Walter R. Washburn, b.abt1871, of Wilson Co./Johnson Co., TX, son of John/Irene

I have an original postcard photograph of “your brother, WRW”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Card was mailed from DeSoto (Dallas Co.) TX to his sister, and is dated Nov. 21, 1900. In the photo are two men, Walter and a man who was his “kin”, and it was mailed to Aurelia Wright, McLeansboro, Ill., and he said “we met in Dallas recently and thought we would remember you with this {picture}”.

In the 1880 Wilson Co., TX, Aurelia Washburn was age 11, and Walter was 9, both born IL. Their parents were John and Irene. IL Death Index for Aurelia Wright shows her father was John Washburn, and mother Irene Ely Washburn. The 1910 census for Johnson Co., TX shows Walter R. Washburn, born abt 1872, was a physician. In 1920, Walter was married and lived in Johnson Co., TX, still a physician.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Walter R. Washburn.

F.B. Washburn, No. Bridgewater, MA

I have no connection to this family. I found this while doing other research - it appeared in the April 8, 1858 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette:

"A CHILD BURNED TO DEATH. A daughter of F.B. Washburn of North Bridgewater, (Mass.) was on Tuesday, with other small children engaged in burning a quantity of old grass which they had collected in a pile near the house. While playing around the flames her clothes caught fire and she was burned in a shocking manner. Her mother found her clinging to the fence and screaming, the fire having just reached her hair. She lingered until four o'clock Wednesday morning, when death relieved her from her terrible sufferings. The mother was badly burned about her hands and arms in putting out the fire."

Re: Washburn in Vermont

Craig: I know your's is a very old post, but I am a decendent of Jasper Catlin and Melissa Calfirna (Bennett) Washburn.

I have information written by Sarah M. Washburn (Jasper's daughter) stating that her grandfather (Joseph H. C.) was born in the year 1810 and died on Dec. 1, 1883 in Sherlott (sp.) Vermont. However, on a trip to Vermont in 1992 I found a birth record for a Joseph Washbourn born on December 1, 1809, his Father is listed as Elisha Washbourn. There is also a birth record for Ansel Washbourn born Jan. 21, 1801 - father listed as Elisha Washbourn.

On that same trip I found a death record for a Henry Washburn on Dec. 3, 1883 in Charlotte, VT, which I am sure is Joseph Hiram's death record. Also, Sarah lists her grandmother as Julia Marie Brighum and her death as March 23, 1881 in Charlotte, VT and I found a death record on that date for a Mary Washburn in the same records. I am pretty sure these are their death records. (I noted that you have Julia Bingam. I have not been able to confirm if her maiden name was Bingam or Brighum)

Joseph H. had another son, Hiram (Jasper's older brother). Hiram is not with his family in the 1850 Census. He would have been about 17 years old. The 1850 Census shows Hiram living with an Ansel Washburn. Ansel is listed as a broom maker. Ansel is the age to be the Ansel mentioned in the birth record, above. Broom making was a skill that both Jasper and Ashley had (I have a picture Ashley Amos Washburn with his broom machine and I also have a small broom he made). I currently think that Joseph H.C. Washburn was the son of Elisha Washburn Jr. and Hanna Clark, and the brother of Ansel Washburn, but I do not have concrete proof of that. Have you gathered additional information since your 2005/06 posting?

> John Washburn who married Francis Cooke's daughter

Neither of the John Washburns who were immigrants in Bridgewater married a daughter of Francis Cooke. The father married Margery Moore and the son married 1st Elizabeth Mitchell and 2nd Elizabeth (___) Packard, widow of Samuel Packard. Elizabeth Mitchell was the granddaughter of Francis Cooke, not his daughter. She was the daughter of Experience Mitchell and his first wife, Jane Cooke, daughter of Francis and Hester (Mahieu) Cooke.

John Washburn, the father, did not come on the Mayflower [see any edition of Bradford's "Of Plimoth Plantation"] . The first record of him in New England is from 02-Jan-1632/33 [PCR 1:6], which would suggest an arrival in 1632 - there is no passenger record of his immigration. His wife Margery, with sons John and Philip, came on the Elizabeth & Ann in 1635 [Hotten 57].

It is not known when William, brother of the elder John, came to New England. The last record of him in Bengeworth is from 1637, and the first record of him in Stratford CT is in 1647 [TAG 36:62].

Dale H.
> i have managed to somehow track down the washburn line back to
> Tancred de Tancarville, b. abt. 890 in Scandinavia.

If you can prove that with contemporary records please post it. In 25 years of research I have never seen anything that can be proved earlier than John and Martha (Stevens) washburn, grandparents of immigrants John and Philip Washburn.

Dale H.
Anyone wanting to know more about the name Washburn should read the book 'The Washburns in America' if you can find one by Bruce Washburne. That is if you can find them. He self published and sold the two volumes for $175, and I know this because I have them. Tancred a viking from Denmark was with Rollo the viking who overtook Normandy. He then settled there and the ruins of his castle and the church he built still stand in Tancredville. He cared for the son of Richard the Great when he went to war and raised the boy, William, after Robert died in battle. William the conquerer was the boy he became. If you go to Normandy near the castle is the mansion of the Washburn family and if you can prove you are a decendant of the clan they will give you a free tour of the Washburn mansion. In the fifteen hundreds when the rulers or Kings or government decided everyone should have a last name because of the confusion, they chose our name became the clan lived in the county of Wash down by the burn (river). That was the descendants of Tancred who conquered England later. That is all I remember right now because the books are stored away under lock and key and I choose not to take the time right now to dig them out....lol.

It took place in Plymouth, and the original record is found on p. 88 of:

Lee D. van Antwerp and Ruth Wilder Sherman, Editors, "Vital Records Of Plymouth, Massachusetts, To The Year 1850" (Camden, ME: Picton Press, 1993)

Although Joseph's marriage to Deliverance Orcutt is well established no contemporary record of the wedding has been found.

Dale H.
Just to make things more interesting... I have James Washburn (son of Abraham Washburn and Mary Weston) married to a Sarah B (Unknown)- not Ruth Rice. They had three children in Pelham, MA (Garner 1792-1814, Roxey 1795-1882 and Hiram 1800-1880 - my ancestor.)

My James Washburn was born in 1760 in Plymouth. The James Washburn I found who was married to Ruth Rice was born in 1746 in Leicester, MA and died in 1797 in VT.

Given that Abraham and Mary both died in Pelham, MA, and Mary was only six when the other James was born, it seems more likely that the James married to Sarah B is the son of Abraham and Mary.

I don't have parents listed for the James Washburn who was married to Ruth Rice.

?????

Kay Black
kayb95@aol.com

I reviewed some of my notes, actually Eric Brittan, a descendent of James and Ruth through Levi was the last to have it. He died in 1970, that's where my trail goes cold on those records, his family might have it. He descrbed it as the family ledger.

Thank you for the information. When you mention the "library" are you referring to the holdings here at Ancestry or the library in Woodstock? I know that the library of the New England Historic Genealogical Society also collects family bibles donated to them. I will check their holdings as well. This bible sounds like an important source if it can be located. Thanks again for your help!

James and Ruth are together, in an unmarked plot on their first family farm, his second wife, Mariah remarried the year James died to a Samuel Averill. Eric Britton passed away in 1970 but I have copies of his letters, about 30 pages. I sent copies of most to the Woodstock Historical Society. Jennifer Donaldson researched the West Meeting House burial grounds and didn't find them there. She send out a land specialist and he seems to have determined the exact location. Since James was a Revolutionary War Vet,(battle of Saratoga,) his resting place should be marked somehow. Eric descended through Levi's daughter, Phebe Lois. If you would like copies of his letters, please e-mail me directly, jamman03@yahoo.com
This is very exciting and quite interesting as well! I descend from Levi,(he was my G-G-G-Grandfather) who died in Woodstock in 1875. He was the oldest man in town when he died at the age of 97. He came to Woostock in his mother's arms around 1780(Ruth Washburn)and she died shortly thereafter, having given birth to Ruth and James' fifth child. Levi's obit states that his parents were buried in the Old Meetinghouse Cemetery (on Wyman Rd in Woodstock, VT) I have been there several times, and have been unable to locate the headstones. I was aware of the comment in Dana's History Book, and assumed Ruth was buried in the field. However, since James took a second wife, I thought he might have been buried elsewhere. I doubt the second Mrs. Washburn would have buried her husband next to the first Mrs. Washburn. Just conjecture on my part. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO GET IN TOUCH WITH ERIC BRITTAN, AS HE DESCENDS FROM MY LEVI LINE? The fact that he has this great info is wonderful! Regarding your question about Abrahams first wife, that is a mystery as well. My research shows that Abraham was my James' father, but there is doubt that Mary Weston (Abraham's second wife) could have been James' mother, as they were married several years AFTER James was allegedly born. so I have been looking for Abraham's first wife as well. None of the records I have seen show her name. Thank you so much for the great information. If you anything more info on James and Ruth I would so much appreciate it.

I descend from Levi's brother, Joseph Rice Washburn. I have copies of correspondance from an Eric R Brittan, another descendant of Levi. He knew the location of the Washburn Family graveyard on the James and Ruth Washburn farm in Woodstock, VT. The stones were destroyed in the late 1800's for farmland but the location of James and Ruth have been documented. Does anyone know the name of Abraham's first wife, James' mother? I have Mary Weston as Abraham's second wife. Thanks

Sorry, I don't, the Washburns are the main focus of my research. Ruth McCrillis' descendants might still have it. She was born in Woodstock. The library maintains files on early families, they might have it. I got this info from some letters from an E.R. Brittan who descended from Levi Washburn, James' son by his first wife, Ruth. He never saw the Bible either but knew of it's existance. He called Ruth, Moriah's daughter, "the keeper of family records." He died in 1970.

Last Missing Child of Enoch Washburn & Elisabeth Miller of Pennsylvania Has Been Found

For years a few of us descendants through Enoch Washburn & Elisabeth Miller have tried to find one last child from what I call the Civil War Generation and that was Margaretta Ann. She has now been found, whom she married and exactly where she was including where she is buried. It even tied together a few pictures which had us stumped. Daughter of Enoch & Elisabeth Washburn, Margaretta Ann, married Valentine Snyder of Bucks County, PA about 1862/63. Margaretta died 28 November 1921 and Valentine died 15 September 1911, both in Hampton, NJ. She lived out the last 25 years of her life just 5 miles from where I live, Hampton, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey. We have most all of her decscendants to present day, they just don't know we exist yet. Her children are Cassandra, William, Emory, George & Rovanah. Rovanah died an infant 1883-1884. Haven't found where William Snyder went mainly due to the OVER Abundance of William Snyder's. Margaretta & Valentine Snyder's descendants married into ALPAUGH, JOHNSTON, SMITH, PICKEL & more

I received an answer from Mayflower.... Gave me the names as someone has posted, but no documentation...it was unsourced. I have been studying the will of Thomas Jr. Washburn as his second son was Nathaniel
His will is dated 1729/1732. I think is father was Thomas ... his father being John Washburn descandant of Frances Cooke.
I'm continuing to search on the above premise.

I have been working. Thomas Sr who married Deliverance Packard had a son they named Thomas who married Elizabeth Howland, who the Mayflower says is not the mother, but I believe she is..... Hints I have been looking at say he was born 1928 which puts another light on things.
We've been to the cem where he was buried but their is no marker. Michael's ggg grandfather Daniel Sullivan is buried in the same cem.
This is the premise I am going to work on to find docuementation.
"Smiles" Lorna
