I have his parents as John Wartman 1796-bef. June 1860 and Martha B. " Milly " Giles 1811-abt. 1886 which fits census:
1860 Mecklenburg County census in the 98th Regiment Magistrial District on page 39, dwelling 310, family 303 has widowed Martha Wartman,age 47, farmer, with values 500/250 with following living with her: Thomas age 21, Tabitha age 23, James age 16, Elizabeth age 13, Benjamin age 11, and Wilson age 7. Neighbors include Wm. B. Cleaton family, Joseph H. Rainey and wife, George Connell and family, and Richard Livingston Vaughan and family.

1870 South Hill district,Mecklenburg Co.,Va census has Martha as head of household. Page 456b,line 26, household 317, family number 266.
