French research seems daunting but it can be done. You really need a more exact location. Does the obituary give a specific location?

WELTER from Eastern France

Just found an obituary stating that one of Marks/Max Welter's daughters was born in Eastern France. Not the greatest news, but at least it takes away the ambiguity of Luxembourg and Germany as other birthplace possibilities.

Where should I start my search? I've never done French research. Here are the details:

Marks/Max Welter b. about 1800
Clara Schulte Welter b. about 1812
children born overseas:
Anna Cora Welter b. 1835
Marie Welter b. about 1837
Regina Welter b. 1838
John Welter b. 1845

They settled in Menominee, Jo Daviess county, Illinois between 1845-1847. More children were born there.

Any help appreciated.

Catherine Welter-married Richard Cook, then Willie Plaetsch, Staten Island NY

I am looking for more information on my 3rd Great grandfather. My facts are limited.

He came from Germany, so maybe his name was anglicized? I have notes that say Kooch. He died in Staten Island.

He married "Catherine Welter" which I have also see as Caterina Welters/Walters, who was also born in Germany.

Their son, John, was my 2nd great grandfather and he was born in Staten Island July 18, 1857, died June 3, 1930. I have his death certificate listing the above names and their births in Germany.

They also had another son, Frederick.

NOT confirmed facts, but information that may be factual:

Catherine Welter birth date and place: Aug 10 1819 in Hesse Darmstadt

Catherine may have gone on to marry Willie Plaetsch, and have a son with him in 1865. Which would put Richard Cook's death before 1865.

Please let me know if any of these people are known to you! Many thanks!!!

Elissa Wahl
briansmom99@yahoo.com

Welters from Luxembourg/Germany/France to Dubuque, Iowa region

I'm still looking for the birthplace(s) of my 2nd GGF, Marks/Max Welter and wife Clara Schulte Welter. Marks was born about 1800/1801 in one of the three countries depending upon which census you're looking at. I've been told he spoke French and was called "Frenchy" by the locals. He settled in Menominee, Jo Daviess County, Illinois which is across the river from Dubuque, Iowa. There are a number of Welter families in this area (and Grant County, Wisconsin, just above the Wisconsin/Illinois line) who have similar birthplaces. I can't help but think that any of the Welters who were about Marks's age in this area had to be related. He and Clara brought 4 children with them and had 6 more once they got here. The only naturalization record (actually just the index at this point) that could possibly be his is in the name Max Walter. Marks died in 1884 and may not have completed his citizenship process.

Grant County, Wisconsin Welters--Fredrick, Theresa

I am trying to follow up on two marriages indexed on the Wisconsin Historical Society website: Fredrick Welter, married 6 Jun 1895 and Theresa Welter, married 4 Oct 1884, both in Grant County.

I thought I'd be able to find these records (or other indexes) on familysearch and/or ancestry, but no, nothing. I have a Therese Welter in my family and this could very well be her first marriage to John Glynn, but their first recorded child was born 1882 and John was listed as single on the 1880 census. My presumption is that they were married between 1880 and 1882.

I'm not finding a Fred(e)rick Welter on the 1900 census.

Anyone know anything about either of these people?

Thanks
Robin

WELTER families--Crookston MN, Des Moines IA, Dubuque IA, Jamestown WI, E. Dubuque IL

Trying to determine if there are any connections between the Welter families living in all these places in the 19th and 20th centuries.

While following one of my relatives through the Ancestry records, (William Darrell "Darrell" Welter 1919-?), I found a 1955 Des Moines city directory where Darrell lived at 5407 SW 17th and was employed as a salesman for the UARCO Business Forms company.

The listing following Darrell's caught my eye: Welter, Derald D. (Evelyn R.). Living at the same address and he was also a salesman for UARCO.

So what are the chances these two Welter boys lived together and were NOT related? Slim, I think.
But Darrell was b. in Jamestown, Grant Co., Wisconsin and Derald was born in Des Moines.

Darrell, son of William Frank, grandson of Joseph, gr-grandson of Marks (Max)
Derald, son of Theo John, grandson of Nick

I don't find Nick in my Welter tree at all. Joseph was the first of Marks's children to be born in the U.S (E. Dubuque), while Nick was born in Germany. They weren't brothers, were they cousins?

I hope someone here can provide some insight.

TIA,
Robin
Actually, it is being held this weekend 9/20-9/21/2013. There are many Polish families in the area referred to as Marche'. I am not sure but i think they settled here as railroad employees.
If you are interested in contacting the church you can do so at: Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 7006 Jasna Gora Drive, North Little Rock, AR 72118, phone 851-2763.
Good luck

I have that line back to the immigrants. I didn't have his exact birth and death dates, thanks for those.

Mark Welter, sometimes called Mike, son of John Welter and Alice English. John b. about 1845 in France/Germany/Luxembourg (take your pick) d. 1918 Kansas. Alice b. 1850 Holland/France/Germany (again, take your pick) d. 1896 Kansas. They are both buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Perry, Jefferson co., Kansas

John Welter, son of Marks/Max Welter and Clara Schulte. Marks b. abt 1800 France/Germany/Luxembourg d. 1884 Illinois. Clara b. abt 1812 France/Germany/Luxembourg d. 1892 Wisconsin. He buried Nativity BVM Cemetery, Menominee, Jo Daviess co., Illinois. She buried St. Francis de Sales Cemetery, Hazel Green, Grant co., Wisconsin.

They may have separated or divorced, Clara was not listed with Marks on the 1880 census, although I haven't found her living anywhere else.

Marks spoke French, but we don't know for sure where they came from. I suspect that the area was subject to shifting political boundaries since every census said something different. I'm leaning toward Luxembourg as it seems to be mentioned the most.

Where do you fit into the family?

the Mark Welter lineage is a century old naming tradition in my family. Mark Welter is my great-great-grandfather. Followed by him was Mark Kermit Welter (1909-1968), whos son was my grandfather, the late Mark Stanley Welter (1938-1999). His son is Mark Jeffrey (b. 1961), my father, who was followed by my brother, Mark Gilbert (b. 1987). All of the Mark Welters, including me, have been born in Yuma, Arizona since Mark Stanley.

Now, just where do you fit in?

I am just starting to search my family tree and have come accross my g.g.g. grandmother, Margareth (Welter) Gales in the 1880 Federal Census. It lists her as married to John(perhaps Johannes) Gales - both immigrants from Luxembourg. They are residents of Poyner, Black Hawk, Iowa. Perhaps she is a relative to Eileen Welter? I notice from looking at the census form that their neighbors are also immigrants from Luxembourg. Was their a large population of folks from Luxemboug in Iowa? I wonder what events precipitated their emmigration. Does anyone have any information on this? I have been unsuccessful finding this on the internet.
