William Hollis Wakefield was my great-great grandfather. He married Emily Sophia Lewis (not Burleson). Hollis' father was Daniel Henry Wakefield and his mother was Mary Ann Gould. Hollis' parents were divorced within six weeks after his birth. Mary Ann later remarried a man named Burleson and had a second son.

My great-grandmother was Hollis and Emily's second daughter Lottie Belle. How are you related? I have dates, etc., if you would like to share the information.

Walter Wakefield of North Littleton, Worcestershire

I am trying for find out information about what happened to Walter Wakefield of North Littleton, Worcestershire after 1891. He was born about 1867 and married Mary Ann Heath in 1886. They had 3 children named Lionel, Rosamond Winifred and Frances Elizabeth but Lionel and Frances died very young.

I am trying to trace a Walter Field who stated he was born in Littleton, Worcestershire in the 1911 census but cannot find anything about him before 1902. I am wondering if Walter Wakefield is the same Walter as all his details match except the small change to the surname. I am presuming that he left his wife and remarried in another area.

All help is much appreciated.

Jerry Field

Picture Of old home in Ireland and Plaque at the John Fleming Wakefield family site

At this site http://www.johnflemingwakefield.com/ and click on Ireland home and look at the plaque in front of the house. Does any member of this branch of the family or anyone else know if the plaque is really there and why the sign conflicts with the story of Dr. Albert Wakefield and his grant of land for dressing the Kings wounds clear in 1691? The contact does not work at the site to ask any questions! And the Nebeker's visited there but no new info? And where is the plaque in front of the house in their pictures and why add the pages from the Wakefield Memorial with no new info that contradicts it? The plaque reads Home of Robert Wakefield born 1670 Physician to the King, Aughrim, Galway, Ireland. So does this follow most histories that list birthplaces-Robert was born where? And for that matter where was Albert born? Did John Wakefield lose his land when he was a Protestant Royalist and member of the 1649 Officers-service ended in 1649-not a member of Cromwell's army. Did he get a grant of land for being loyal to the King? Or like Wakefield Memorial says-it was lost or was it really "moved" by a land grant to John in the Province of Connacht or Connaught? I would appreciate your opinions and if you have looked at early records for UK-Ireland for this family.
coetting57@hotmail.com

Re: Please help me find the parents of John Wakefield and his wife Mary "unknown" England 1598

Where is the info for John and Mary?'s children from? Does this relate to the trees that have John Wakefield married to Mary Conley-that emigrated to America and back to Ireland? Info on earlier Wakefields I have found recently-Calendars for the State Papers relating to Ireland can be found at openlibrary.org. One very interesting petition by Thomas Wakefield can be found in the volume for the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth. On page 469-1588 Jan 22-The petition of Thomas Wakefield to Burghley, for payment of . . . " The year is 1588-do you know for sure that John Wakefield was born in Ireland or do you think there is truth to ancestors were in Ireland since the Norman invasion?
In the Calendar for 1660-63, on page 163 you will find Thomas Wakefield-and you do list a Thomas Wakefield as a son and brother to John but he died in 1658 Ireland-where is this info from and where did he live or is this the alderman mentioned in the Wakefield Memorial and found in Burke's armory book? The entry for Thomas Wakefield-could be a son of Thomas? is in reference to Abstracts of forged recognizances and other deeds=listin of names underneath-maybe done using the Aldermans I.D.? Other Wakefields in this book are George-maybe your George son of JOhn? page 525 and on page 652 Henry Wakefield. Also in this book you could research about the Protestant Royalist, '49 Officers, and the Restoration Act 1660-Charles II and understand why John Wakefield is not a member of Cromwell's army and if he got a grant of land or understand some of why lands were lost that also is addressed in the previous book 1633-1647 and includes Ulster Plantation many say John Wakefield was part of and according to Wakefield Memorial the family estate was "lost?" and it "moved" to Aughrim, Galway Co. but most importantly Province of Connacht or Connaught-much history and some really contradicts what is written about and put in so many family trees. The Calendar for 1663-1665 still addresses the '49 Officers refer to pages 377-8 and 511-2 to see some of what it is about-the 1649 Officers.
Please respond to questions at coetting57@hotmail.com
Hello JW,

Frances A. Groves would have been the wife of my 2nd great grand uncle. I have her son as Frederick Down Wakefield and never made the Downing connection. Emma Downing was Frederick's grandmother. My line and yours descend from John H. Wakefield and Emma Downing of Smithfield ME. The father of your Frederick, Frederick K. Wakefield, was one of 15 children of John and Emma. I decend from William H.
You should have no trouble finding your history in Chico. Frederick settled in Durham. I visited there some years ago and also the cemetery in Chico and I found all the local Wakefields and Stanleys. I have photos. You have a cousin in the area, Tim Wakefield, who has the entire line, as do I. I'd be happy to share facts and photos and such. Please contact me directly at lvermeul@napanet.net as I've canceled my Ancestry subscription as I'm no longer finding anything new. The children of Frederick and Frances (all born and died in Chico) were William Varney b 1872, d 11/2/23, premature stillborn twins b abt. 1875, Frederick Downing b 1876, d 4/10/28, and Robert Stanley b 1882, d 1/15/46.

I have been following your posts and I do not know if you are still researching. But you are responding to another branch of Wakefields. This John Wakefield emigrated to America while your John Wakefield emigrated to Ireland! I keep running across the two of these families mixed up. So did you look at the references from Homer Wakefield's book The Wakefield Memorial? Pomfret is inaccurate also. I have seen all your posts even in the UK postings. Try looking at records in The National Archives of London-Ulster Plantation, Protestant Royalist or the 1649 Officers reference to by Homer Wakefield in the Wakefield Memorial. A person cannot be in two places. You can follow the references in the Wakefield Memorial to find records but more research is needed. Most important is the references used by Homer Wakefield for lands-John Wakefield-lost land in Ireland he acquired through his immigration to Ulster Plantation-Homer says do the 1641 Catholic Rebellion-not just Catholics by the way-Protestant Royalist not a member of Cromwell's army. But proceedings like the '49 lots, '49 arrears, etc-to Restoration Acts-King Charles II-did John Wakefied get his land back or was he granted land for his loyality to King Charles I-who JOhn Wakefield served until 1649 execution-then his service stopped hence the name 1649 Officers-page 409 John O'Hart's Landed Gentry when Cromwell came to Ireland-lists the 1649 officers. So is your Dr. Albert born in Ireland or England? And Robert is born in Ireland or England? Who was really the doctor and Dr. Albert is not recognized as the King's physcian. JohnFlemingWakefield family history site-shows a plaque in front of Wakefield home saying Home of Robert Wakefield born 1670, Physician to the King, Aughrim, Galway, Ireland. Have you found documentation for the listing of Albert, through David? And where do you think Albert through RobertI were born?
Cindy coetting57@hotmail.com

Six Generations Of Friends in Ireland(1655-1890) by Jane Marion Richardson Wakefield

There was a small meeting established at Connaught, the province to which the Irish were expelled in the Cromwellian settlement-In 1669 William Edmundson visited Connaught-his ancestors came from the North of England in Cromwell's Army-rec'd grants from him to settle in Ireland. In this book are pictures of Thomas Christy Wakefield pg 127 he married Jane Saiwdith pg 140 and they had a son Thomas C. Wakefield jr page 142. I also ran across papers in PRONI introduction click on wills estate papers and type in Wakefield or http://www.proni.gov.uk/introduction_greer_lowry_and_alexand... that tells of a business-linen And Wakefield is part of it. If this doesn't work do a search. There are references to PA- Samuel and John Morton-Elizabeth Morton's father is supposingly John Morton- that are interesting for anyone looking for an early Wakefield-Morton connection and there are records for 1770's, also, and the Alexanders, and of course Quakers.I am curious if anyone else has ran across these and if they have figured out the familes?
Cindy coetting57@hotmail.com

Re: Please help me find the parents of John Wakefield and his wife Mary "unknown" England 1598

I have decided to address your email and all the rest for this thread that I assume relate to the original request by PBrieck1935 entitled "Please help me find the parents of John Wakefield and his wife Mary "unknown" England 1598"-Does your reply refer to her family of Wakefields that are the same as is listed in the response from gammabeth1 posted Sept 15, 2012? There is some confusion for this John Wakefield with one that emigrated to America and one that married Mary Conley-listed on family trees for the Wakefield family stemming from David Wakefield b1735-PBriecks family. There is also a problem with the name listed as Pomfret-inaccurate. But my point is that does your John Wakefield b 1583 refer to the same John Wakefield b 1598 as the original posting? I do not believe PBrieck can say for sure when her John Wakefield was born. I have been researching the same family as PBrieck1935 and gammabeth1. I believe some of the history has been left out and what is posted is from the Wakefield Memorial-and no research has been done on this information. These posting although short contain nothing but what is being passed along in threads like this one and family trees that copy from one to next. I have gone back and found the records Homer Wakefield listed in his book Wakefield Memorial. He makes the assumption that John and his brother Thomas immigrated to Ireland from England and they were part of the Ulster Plantation system-do you have a Thomas born in Grvesend England?-where this is from I have no clue-does gammabeth1 or PBrieck?. Note that gammabeth has 2 Thomas Wakefields listed-Alderman Thomas is from the Wakefield Memorial and the other-where is he from-the John Wakefield that emigrated to America-1640? A record for John Wakefields service is listed in O'Hart's Land Gentry When Cromwell Came to Ireland I believe page 409. The soldiers listed are for the 1649 soldiers-not part of Cromwell's army-seen on so many family trees-they opposed Cromwell's ideology and were Protestant Royalist who remained loyal to King Charles-executed in 1649-the year the 1649 soldiers stopped serving in the Army. They list John Wakefield as dying in Ireland in 1677-where is the source or reference? Did John remain in Ireland and if so why did the family estate move to the Province of Connacht, Augrim, Galway, Ireland when his son Albert supposingly was granted land clear in 1691=2? Did the King restore the land taken from John Wakefield in the Restoration 1660 paperwork? The children listed for John and Mary-where do these come from-do the records you list show the children for John and Mary? I note that gammabeth lists that Thomas Wakefield, supposed brother of John died in Charles County Maryland-while the Wakefield Memorial says Thomas immigrated with John to Ireland and I also got a copy for the reference Homer Wakefield refers to as his burial place in Ireland-note the place is not listed although the time it took to read the postings on this thread would of allowed the time to look for the source in the Wakefield Memorial. So with most of the posts to this thread I see two families stemming from John Wakefield that is getting confused and some folks believe the Wakefield went to Ireland to America and back to Ireland-but service records for John do not mesh with this. You seem to be able to access English records-I have been researching Irish sources and now the National Archives Uk-do you think you could help figure out where records are there so they can be ordered? I believe there are records to help with this John Wakefield if people want to help research instead of listing family info and asking for the answers. In the Archives of London-Ireland's records burned in 1922 and Ireland was part of the UK-colonized by England-Plantation Books- PC 5/1-16 Calendared in the Acts of the Privy council of England, Colonial Series, 1613-1783. John O'Hart refers to the Chief Rememberance-Exchequer papers where WAkefield info is supposingly-Commonwealth Exchequer Papers SP 28 01 Jan 1640-31 Dec 1674. State Domestic Papers 1642-1660 And a very important one that might hold the answer for a Protestant Royalist Delinquent like John Wakefield-Committee for Compounding with Deliquents: Royalist Composition Papers SP 23 1643-1660-John Wakefield supposingly lost his land gained when he was part of the Ulster Plantation-Homer Wakefield surmises it was due to the Catholic Rebellion of 1641-might not be-it could be because he opposed Cromwell and did not serve him. Another source maybe someone can direct me on where to find info from PR Newman, "The 1663 List of Indigent Royalist Officers," Historical Journal, 30. (1987) in which the value of "A List of Officers Claiming to the Sixty Thousand Pounds"-this is what some Wakefield descendants believe John Wakefield accepted and then returned to England-paid for Albert's education this way-where do you suppose Dr. Albert was born? Or his son Robert born in 1670? Did Dr. Albert join the English Army in Ireland or England-was he a citizen of Ireland if he was born in Ireland-where? and he enlisted for service but not the surgeon to the King when he treated the wound? Johnhflemingwakefieldfamilyhistory site shows a plaque in front of the Wakefield home in Ireland says"Home of Robert Wakefield b1670 Physician to the King, Aughrim, Galway, Ireland"-but I still haven't gotten an answer from any other Wakefield family researchers on any questions and they list these family histories with no answers and no sources. Just thought I would ask any who have been listing info for JOhn, Albert, and Robert-and include "this is all the info I have been able to find" without listing where it was found! Throughout this thread and numerous Wakefield postings for this family-inaccurate info is now known as fact and no one knows the source just ancestry family trees and rootsweb posting or Wakefield Memorial. Also the same type of postings are in http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wakefield/459.5/mb.ashx and many of the same people and same postings-I have done quite a few myself on this branch and have shared quite a bit but I think it is time to figure out if what you post is fact or fiction-or even related to the right family!
Cindy coetting57@hotmail.com

Error in the Wakefield Memorial by Homer Wakefield

There are a lot of people researching Wakefields and their Irish roots. This is long because it is important and needs to be explained or people need to do proper references or at least look at what they copy. On page 213 of the Wakefield Memorial, Homer Wakefield writes: In The Landed Gentry When Cromwell Came to Ireland, by John O'Hart, (available at openlibrary.org and so is the Wakefield Memorial, for free) Dublin, 1884: Among the enrollments of the adjudications in favor of the 1,649 officers, formerly designed the " '49 Lots," preserved in the office of the chief, John Wakefield is enrolled." 1,649 officers is a mistake-and is very missleading and Homer Wakefield would of noticed I hope when he listed '49 lots-'49 being the date 1649. I have seen notes in family trees in ancestry and unfortunately family history sites that include these pages from the Wakefield Memorial and they seem to put in their notes that John Wakefield was a member of Cromwell's army-he is not.
Homer Wakefield lists on the same page, 213, the first offical record of a Wakefield in Ireland is this record and apprently he and others are not following along with this. You can get the same copies Homer Wakefield references-the list showing John Wakefield as one of the '49 Officers on page 373-reference used by Wakefield or records of the chief, a government office in Ireland, on page 372 you will see the reference for this list and on page 409-John Wakefield is listed. In notes I have seen the year 1637 referenced for land held by John Wakefield from this land grant-and that he served in Cromwell's Army. Using this info you will not find or understand this land grant. And it is important.
From Charles II's Irish Caviliers: the 1649 Officers and the Restoration land settlement page 410 it is pointed out for the '49 Officers-These Protestant Cavalier officers must not be confused with the parlimentarian officers who served in Ireland before 5 June 1649-some historians have incorrectly identified the '49 Officers as all those (both royalist and parliamentarian) who served in Ireland before this date. Nobody noted 'for his zeal to Cromwell' could correctly be termed a '49 Officer. The '49 officers were royalist, totally opposed to the parliamenterian ideology of Oliver Cromwell The '49 Officers-label given to those Protestant Royalist who had supported Charles II or his father in Ireland." You see now that saying John Wakefield was in Cromwell's army totally contradicts his history! If he was in Cromwell's army then he did not probably get land from being on that list. Page 410 continues to say:
The Kings declaration Nov 1660 provided for the '49 Officers
by granting them all the undisposed lands in the counties of Donegal, Leitrim, Longford and Wicklow, the undisposed land in the 'mile line'-term used to identify land stretching from the coast one mile inland in the Province of Connacht and one mile westward from the river Shannon. I will come back to this land in the Province of Connacht-listed in the land description for the Wakefield family estate.
From this and the date 1660-the Kings declaration concerning the '49 officers that John Wakefield is listed as a part of, it does not appear that there is a record for John Wakefield other than this one-even though I keep seeing dates of 1637 and earlier that might stem from the Wakefield Memorial page 214-and the assumption that two brothers were fellow colonists in Ireland. Some list this as Ulster. But I want to point out what Wakefield points out further on page 214-"Let us now turn to history in search of the conditions ad circumstances under which the family estates were first granted, surrended, and later re-granted." If you continue to read Wakefield recognizes that lands were confiscated and "that troops were sent to Ireland previous to Cromwell's arrival." on page 215 However I do not understand what Wakefield is trying to point out unless he is trying to say Wakefield land was surrended-taken by Cromwell for John Wakefield's loyality to the monarchy? But it is describing more or less the Irish Rebillion in 1641 and this makes no sense if John Wakefield was part of royal troops of King Charles sent to settle the Irish of Ulster who rose in rebellion 23rd Oct 1641-confiscation of the possessions of the old Irish chiefs in Ulster formed a confederecy to recover them-this is for a period of 7 years and mixed up with this is the Irish Civil War between the English Parlimentary forces and the adherents of King Charles I and followed by the Cromwellian Wars, for a period of about 3 years 1649-1652. Those loyal to King Charles stopped service June 1649 were not loyal to Cromwell. On page 215-Homer Wakefield jumps over this-but we know the soldiers who were loyal to King Charles I and then his son, would not be paid under Cromwell who took power from Charles-executed. So they had an arrears in pay-this is the basis for the 1649 Officers, the '49 Arrears, and the '49 lots. Kings Charles as listed previously recognized their loyality. And this continues with the Wakefield family-Protestant non-conformists-Methodists on my branch stemming from David-and William of Orange may have influenced him and his brothers-Catholics did not rule so the brothers implicated in a plot against Catholic rule is pretty questionable too. Unless they were part of the early Orange men movement or White Boys. But not recognizing John Wakefield being a Protestant Royalist is not good and ties in with the later history.
I wondered if anyone who has looked at records for the '49 officers noticed or wondered if John Wakefield might of been granted land in the "mile line" or Province of Connacht? Maybe another son got this land grant(We do not know if he had other children) and then Dr. Albert Wakefield got his land grant and it is Wakefield Village or Urraghy, Parish Clontuskert, County Galway? another land record that stands out is:
http://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VX53-KL8 on page 250-51 you will find another David Wakefield-not my ancestor that was born in 1734-born on the same family estate according to Homer Wakefield-and I assumed a village for this reason and there is a Wakefield Village where Dr. Albert Wakefield's 30 acre land grant is-and the 1824 Tithe appt record might just be for the DAvid Wakefield on page 250-Wakefield Memorial. I have been in touch with this family, too. But it is possible that Homer Wakefield failed to find a land grant or where John Wakefield was granted land because no one seems to understand why the land was granted or seem to be able to explain what land was confiscated and if they mean the Wakefields settled in Ulster and were some of the Irish who had land confiscated. What is your opinion and why not help see if there are more records for the '49 officers. I have some for the land held in trust for the '49 officers. Cindy coetting57@hotmail.com
http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/history/cromwell_se... History on Cromwell-mile line Connacht Province
http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/maps/petty_maps.htm has listings for Books of Survey & Distribution and this includes land held in trust by Capt Hamiliton for the '49 Officers-note dates and look at dates for land grant "Cromwellian Soldier"-was not
http://johnflemingwakefield.com/index.php?=1_24_Ireland-Home go to the left side Ireland home look at what the plaque says. Was it the home of Dr. Albert Wakefield given for his care of the King or could it possibly be a land grant given to John Wakefield in the Province of Connacht?
Yes, I am still researching but mostly looking for a ggggrandfather on my husband's side/his father's side. I haven't done much or found much more on the Herbes' but I know more info is out there. We still have 2 of Clara Herbes Backes Karthaus' "children" still living - Jack Karthaus is in his late 70's and his sister, Effie Lou McNamara is in her mid 80's. Both doing well despite all sorts of illnesses, etc. I will send you what I have on Angela's side if you will send me your home e-mail address. I don't know if you have all this info from before or not. I'd like you to share anything I am missing on your branches. My husband, Les Zavadil, the oldest of Kay Backes' sons loved Aunt Angela and visited with her when he could.

Thanks for posting the site to your Wakefield Pedigree. I am currently researching the same Wakefields and descent through Matthew's nephew David Wakefield who married Mary Jane or Elizabeth Wade. I have done posts concerning Matthew's son John Wakefield that married Elizabeth Alexander-I noticed you do not list her ancestors. I have done posts for the surname Alexander. I may have some info for your ancestors and some records listed at the posts mentioned for Alexander. I believe from a Franklin county, PA, history, you will find a Rev War Record Record for John Wakefield cousin to my Thomas Wakefield-I believe they served together. Initially the families went to the Juanita Valley, Penna. I do not have my copies in front of me currently but have researched your family trying to find records for immigration and records in Ireland.
I did a posting yesterday with some sites to visit for Irish records for our ancestors-John Wakefield his son Albert Wakefield. I would like to discuss John Wakefield that you have listed as being born 1614 and died in 1677. Where did you find this information? From my post yesterday I list Homer Wakefield's sources listed in the book Wakefield Memorial for the first records available for Wakefield's in Ireland. This includes the records found in John O'Hart's books and the record for John Wakefield being one of the "Foty Nine" Officers-1649-King Charles I or II-depends on where.
I would like to discuss the Irish records. Email me at coetting57@hotmail.com
Thanks, Cindy

I am currently working on the same Wakefields as you and have some current posting for Wakefields. I would love to share some info and point out some possible areas where we might find some answers in linking up families in Ireland. In the Wakefield memorial page 250-251 The ancestry for Edward and Sarah Wakefield whose father was David Wakefield-born on the same family estate- as listed for my ancestor David Wakefield who married Mary Jane or Elizabeth Wade and emigrated to America. This site http://nebekerfamilyhistory.com/nebgen/Return_to_Home_Page.h... go to the library and click on the book Wakefields-current owners plus there was a Wakefield Village-helps explain how so many born on the same family estate!
John Wakefield one of the "Forty Nine" Officers history attachment in ancestry

I keep running across an attachment in ancestry on family trees for John Wakefield and his son Dr Albert Wakefield. It brings up the Forty Nine Officers and at the same time mentions the first mention for John Wakefield is under the "date 1637 and it is likely that he was one of the Protestant colonists who fled from the presecutions which drove the Puritans to seek asylum in foreign lands, several colonies of that character being established in Ireland about 1625." How does any of this correspond with John Wakefield being in Ireland in 1637? Also listed is that the "Forty Nine" officers refers to 1,649 officers. A reference is made to "Remembrances of the Exchequer", Dub;in. I can assume that some of this is from Homer Wakefield's references in the book Wakefield Memorial page 214. But if you look-really look at the records they do not match the history you have listed!
First off look up when Cromwell went to Ireland! The mention of John Wakefield in Cromwell's army does not pertain to 1637 that is listed for a reference for it. Go to a copy of John O'Hart's "The Irish landed gentry when Cromwell came to Ireland" page 372 explains where the list is from and it is The Office of the Chief Rememberancer of the Exchequer, Dublin, Ireland. On page 409 you will find John Wakefield.
In the book Cromwell in Ireland, a history of Cromwell's Irish Campaign by Denis Murphy you will find what the "Forty-Nine Officers" refers to. Page 211-their service is from June 1644-June 5, 1649-does this look familiar? On June 7th, 1654, on behalf of these officers, an act was passed-An Act of Indemnity. The men listed the arrears for the money they should of been paid for military service between these years called "The Forty Nine Arrears". The soldiers service was reckoned in the distribution of land read on page 259. How do land transactions in the 1650's in any way lead to the first Wakefield record in Ireland being from this in 1637?
I would like to discuss this record and a few others for the Wakefield's in Ireland. And the trees that list John Wakefield and the family estate is incorrect. And their is a picture at the family history site for John Fleming Wakefield that list Robert on a sign in front of the "old Wakefield home" on that road between Aughrim and Ballinasloe-as being the doctor for the King! So I have been looking at some of these early records and would like to discuss what records exist and what they really show.
Thanks, Cindy coetting57@hotmail.com

Thank you for responding. Can we exchange a bit more information on your branch of the family? Angela Wakefield was my husband's Grandmother's sister. Grandmother was Clara Herbes Backes Karthaus. Any information would be appreciated and I can give you what I have if you are interested. Many thanks.

Thomas Wakefield son of David and Mary Elizabeth Wakefield

I have see quite a few family trees and I have left a lot of posts concerning the family of his wife-Elizabeth Morton, not the dau of John Morton, the signer, from Ridley, Chester co., Pa. Like my numerous posts say his day died from consumption unmarried. And to be honest why people keep this wrong info on their family tree is amazing to me. There isn't a record for any marriage for Thomas Wakefield who married Elizabeth Morton in Chester Co., Pa. Please if you have that record on your tree tell me your source. I have another source for their marriage-from ancestry.com US & International Marriage records Thomas Wakefield spouse Elizabeth Morton marriage year 1785 year of birth for spouse (Elizabeth) is 1765! If you get rid of the wrong family info you might find the right family. As to being related to the signer of the D of I why not try a public search at the DAR website-genealogy ancestor # A081813 John Morton b 1729 Ireland resided in New York until he moved to Baskinridge, Somerset Co., N.J. His service is listed as 1)mem of Comm of 100 2) DEL TO PROVINCIAL CONGRESS. His family members who have obtained membership are listed in his descendants records. You can find the documents to support this at ancestry.com military browse records - The refugees of 1776 from Long Island to Connecticut page 711 The Second Provincial Congress-Dec 6 to Dec 22, 1775; Feb 12 to Mar 16, 1776 and you will have to look further for the rest for this Martin but on page 1049 On May 1, 1775, the following were chosen for the City and County of New York-John Morton is on the list and this is not John Morton of Ridley, Chester Co., Pa so why aren't you trying to understand if this is your ancestor your family might of meant to be related to your Morton/Wakefield family? And there are trees on ancestry, archives, familysearch, etc-even in print-that say they descend from John Morton, signer of the D of I. Prove it. There are no records for Elizabeth Morton in Chester Co., Pa. She was even born in Ireland! Cindy coetting57@hotmail.com

Thomas Wakefield m Elizabeth Morton in 1765 and her birthdate is listed as 1765-no records from Chester Co., Pa. This is from the US & International Marriage Database in ancestry.com. Next John Morton ((39) and his wife Jane Peden Morton (26) arrived in Charleston, S.C. aboard the ship (Snow) James and Mary with their three children: David 7, John, 4, Elizabeth, 2. You do see that the ages match up when you use dates and places that do not belong to the Elizabeth, dau of the signer? The Pedens in America page 207 is very interesting and continues the "family history" of being related to the signer of the Dec of Indep-David Morton talks of his father the brother to the signer. The book is available at openlibrary for free. It should be a must read for Wakefield family researchers and Morton. Their son John Morton's Rev War record can be found in The Offical Roster of the soldiers of the American Rev buried in the state of Ohio-gives his parents-a Scotchman John Morton and his mother Irish-Jane Peden. Further down can be find a story about of course the Declaration of Indep! This is for your records if you care or want them. Want more email me. Cindy

Re: Rev John Wakefield married Mary Polly Bracken

I have been doing alot of research on Elizabeth Morton Wakefield and have sent you some info. But I wanted this to post so my question is on the parents of Elizabeth. From ancestry.com - New Jersey, Abstract of Wills, 1670-1817, but it is really a copy from the Calendar of Wills-1761-1770-299, this is supposingly done for wills in PA-look it up there, too-this states:
1761, Oct 30. Morton, Elianor, Rebeckah and ELIZABETH, of Chester Co., PA, daughter of Andrew Morton of said place, deceased. They petition (severally) that they have lands devised to them in New Jersey by will of their uncle John Morton, . . " Lib. 11, pp.89, 90.
There are records for this also in PA and so is the will of Andrew. There are also Orphan Records for the children in PA. I believe you have the family history for Morton Mortonsson-father of John Morton who is the father of John Morton, the signer. Have you tried to research this branch of the family to see if Elizabeth's parents are there? Her father dying might help explain. So what do you think?
I believe you have access to the DAR genealoy site-do a ancestor search-surname Morton first John and ancestor # A081813 and you will find a John Morton, born 1729 Ireland and died 2-4-1782 Baskinridge, Somerset Co., New Jersey, his service is listed as 1)mem of Comm of 100 2)del to provincal congress. Isn't this amazing? Then put in ancestor # A081814 and you will get John Morton, the signer and the usual descendants but records are now flagged for the problems with them. None of the other John Morton's are and he has different descendents and is in New Jersey.
Just thought you and other descendants of Elizabeth Morton Wakefield who have been doing research for years might want to take a look. Thanks,
Cindy

Elizabeth Morton Wakefield

Does anyone know who the parents of Elizabeth Morton Wakefield, b. 5 Mar 1760 in Chester County, d 9 May 1845 m. to Thomas Wakefield, son of David and Mary Jane Wade Wakefield in Chester County, 25 Sep 1779? David was born in Aughim, Galway County, Ireland, 2 Oct 1757, d. Brush Valley, Indiana County, PA 20 Nov 1844.
I have disproved with the Society of the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence that she is the dau of John Morton, the signer. His dau Elizabeth died unmarried of consumption at her brother Aaron's home in Ridley, PA. The correction is to the Pyne info or Leach MMS used by LDS, DSDI, SAR, and DAR. Thanks, Cindy
