I just purchased "Vacherie" a book written by
Elton Oubre. This is the second printing of this book with updated information on the families from the Vacherie area. I was shocked to read what he wrote about the progenitor of the
Webre family in
Louisiana. I'm wondering if we will have to rewrite the history on this family. The following is a passage from his book.
" The
Webre Family of Vacherie. Jean
Lefevre, a French soldier, discharged May 21, 1756, is responsible for one of the worst cases of mistaken idetity in the geneology of the
German Coast. As a native of France, and as Jean
Fevre, son of Jean
Fevre and Catherine
Stein Matterine, he married at the
German Coast church on May 1, 1753 to Anne Catherine
Tregre. He signed the marriage record as Jean Levefere".
What do you make of this? If this is true then all the information about
Johann Webre is incorrect and not a part of the
Webre history as we know it. Tell me it isn't so.
