Graduate, Wadena High School, Wadena, Minn. Served, U.S. Air Force, WWII. Graduate, Carleton College, Northfield, Minn.; University of Minnesota Medical School. Internship, St. Luke's Hospital, Chicago. Surgery residency, Minneapolis, VA Hospital. Medical honors, Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary; American College of Surgeons Fellow; Phi Rho Sigma medical fraternity. General surgery practice with Olmsted Medical Group, Rochester, Minn. (1956-61); Lincoln Clinic, Lincoln (1961-87). Staff member at all Lincoln hospitals. Retired and became medical director with Centeon Plasma Center. Sertoma life member; Torch Club. Boy Scouts of America life member. Co-founder, Capitol City Swimming and Diving League. NE School Activities Association, Outstanding Service Award in Diving; Weyhrauch Award Honor in Diving and Academic Excellence, University of Nebraska.
Survivors: wife, Janet; daughters, son-in-law, Victoria W. Hurd, Lincoln, Mary W. Hunt, Charlotte, N.C., Liz Shea-McCoy and Dr. Michael McCoy, Lincoln; son, W. David, Topeka, Kan.; sons, daughters-in-law, Bruce B. and LuAnn Bailey, Juneau, Alaska, Thomas A. and Roxane Lebsack, Gig Harbor, Wash., James W. and Amy Hillenbrand, Sante Fe, N.M.; 20 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; twin brother, Dr. Robert, Waterloo, Iowa. Preceded in death by brother Richard.
Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, First-Plymouth Congregational Church, 2000 D St. The Rev. Dr. Otis E. Young. No visitation. Cremation.
