From what my mother said, my great grandfather came to the states and it was the person that took the info down that spelled his name the way it did, but one day we were talking to her cousin and she said it was because my g-grandfather was drunk when the babies were born and that's why. I don't believe the second version because my grandfather spelled his name Wejcman, my grandfather and one of his brothers and sister spelled it the same, another of his brothers spelled it Wecman and the last spelled it Weisman. To make matters worse, in the census I have also seen it spelled Wytzman.

Re: Minnie/Alternate spellings

Did Minnie speak any English? There's a Minnie in my family: her father was Morris Weisman (I'm not sure of the spelling), shortened to Weiss at Ellis Island. I believe that Morris lived in Philadelphia and then relocated to Texas. Morris was originally Russian but probably spoke Yiddish, as my grandmother (Minnie's sister Sonia) also speaks some.

As to the alternate spellings, I think it has to do with phonetic spellings. When people from Russia/Germany/wherever came over to the US, they probably didn't speak much English. The immigration people probably spelled their last names phonetically, resulting in extra s's, n's, etc.

My grandfather was Morris Weis(s)man, shortened to Weiss at Ellis Island. He was born in Moscow and had 10-15 brothers and sisters, the names of whom I don't know. He came over in 1920 with two siblings. His mother's name was Sarah, and I know but forget his father's name, and they were bakers. He married Ida Cherry and had three daughters: Esther, Minnie (I think-- she lives in Texas and we've never met) and my grandmother, Sonia, who married Benjamin Miller and had my mother, Debra. The Weismans/Weisses of whom I speak are all Jewish. Anything sound familiar?

I don't know much but share
the same questions about the language my grandmother spoke (I
suspect Yiddish too) and other curious habits.
For what it is worth my gm's name was Minnie.
I think her father's name was either Charles and Carl.
Any clues?

Weisman-Wiesman-Wiseman

Can't say the exact reason - but I have a g-grandmother whose name was spelled Weisman. What I've found is the spelling sometimes was changed to Americanize Jewish family names. This was done either to become a part of the community they had moved to or because marriage between members of two different religious groups were more easily accepted by families. Quite a shame, because Jewish traditions and history have been lost this way.

I am looking for anyone who might be related to my boyfriend.

He is the only child of Mr. Mrs. Patricia Weisman (name was Americanized to Wiseman) of Pompano Beach, Florida

Mr. and Mrs. Patricia Weisman died in early 80's.

He is the only remaining member of his lineage to our knowledge, unless there are relatives out there.

Mr. and Mrs. Patricia Weisman came from Germany at a young age with their parents.

My boyfriend's parents were both only child to their parents and they grew-up and married each other.

The grandparents have died, and the parents have died.

The father's family is from Germany, and the mother's family is from Russia, but mother's family moved to Germany from Russia, and escaped Germany for America when WWII broke out

The couple had one and only son (my boyfriend) who is named Lonnie Weisman-last name changed to Wiseman at age four. His parents called him Lons.

We plan to get married soon and would like the wedding to not only have my family members.

If there are relatives, in Germany, or Russia or southern Florida or Israel please contact me.

God Bless

sincerely,

Becca

Susan,

Don't know anything about different spellings except I have noticed that some of our Weisman's have had their name spelled differently in a few items (usually its a second "s" in the name)

I don't know of any of the ancestors heading out to WI but haven't been able to get too terribly far back--so I suppose it's a possibility.

Sorry I'm not a lot of help at this time!
Nancy

WEISMAN from Latvia - Jewish family

My pgm was Chaya Ita (Anna) WEISMAN. She was born approx. 1876, and I believe she married my gf, Hirsch FELDMAN, in Rezekne in approximately 1897. They had 3 children, Tania, Luba and my father, Jascha (Jack). Hirsch died in 1933 in Dvinsk (Daugavpils). My grandmother, daughter Luba and Luba's husband daughter were killed in Shoah in 1941. In early 1950's a cousin named WEISMAN came to visit in USA, I think his name was Paul - he was in early 20's at that time. There may be family surviving in South Africa, Israel and/or Belgium. Would appreciate hearing from anyone with any leads. My family tree is posted on Family Tree of Jewish People at jewishgen.org.
