Jacob Aaron Westervelt was a shipbuilder born 1800 in Bergen Co, New Jersey. His shipyard produced a number of steamships and clipperships. One of these clipperships, "Sweepstakes" was painted in 1853 by Fitz Hugh Lane (1804-1865). The painting is located in the Museum of the City of New York.
