Looking for info on John A Whalen, b-1923 in MA,d-1975 in MA, married Eleanor J Sparks in MA. Any family info would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Bob,

I can just offer an FYI. My husband's great-grandparents were a GAVIN / WHALEN couple who arrived in MA/US in 1883 and settled in Waltham, MA, and had many children there. Mrs. Margaret (WHALEN) GAVIN probably traveled alone from Co. Galway, Ireland, as a young woman, and I have not been able to find out if she had relatives in New England.

Have you asked on Lists or Boards for a look-up in the 1920 MA census? That might show WHALEN families / couples in MA that year.

I just took a quick look and there were ~530 WHALEN people in MA in 1920, with ~160 of them in Suffolk County and ~100 of them in Middlesex County.

And there were 38 John WHALEN's in MA in 1920, with 18 in Suffolk Co. and 13 in Middlesex Co.

And there were ~200 people in MA in 1920 with the WHELAN spelling. Again most in Suffolk Co. and Middlesex Co. And 22 John WHELAN's.

I cannot check the 1930 census. Other people can.

Hi Bob, I know its been a couple months since your original post but I think I have your John A. I'm researching that line. He was my grandmothers brother. If this is your John A, I have the name Jack written in parenthesis, and I vaguely remember my mom telling me he went by the name Jack, but I will find out for sure tomorrow.
