflicting information that you have found.

I don't know about this curse, but I am starting to think that it is possible. My husbands mother was EDNA MABLE WHARTON, daughter of JAMES JOHN WHARTON from England. He was what I have so far a Middlemore boy. Born about 1894, he was the son of HENRY AND POLLY WHARTON, and in 1903 was placed in the Home and in 1905 was sent to Canada, departing Liverpool and arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he was picked up by a SAMUEL HOYT of Bright, New Brunswick and later married RUBY ELLA ALLEN of Lower Hainesville, New Brunswick. I am hoping I can find where the family continues in England. If related, let me know.
Sharon

Hi Nancy,

I have a rather large amount of information concerning your family. I would truly like to clear up a bit of confusion that stems from the naming tradition and the confusion of various historical claims concerning specific persons aligned with incorrect names/dates.

Thanks greatly,

Chantal Pikun

Hello
My name is Tom Smiles I currently live in Sunderland
Tyne & Wear, England.I have just came across you message

My grand mother was called Carnation Wharton born
1878 her parents were Stephen & Margaret Wharton
was your grandfather Mashach born in 1873 because
I am not sure if my grand mother Carnation
was your Great grand father's sister I have only
recently discovered some of the Wharton family moved
from a gypsy camp in Reddleton Yorkshire to America
in the mid 1800's.Was your grandfather born in 1873
and his parents called Margaret & Stephen ? I know
Stephen's father was called Gilderoy Wharton and
his mother I believe was called Mary (nee Chrismas)
(although I have been informed Gilderoy married twice)
both Stephen 9 children & Gilderoy had 10 children
. Recently I came across a article printed in
The New York Times in 1881 titled "A Romantic Gypsy
Marriage (sequel to death of a gypsy king )Uriah
Wharton is mentioned ( at the moment I am unsure of
how many children Uriah had as I have just begun trying
to collect info for my family tree)
My father married late in his 50's so I was not born
until the 1960's sadly he passed away in 1986 non of
his brothers or sisters are among us anymore so I am
a little stuck on some information.

It would be nice to here from you although I think it
was sad your grandfather was sent to a childrens home

WHARTON Letha Hamer 1921-2013 Ohio

MOUNT VERNON: Letha K. Wharton, 91, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away Tuesday January 22, 2013, surrounded by her loving family at Knox community hospital.
She was born on July 30, 1921 in Orrville, Ohio, (Wayne County) to the late Everett and Bernice (Hauger) Hamer.

Letha was a proud member of the "Greatest Generation" having been a child of the depression years and a young adult during the Second World War. She married her high school sweetheart who was a young glider pilot during the war and flew several important missions including the invasion of Normandy on D Day 1944.

Letha and Floyd were married on Jan. 21st, 1943.

Floyd passed away in 2000; they enjoyed 57 years of marriage.
During the war years Letha worked for Cooper-Bessemer as a draftsman, she loved this job and still talked about those years and the people she met and worked with.

During the 1970's Letha owned and operated a ceramics business selling her original creations in both Knox and Richland County.

Letha enjoyed long country drives, going out to lunch, shopping, all animals and knitting. During the depression years readymade sweaters were expensive so her mother paid for knitting lessons. It was a gift that Letha used all of her life making all sorts of lovely items for herself, Christmas and birthday gifts for family and friends even including Christmas of 2012 when she was ill.

She considered herself an artist and at the age of 80 began taking water color lessons that resulted in many beautiful paintings that will serve family members as a reminder of her talent and relentless determination to not waste her life. Above all Letha loved her family and was at her happiest when spending time with them.

Letha is survived by a son and daughter in law, David (Waunita) Wharton of Mansfield, Ohio; two grandchildren, Kevin (Brandy) Wharton of Ontario, Ohio, and Brian (Mary) Wharton of Delaware, Ohio; four great grandchildren, Sierra, Brian, Brooklynn, and Sara; and her beloved cats, Casey and Sweetie Pie.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Wharton; two brothers, Glenn and Dale Hamer; and a sister, Helen Holloway.

The family will observe a private service for family and close friends at Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Ohio

In honor of Letha, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Knox or Richland County, Ohio.

The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of Letha K. Wharton.

That's how I got the name Calopiss, but there is no other record of him...unless he went by his middle name or a nickname! Jane came over with Samuel Lee and later in life lived with his daughter, who went by several names. It seems she may have had a long time relationship with him interrupted by Calopiss, although they were together and apart quite a bit. Makes me kinda wonder if she was mad at Samuel at the time of Theodore's birth!!

I am trying to find a William Whorton, married to a Martha (possibly Campbell) who had the children listed in earlier post, as well as info on their parents. They were my GG-Grandparents (WhortonLossmann-2 Tree) and I can not find anything on them except 1850 & 1860 census.

I have went to the extreme of using Find A Grave, adding them to a tree, then using the census, etc. I have been workig on this for months, spending 8 to 16 hours a day on Ancestry and still nothing.

My gr-grandfather, John Alexander Wharton, was in Butte County,CA from about 1860 and died in 1886. He was born in VA, I believe I have him in Ohio with his sister and then to California. He was about 60 years old when he married my gr-grandmother and there was a difference of 30+ years in their age. He could well have had another family before coming to California, but I haven't been able to find one.

Wharton family photos 1800 - 1940

I am the grandchild of C.E. and Minnie Belle Geno Wharton. I was wondering if anyone had the old photos that hung in the last house, out from Bloomburg? I am making a book about experiences there (my sisters and I loved going there). I remember seeing a photo of Mama holding my mother, Faye. She was sitting in a chair and Granddaddy was standing behind her. She looked very young and beautiful. My daughter's baby photos look a great deal like my mother in that photo. If anyone knows where I could look or who I could contact I would be extremely grateful! Thanks, Virginia

Wharton, Boswell, West, Lewis - Washington State

My husband's Grandmother is Evelyn West who claims to be part Gypsy. She was born to Mildred West, and no known father, Mildred was single at the time. Mildred West I believe her parents were Amos West and Christine Wharton. Christine later then married Charles Howe.. Or it could have been that Mildred married this Charles Howe.. Story is very vague, and unclear. In the family I have the names of Delinda or Delindeer Boswell and a Myrtle either West or Boswell. I also know that Evelyn West then married first George Earl Lewis, then Norman Blackorby, then Charles Berg. Evelyn was born February 19, 1923. Evelyn stated she also had a 1/2 brother name Chester Aukump or something still alive in Yakima, Washington.. who may have married a Mary Mason or something.

I show Christine Wharton's Mother as Doreen Wharton.

Christine, was a fortune teller in Washington. They called her Madame Wharton. She passed this on through generations, Evelyn West (Lewis,Berg) also told fortunes in Seattle, WA..

I met her once before she died.. Interesting woman, but didn't want to talk about her family.

Contact me at: a b l a z e w e b @ c o m c a s t . n e t.

Whartons of Cumberland County, Illinois

Looking for information on the family of Jonathon and Mary Coville WHARTON. Jonathon Wharton was born in Fayette County, PA in 1806. He married his wife, Mary COVILLE, in Belmont County, Ohio in 1929. Jonathon and Mary had the following children: Elizabeth b. 1830; George b. 1831; Sarah b. 1835; Louise b. 1837; William b. 1840; Rachel b. 1842; Jane b. 1844; Mary b. 1846; Ann M. b. 1848; Laura E. b. 1850; and Clara Ellen b. 1855. They may have been more children. I know that Jonathon and Mary were living in Muskingum County, Ohio until at least 1855. However, they're gone by the 1860 census. I managed to find Rachel, William, and George in the 1860 census but nobody else. George ended up dying in the Civil War in 1862. William and Jane are listed in the 1870 census for Greenup Twp., Cumberland County, Illinois. William died in Illinois in 1916. Clara Ellen Wharton WILCOX died in Illinois in 1917. I believe Laura E. died in Illinois as well. Elizabeth stayed in Ohio and married Martin Messick. Curious to know what happened to the rest of the family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm DESPERATELY searching for Theodore Wharton, my husband's GGGrandfather. He was married to Carolyn Boswell and they were travellers. His Mother was likely "Jane" who came across in 1857 with Samuel Lee and Samuel's kids Noah, David & Phoebe (who later used Shiva & Theresa). Later Jane called herself a "Wharton" and had Theodore abt1860-Maryland or Mass) and possibly Theresa (abt 1853 New Jersey). On the last census I can find Jane is living with Phoebe & her husband (a Wharton) and is calling herself Lee again. On Theodore's death index his father is listed as "Calopiss" but there is no record of that name at ALL! Theodore m Caroline Boswell had 4 children, David, Elijah, Anna (who was known as Spizey) and Emma. David's son said that he had another brother who visited him in AL in the 1940's-50's..."Meshack" but I can't find him either! I'm SOOOO frustrated!!

This Mrs Wharton was likely Mary Theresa Rogers from County Down, Ireland. She emigrated in 1912. Appears that she was married to Wharton and in NYC when her brother, Patrick, emigrated in 1913. Did she marry Wharton before coming to US? Or later? Need to know some of the answers. Anybody know the connection? ralphdelange@hotmail.com

Thank you for pointing out this very important record for the son of Peter and Sarah Wharton. In researching this family, we have found other documents that show that Tabitha and Hester, also listed in the 1850 census with Peter, are daughters of Sarah. Other records show the relationship of Sarah and children to the Cropper family of Accomack while Peter is associated with the John and Elizabeth Williams Wharton family. Oral family history indicates that at least Tabitha is also the daughter of Peter Wharton. I would be very interested in corresponding and sharing documents with descendants of Henry Wharton and any other descendants of Peter and Sarah.

Peter Wharton, Tabitha Wharton, Accomack Co., VA

To those who have Peter Wharton and Tabitha Wharton attached to their family tree as husband and wife, please see the Accomack Co., VA Marriage Register at www.ghotes.net/mk4/100.jpg in regards to a James Henry Wharton, widower. His parents are listed as Peter and Sarah Wharton. He may be the same Henry Wharton listed in the Peter Wharton household on the 1850 census, St. George Parish.

Also, there is a marriage record of a Henry Wharton who married Rachel Stevens, 30 Jan 1851. His mother is listed as Sarah Wharton. His father is not listed. See "Marriage Records of Accomack County, Virginia 1776-1854", by Nora Miller Turman.

Thos WHARTON b1856, Woodchurch; s/o John & Ellen nee MADDOCKS

Between 1886 and 1892 my gr-grandmother's sister Ann ANDERSON had at least three children in Birkenhead, CHS to Thomas WHARTON, son of John WHARTON and Ellen nee MADDOCKS, christened 17 Feb 1856 at Woodchurch, CHS.

At the 1881 census he was an iron ship builder living at home with his parents; his father had the same occupation. By 1891 Thomas has become an engine fitter and is a 'Visitor' in the house of Ann, a dairy keeper and her 3 daughters and 2 lodgers. Ann had married John BROWN a mariner on 26 Aug 1867 at St Nicholas Church, Liverpool.

Ten years further on, in 1901, Ann and her 2 youngest daughters have become Whartons and they're joined by a 9 year old son. Thomas is a shipbuilder and is now Head of the Household. Ann's 21 year old nephew lodges with them, as does a 25 year old married male 'Visitor'.

So far I've been unable to find a marriage for Ann and Thomas, or the death of John BROWN.

I'd very much appreciate some help with these people. I've been tracing my CHS genealogy for well over 20 years and have a lot of family details that I'm happy to exchange with other researchers.

Norma … motherbear@xtra.co.nz
Wharton (or Whorton) father of Lillie Ruth Wharton (married name Lucas ) of Alton, Jefferson Co Alabama

I am trying to locate the paternal father of Lillie Ruth Wharton (1930 census) who was the granddaughter of Carrie Pond Turner and Jim R. Turner living with them in 1930. Lillie Ruth was born of a single mother at the time, Glennie Turner. Glennie's illegitimate daughter Lillie Ruth was raised by her grandparents as noted above. Glennie later married Ernest Bramel but Lille Ruth never lived with them. Lillie Ruth later married a Lucas.

Susan,
after some research, I have found one Philly Wharton Quaker who was exiled to Winchester, VA because of his loyalist feelings. There were other Quakers from the same meeting house exiled with him. see: http://www.jstor.org/pss/4248514

You may have to copy and paste that.
Dave
