I've also been hunting for more information regarding the Walling Family. Admittedly, I only recently began my research, so I already know I am missing some obvious info. I'd love to get connected to others researching this line, so glad to see a board active as recently as 1 year ago.

Ferdinand's brother William is my GGGrandfather.
His wife was Anna C Weitz (Wurtz)
b. 26 Jun 1869 d. 09 Oct 1911
m. 26 Sept 1886 in Allen Twp, La Salle, IL.
She also immigrated from Germany around 1880.
They had two daughters, Elsie A. (b. 1892, GGrandmother) and Minnie C. (b. 1888)

I look forward to any connections, Sarah

South Carolina Wallings

This message is for all those who have Walling family ties to South Carolina before 1850. We would like to invite those of you that have the Walling surname in your family tree and have roots in South Carolina pre-dating 1850 to participate in a project to help establish family relationships between early Walling families via DNA research. There are three companies that you can choose from to have your DNA tested: 23andMe.com, Ancestry.com, and familytreedna.com. No matter which company you choose, the standard fee is $99.00 to get started.

For those of you that are male and have the Walling surname with ties to South Carolina, we encourage you to order the YDNA test(Y-DNA37) from familytreedna.com. It is currently $169.00 but is well worth it. Since the Y chromosome is only passed down from male to male, this test is useful in finding paternal line cousins.

If you have any questions, please contact Tom Brown at tnmbrown @ hotmail.com.

Sorry you were offended, I gave you factual information based on 30 years of research. Death certificates do not exist for the Cherokee tribe. Detailed Cherokee family records are rare and take a great deal of time and expertise to assess; however the family of John D. Chisholm is well documented in obscure records and his grandson William is indicated as older than your ancestor and childless by the records. I suggested looking at PA records before attempting to delve into Cherokee records which are expensive and time consuming to review when a simpler answer might be in the PA record. One researcher has told me that Willaim R. Chisholm of Pennsylvania is the son of a John Chisholm who came to Pennsylvania from Scotland and settled in Bucks County. Because this is not my family I have not established this by documentation, but this seems like a more likely origin for the family. Best wishes.

Thanks. It is fairly common with Cherokee research that a lot of people want to be connected to the tribe and are very disappointed when either it turns out to be false or they can't substantiate it by records. She was hoping to find the death certificate for William Chisholm or Ignatius that would prove the relationship, but these wouldn't exist for the 19th centry and certainly not for the tribe. It would also be unusual for someone like the son of Ignatius to be able to pass for White in Pennsylvania, but stranger things have happened. The Bureau of Indian Affairs has a ton of records that unfortuantely remain unindexed and sometime real gems can be found in the claims letters and even in some court cases in the Territorial courts, but all are hard to access ... maybe some day.

walling family history and DNA

there are different family lines and apparently two major families of Wallings, one German the other from England. My branch of the family is believed to have come from the historical west riding of Yorkshire (Elmet), and first settled at Plymouth and then in north smithfield Rhode Island, personally my family did live in that same area until very recently, and many wallings/wallens do decend from this location as well. I am in the process of doing deep clade research and have found that my family line which includes the other surnames walden/wallen as interchangable/regional surnames, the my belief is , and by looking at the etymology behind the name, I believe that it is in reference to "Wealh", or the root word associated with wales, there are lots of "wal" names that I think are related ancestrally as the original inhabitants of Britain, or the "celtic Britons", so the surname could be more of an ethnic designation turned into a surname. The surname walling = wealh+ingas, meaning people of wealhs, wallen = wealh+enius, meaning place of the wealhs, and walden = wealh=dun, meaning valley of the wealhs. The interesting thing is that the eytomology matches each name and the DNA of people with these surnames matches exactly,,eluding to the understanding of our ancestors of relation to the name in that regard. I have tested as L21 and also under that as DF13, both are very prevalent in the "celtic Fringe", and I think that coupled with the possible etymology of the names suggests that one branch of the walling/wallen/walden family goes back to pre anglo-saxon Britain. if anyone would like to discuss this topic and or get involve with the DNA research please contact me, thanks

Thank you for your kind and quick response. Our family actually delineates from Richard Cheesome b 1613 London,Eng.The spouse of William R was Sarah Campbell according to 1880 census he lived His later years in Fulton Pa. Records in Gedcom show his father to be Ignatius Chisholm and mother sister of Corn Tassle daughter of Chief Corn Tassle. Family stories verbally handed down, also as basis to research. I'm not sure how you are related in the Chisholm family but am interested in knowing. I am trying to locate old photos we have but have recently moved, so have to do some looking. Thank you!
