I am researching a Kathryn, Katie Doyle married a James Whalen [b. Wisconcin]. Married abt. 1886, not sure if married in Wisconsin. They appear in the Idaho 1900 census for Canyon Co., Idaho.
There was also a John, Thomas and Daniel Doyle, living in Cedarburg, Wisconsin in late 1800's. Katie was likely a child of one of these 3 Doyle Wisconsin family.

This Doyle family could have originated in Co. Carlow, near Co. Kilkenny.

Does any of this sound familiar? Would be happy to exchange what information I have.

kathleen446@hotmail.com

Hi John,
Thank you so much for your response. Sounds like the right family as they are the only Whalens there I believe. Alexander (Ruby's Father) was Georges brother (who's grandchildren I am in contact with) and their father was John whalen born 1866. Could you tell me which branch you are from please. Its lovely to have contact with my Whalen family. I have pretty much exhausted all records for Whalen but am still trying to find Brenda Alexandra who married Alastair Parker. She is my Moms cousin and would love any information.
Thank you again
Lisa x

Walter Whalen/Whaling 1760-1835, Ithaca, Tompkins, NY

I am looking for the children of Walter Whalen/Whaling, a Rev. War veteran, pension #W 19611. Walter was born about 1760 and died in Ithaca, Tompkins County, NY on 25 May 1835. He was married to Catherine _____ on 10 May 1782.
Catherine was born about 1760-1763, Scotland and died in Ithaca, NY on 3 Nov 1862. She states in her widow's pension that she and Walter had children, but gives no names. She is found in the 1860 census living with a possible son, V. Whalen, 37, Day Laborer, b. NY [about 1823].
I am wondering if there is a connection between Ramer S. Veldran and the Whalen's. Perhaps Ramer's wife Mary is a daughter????

We have results for our newest member in the Whalen and variants yDNA Project,

Kit# 159345, whos family line is;
Patrick Whalin, b 1738 Ireland, marr, Susannah Leach
Valentine Whalin, b abt 1780 Montgomery VA, marr Barbara Penner
William Patrick Whalin, b 1804 Montgomery VA, marr Lucinda P Goodman
William Goodman Whalin, b 1839 Warren KY, marr Lucrecia Frances Doolin
Thomas J Whalin, b 1865 Edmonson KY, marr Otilla Adeline Ray

He matches 32/37 with another Whalen member, Kit 114211, who traces back to Trenton NJ.

They both share some distinctive marker values,
390 = 21
YCA II a = 22
YCA II b = 23

This puts them into a new group for the Whalens. "R1b group 03". Though the match is not very close, 50% probability of having a common ancestor within the 450 years and 95% probability of within 850 years, the distinctive values do show a new line of Whalen/Whalins emeging.

You can see the results and submitted lineages at;
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/whalen

regards
Frances
Gary and Mark

Joseph Whalen and Genevieve Doherty are my husband's great grandparents. Genevieve is the daughter of Patrick Doherty and Margaret (I have Deming/Demming) - Mark, you show Donigan. Patrick is the son of Patrick Doherty and Margaret ??. Mark, maybe either Deming of Donigan is her last name and we have them confused or maybe not. Patrick senior came about 1850 and per the census was living in Emmet, Dodge county, Wis. Couldn't find them on the 1860 census, so persumed dead. From the census they had 6 children all born in Ireland. Patrick Jr. and Margaret married in Wisconsin and had their first child, Bernard there. By 1860 they were in Iowa. I have a picture of Patrick Jr. and Margaret's tombstone, as well as Joseph Whatlen and Genevieve's. Let me know if you would like a copy as well as any answers regarding the family.

Sharon Kisor

Re: Whalen from Queens, NY

Hi

You might want to send another query with additional information. Include the Given Names of the Parents, children (known) and also give Dates of Birth, Marriage (spouse name if known) and DOD. If they lived in various area's you might want to include any other information known.

Whalen is a common Surname in Ireland and also NYC & NYS. My Whalen family came during the Potato famine and you might want to include the Date of arrival, Date of Naturalization (if known). I was also able to obtain through family records the County from where they came and the Given Name of the father and Mother (also her maiden name) through family documents.

Unless you have the County, Church Parish and Townland your family came from in Ireland it is very difficult to trace your family.

Also look for spelling variation such as Whelen, Whaling and etc. when searching for Records and documents.

Pat R

Hi again.

I just took a quick look and there were ~530 WHALEN people in MA in 1920, with ~160 of them in Suffolk County and ~100 of them in Middlesex County.

And there were 38 John WHALEN's in MA in 1920, with 18 in Suffolk Co. and 13 in Middlesex Co.

And there were ~200 people in MA in 1920 with the WHELAN spelling. Again most in Suffolk Co. and Middlesex Co. And 22 John WHELAN's.

I cannot check the 1930 census. Other people can.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Hi Bob,

I can just offer an FYI. My husband's great-grandparents were a GAVIN / WHALEN couple who arrived in MA/US in 1883 and settled in Waltham, MA, and had many children there. Mrs. Margaret (WHALEN) GAVIN probably traveled alone from Co. Galway, Ireland, as a young woman, and I have not been able to find out if she had relatives in New England.

Have you asked on Lists or Boards for a look-up in the 1920 MA census? That might show WHALEN families / couples in MA that year.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(Don't forget the alternate spelling, WHELAN.)

Hi Jack. I can only offer an FYI. My husband's gr-gr-grandparents were Patrick WHELAN / WHALEN and Bridgit KEARNS from Co. Galway. I don't know anything else about them. I only know they had a daughter, Margaret WHELAN, b~1860 in County Galway.

In 1883 Margaret migrated to MA/US, and she married in Waltham, MA, in 1884. Peter GAVIN had also been born ~1860 in Co. Galway and also came over in 1883 (separately). The couple remained in Waltham and had 8 children.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Hello.

I know you posted your query 8 yrs. ago, but I just found it. I thought I would mention that my husband's great-grandmother's father was a Patrick WHALEN (WHELAN). He was probably born in Co. Galway, but in the early 1800's. The great-grandmother (his daughter), Margaret WHALEN / WHELAN, was born ~1860 in Co. Galway, Ireland.

Margaret migrated to MA/US in 1883 and married in Waltham, MA, in 1884.

Greetings, researchers.

In my original post I indicated that Thomas Joseph WHALEN was born on Nov 09, 1880 in NY (per WWI draft card).

Based on Thomas's age (22) on the record of his 1914 marriage to Anne Mary O'BRIEN, I conclude that the above-identified Thomas is not the correct individual.

The Thomas Joseph WHALEN I am researching was more probably born June 23, 1891 (per WWI draft card); in 1917 he was married with one child and resided at 20 Sherman Avenue in Yonkers. A poor scan of his WWI draft card is attached.

If I remember Yonkers, Morningside Place is in Sacred Heart parish. If you have the date and place of death I would try to get the death cetificate, or the Yonkers Library has the local newspaper on Micro-fiche, if you have the date.

Ann Whalen obituary

A while back I had been in touch with the Antigonish heritage museum about my whalen ancestors. They were great and sent me a lot of info on my line. But they sent me a death record for an Ann Whalen that I can't place. Out of all the info they sent this is the only record. I think it belongs to me and I just haven't gotten that far back yet.

She was 70 years old in 1868 (which would put her birth abt 1798) and was born in Ireland. Fathers surname might be Berrigan, so I am assuming she married a whalen?

If I follow my line, I am guessing she might have had a son Lawrence. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Hi,

I would be very interested in the adoption record. Annie is my great-grandfather's sister. Both of her parents died and I have not been able to find what happened to the children during this time. I do have records of Annie getting married later.

Thanks,
Dave Whelan

There was a James Whalen born in November 1872 in Becket, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts. He was the son of Irish imigrants: Rodger and Elizabeth Whalen.

I don't know if this is the one you're looking for. This one was still living in Becket in 1900.
