Re: researching whaanga family
Hi Liza I come from a small country town in New Zealand that is steeped in Whaanga history. My grandmother was Whaanga and was the granddaughter of the Chief Ihaka Whaanga. Please email me if you wish to know more. Good luck in your research. Rae

Re: researching whaanga family
Thanks for replying, Rae. My family is from Nuhaka, Hawkes Bay. My grandmother is Parehuia Irwin (nee Whaanga) and she is the eldest of 13, i think. Her mother was Mereira (not sure if it is spelt like that!) Whaanga. My grandfather, John Irwin, was adopted, but I know my family knows of his original family so if you know anything about the Irwins I would also be interested in that. Looking forward to hearing from you, Liza

Re: researching whaanga family
Hi Liza,
Well, isn't it a small world. I too come from the small town of Nuhaka and yes I do know of your grandparents Polly and John Irwin. Do you have any contact with your whanau from Nuhaka. I ask this, because Polly's brother Paora is very knowledgeable in the Whaanga Whakapapa and I am sure would be of great help to you in your research. I actually have him on video reciting the Whaanga Whakapapa and it has been of great help to me and my research. Your great grandmothers name was Mereaira Horomona, who married Tureia Whaanga. As far as I know they had 12 children - Pare, Rangi, Arapata, Paora, Tiemi, Teddy, Rakai, William, Makere, Alice, Cairo and Tureia. Sorry I cannot help you with your Irwin line, but the Whaanga line is a very interesting one. Let me know if this is of any use to you or if there is anything else I can help you with. Always happy to help our whanau trace their lineage. Good luck Rae

Re: researching whaanga family
Hello. I am the grand daughter of Josephine Whaanga, and would like to have some more information about the Whaanga family tree. I am only 13, and I live in Tauranga. Both my grandparents Albert Brown (was Herora) and Joesphine Whaanga come from Nuhaka. So far I know, Josehine's parents are, Hiraina Pere and Kahutia Whaanga. His parents are Iharaira Whaanga and Pahemata Ringahore. I have more information about Ihaka Whaanga's 1st wife family, but I found out I come from the 3rd wife. Here is the information about the 1st wife. Ihaka Whaanga 1st, had Ihaka Whaanga 2nd(with his 1st wife), Ihaka Whaanga 2nd had 9 children in total with two wives. First wife, Apikara te Hau, they had Te Kanapa Whaanga, ? Whaanga, Korowiria Whaanga, Kararaina Whaanga, Hiriwi Kino Whaanga and Ihaia Iopa Whaanga. Korowiria had one child Tureia Whaanga. Tureia had two wives. Second wife, Mereaira had 12 children (this includes Polly) I have the names of the 12 children. Do you know any information about Iharaira Whaanga and his parents, grandparents etc? Thankyou,Shaye

Re: researching whaanga family
Yes, you are quite correct. Titoko Iharaira Whaanga is the son of Ihaka Whaanga and TePaea Taruke. He and his wife Pahimata had five sons named Kahutia, Rihimoana, Niri, Wano and Paraire. Pahimata outlived her husband Titoko by many years and displayed a kindly and gentle disposition. Of slight build, she preferred her own cultural pursuits and spoke only her native tongue. Kahutia Whaanga attended Te Aute college as did most of Ihaka Whaanga's grandsons and was also a teacher there. Kahutia married Hiraina Pere and together they had seven children named Kura, TeRataau (Tilly), Hana, Riria, Titoko, Josephine and Wahine. Yes, I too come from Nuhaka and am also decended from Ihaka Whaanga and his 3rd wife TePaea Taruke. I do know your grandparents Ali and Josephine who I believe live in the Taranaki region. My sister sees quite a bit of Ali. Ali went through his schooling years with my Uncle Gary Nepia, who tells me Ali was a bit of a mischief in his younger days. I believe Josephine is the youngest in their family, but I may be wrong there. Aunty Hana still lives in Nuhaka and is a wonderful lady and is very steeped in Whaanga knowledge. If you are ever down that way, do call in and see her. I am sure she will welcome you with open arms as she does us all. Anyway, I hope this is of help to you and your search. If there is anything else you would like to know about our whanau, don't hesitate to ask. Always happy to help out in any way I can.
