Hello Maureen & Alan,
My connection is from Rose Swanson Lawrence Born 1859 - 1943 Castlemaine. Parents Francis & Richard ( Biological father George Swanson).
Rose married my Great Grand Father John Crerar in 1916.
I was wondering regarding Rose Walpole, Did she & Francis know each other back in England? Would that be the reason for her coming to Australia after her husband died to follow Francis. Rose is buried with Francis son in Campbells Creek.
Would you know anything more regarding her connection to the family?
Mary MacDonald Nee Crerar Australia

Re: Walpoles of Ireland-New Haven, Connecticut and NYC

Angelina, it's great hearing from you regarding the Walpole's.

I have been trying to research the family for years now and keep hitting brick walls. Charles and Virginia were my cousins and were a cousin to my father, George who died when I was very young. I remember they had several children (as I remember: 3 boys and I believe 2 girls). The last time I had contact with the family would've been way back in the 1960's when they lived in Astoria and my brother, my mother and I visited with them.

I've been able to gather some information on Walpole family members in New Haven, Connecticut and in NYC where the family lived on East 99th Street. As I remember my father while growing up was referred to as "Georgie Walpole" and would've been approximately the same age as Charles.

In a strange coincidence my wife and I now reside in South Carolina also. It would be great to get together and exchange some research and family stories. I can't believe after all of these years this post finally got a response and hopefully a family connection.

George

I was reading a post of yours from 2000. I was disappointed to see that John Walpole married Polly James UNTIL I saw he remarried Francis A James, in a later post!

When you said, "John married again and apparently the other Tennessee Walpoles are descended from the second wife, Francis A. James had a farm at Mt Juliet, Tn in Wilson County which my grandfather Jacob inherited.”

I believe I am part of those “Other TN Walpoles”!

Do you know the other children of John and Francis? Was there a Tom who married Frances Johnson?

Please let me know if there is a connection.

Dear Taisha my name is Silvia Davoli and I am the curator at Strawberry Hill House, the aim of my job is to retrace as many works of art as possible which were once part of the Horace Walpole collection. I am now trying (disparately!) to retrace the Portrait of RObert Walpole 2nd earl of Orford father to the 3rd Earl your ancestor. This painting was for some time at Wolterton Hall (between 1842 and sometimes at the end of the 19th century). I didn't find it in any of the auction sales linked to the Walpoles both 19 and 20th c.
In 1842 when the Horace Walpole collection was sold it was described as follows:
Sale Text: A ditto [three-quarter length portrait] of Robert Walpole, second Earl of Orford, Auditor of the Exchequer, Master of Fox Hounds, and Knight of the Bath, eldest son of Sir Robert Walpole by his first wife, in a red velvet dress, by Richardson.
I was wondering if you have ever heard about this painting. I know is a long try but who knows?
Thank you for your kind attention (if needed I have an image of it)

Hi Holly & Nate, I have corres. with you bef. Nate, but it was yrs ago. So glad to see your latest messages. I think Zilphia Walpole b. 1802 Georgia may be the daug. of Frances A. Walpole, the wife of John Thomas Walpole. Zilphia m. John Barnett b. 1800 Georgia in 1823. They are my 4th gr. grandparents. They lived in Lauderdale Co., MS abt 1830-1850 then moved to San Saba, TX where they died. Their first child was named Frances Amanda Barnett - prob. after her mother. I need to prove who Zilphia's parents are. I am hoping to make the connection & wonder if you have found any information over the years that would help me. In the book abt 1938, The Call of the San Saba by Alma Ward Hamrick - she stated that Zilphia Walpole descended from The House of Walpole in England.I'm happy to share what I have & help in any way. Thanks so much, June Hamrick Schaub
Holly, hello I am also descended from James Albert Walpole. I haven't been online for awhile but I do have Lots of info on the Walpoles. In 1982 book there is a reference to Thomas Walpole of Brunswick Co. Virginia being poisoned by slaves in 1792. It also covers Gabriel's Revolt which was sort of started by a run in between Gabriel Prosser and Absolom Johnson (a Walpole son in law) in 1799 that landed Gabriel in the county jail and started him thinking about a slave revolt. I imagine that Ole Absolom and his Walpole relatives were on the to do list, I have not found a link yet to the Prime Minister of England. I do believe that the link will be earlier as I believe we are probably related to Caesar Walpole who settled in VA about 1660. It is too bad the Union Army destroyed the records for this time period or we would know more. Just let me know what sort of information you want and I will look up what I have for you and either email you copies or mail them to you.

Nate Boyd
Thomas, Charles, Gilbert, James, Albert, Authur, Bonnie

my great grandfather was James Oscar Walpole of Arkansas, son of James Albert Walpole, grandson of Gilbert Harrison Walpole and great grandson of Charles Harrison Walpole and gggrandson of Thomas Walpole(whom I believe was born in England). They are supposed to be descended from the Prime minister Walpole but I have no proof of that. James Albert was on of four brothers, John Richard, William Norman, and Thomas Gilbert. Would love to share info and pictures of these brothers. all of them were Civil War veterans.

I am tracing my family and have been stuck for a very long time trying to go back on the side of my great, great, great grandmother: Maria Walpole. Possible birth @ 1811 in the London area. Married Newman Glover. Her children included my great, great grandmother Rebecca Ann Glover who married a John Davis in Gloucestershire (Wotton Under Edge) around 1861. Any leads would be lovely! Lots of missing branches in the family tree.

Karin, I would love to help you. Start with yourself and work backwards in your family. Or any of your ancestors
enter their names and any dates or esp. counties where they were born or lived and the states. I found alot in the Georgia/Louisiana area and am trying to make a connection to my 4 gr. grandmother Zilphia or Zilpha Walpole b. 1802 in Georgia. I don't have anything on her parents, But she did marry John Barnett b. 1800 in Georgia also and they lived in Ala and Mississippi and then Texas. If you want to write to me familyhunter@earthlink.net. I am in Ariz. I can call you and talk you thru it also. June

I am a direct descendant of Walpole and have managed to assemple a fair amount of info on Georgina thanks to the grandaughter of Richard Maurice Bucke who visited England about 30 years ago. If possible, I would prefer not to do so now via this board but thru correspondence. RMB's grandson and I kept in touch until his death 4-5 years ago.

I'm seeking information on my great grandfather Patrick Walpole. He was born in Ireland in 1839. He came to Chicago, married Anna Hyland from New York. They had several children, Frank Thomas (my grandfather who's name became Wapole) Anna, and Charles. They possibly had a Raymond and Mary as well. It was told to me that they originally stayed with friends in Ohio, don't know what city, before coming to Chicago. Patrick Walpole died in 1893. I have seen his named spelled several different ways, Walpool for one. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
