Re: WAITS in Missouri early 1800's - 1870. Sarah wife of William Rupe

Don't know about Rupe and not much about Waits; however, many Waits settled near Piedmont, MO and some of them are still there, others moved to St. Louis and no doubt elsewhere. Once while at a cemetery near Rockford and Fairfax, MO, I saw a couple of Waits names on tombstones. This would probably bew Atchison Co or near it. The man's name was, I believe, Ransom Waits.
My husband is Asa Lee Waits, III (A. Lee); his Dad was Asa Lee, Jr.; and his Dad was Asa Lee (sometimes spelled Asalee) Waits, III. His parents and grandparents are buried in the Piedmont Cemetery and there is even a Waits Road (or Waits Valley) still just outside Piedmont.
Good luck.

Re: William Leroy Waites/Waits Madison Co. AR

I believe Mary Jane Waites Carter was my great, great grandmother. If I am following correctly, she married Charles Powell Carter, they had John Franklin Carter in 1871; he married Honor Ellen Stebbins and they had my grandfather, Clarence Carter in 1899.

There are so many discrepancies - though minor - that I wonder if I am confusing two people. So am wondering if you can clear any of this up and point me to some supporting documentation.

1. In various censuses, death certificate Mary Jane's mother's (Sarah Ann Hankins?)birthplace is listed as Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee.

2. Same trouble with her father, William's birthplace - Tennessee and Alabama.

3. I see Mary Jane's birthdate as 1851 on her headstone, but it says 1850 on her death certificate.

4. 1910 census says she could neither read nor write, 1900 census says she could do both.

5. in the 1870 census I see there is a son, William who is 1 year old, but I don't see him again in the following censuses.

6. some sources indicate an 1866 marriage to Charles Powell Carter and some sources say 1868.

Any help you can give me is most appreciated. I am pretty confident of most of my information from John Franklin Carter onward, since my grandmother recorded information in the family bible - if that's any interest to you.

Thanks - Deborah Smith

WAITS in Missouri early 1800's - 1870. Sarah wife of William Rupe

Waits researchers I need some help. I am looking for information on a Sarah WAITS Rupe who was married to William Rupe on 18 Feb 1841 in Ray County, Missouri. She had three sons (James, John and Richard) and died prior to 1850. In the 1850 census, the widow Rupe is in Atchison, Missouri.

Would appreciate any thoughts or insights you might have on Waits in Ray County Missouri in the 1840's and Waits in general who migrated to Missouri.

Thanks

Silas Waits Sr. is the man on the left. He was my grandmother's uncle. Her grandfather was William Fillmore Waites, the father of Silas. Her father was James Oscar Waites. Silas dropped the e from Waites to Waits because I am told he said (... you can't here the 'e' anyways...). Hope this is your Silas, too!

Dear cafinnegan,
I just now found your posting in response to my inquiry. Yes, I would very much like further information on my grandfather's first family. A relative had found the name of Mary Buchan, and we know that there were four sons born to the marriage, two of whom died of scarlet fever when very young. The other two surviving sons were Gordon, who married a woman from the Chicago area, I believe, and had two daughters before contracting TB. (This may be erroneous; my source is verbal only.) The other son was James Garfield, known as Garfield, who, like his father, was a Presbyterian minister.
My husband and I just returned from a trip to Europe during which we visited Cambridge, the place of Edward's birth, and found some birth and marriage records of his and his father's families.
I would be most interested in finding out more about Gordon's family.
Sincerely,
Janet Nelson Schmoll (my mother was a Waits, Edward's last child, born in 1915)
P.S. Our email address has changed - it is now williamschmoll@yahoo.com

Thank you, I may find somewhere along the line that yes, we are cousins, but right now, it isn't looking that way.

Reuben said she was over 21 and that he had raised her. They lived in Franklin co., and had children:

William (b 1847-48; 1850, 1860 in Franklin Co; 1870 in Kansas; last found 1880 Bosque Co., TX)
Leroy (b 1850; 1850, 1860 in Franklin Co; 1870 in Kansas; last found 1880 Bosque Co., TX)
Lydia (b 1852-53; age 7 in 1860; not found after)
Susan (b 1856-57; age 3 in 1860; age 14 in Kansas in 1870; not found after)
David (b 1860; age 10 in Kansas in 1870)

Of the above 5 children, only William has been located with children -- Walter L (b 1876-77); Joseph M. (b 1878-79) -- in Bosque Co., TX.

Would like to hear from persons documenting any descendants of these Waits brothers and their Sharp wives.

I'd like to hear more about William Fillmore Waites! Do you have a tree on Ancestry.com?

My maiden name is WAIT. My great grandfather dropped the "s" in WAITS. And the Revolutionary War documents have my 5th great grandfather's name as both WAITS and WAITES. How far back do you have your line?

Here's a link to my 5th ggf James WAITS (WAITES): http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10483519/person/-564422960

Other family trees show he has a lot of siblings, but I haven't proved any of them yet. Does your tree go back to any of these people?

John Waits
Birth
14 Apr 1730
Christchurch Parish, Middlesex, Virginia, USA

Death
Feb 1791
German, Fayette, Pennsylvania, USA

Family Info
Father
Richard Waits (1708-1783)(probably untrue/more DNA testing needed to find out)
Mother
Sarah Blake (1710-1742)
Spouse
Ann Delius (1730-1790) (I've also seen DeLoss)
Married 1750
Children
Christina (1750-1831)
John (1751-1780)
Richard (1752-1820) (proven DNA)
Reuben (1754-1780)
Ann (1757-)
James (1762-1855) -- my James actually 1760 (proven DNA)
Charles (1762-1843) -- moved to Ohio with James (proven DNA)
Agnes (1766-1850)

There is a DNA Study going on for WAIT/WAITS/WAITE/WAITES, so if you know any male Waits see if they'll participate! My cousin did the swab for us and we found that our line is the John Waits of Hampshire County VA, under the "Southern Wait(e)(s) Families" header. Even though my branch went West instead of South.
http://www.waitegenealogy.org/dna.htm

Something about the WAITES to WAITS comment in your post rang a bell in my head and I wonder if we're related somewhere down the line?

Kathy Wait Myers

John William Waits, his father, I have in 1800-1809 in Putnam County, Ga.
Hall and Jackson County being next to each other, there is a possibility.

Children of Paul Carrington Waits and Nancy Jane Alexander (Lamar County, Texas)

I'm looking for information specifically on their second youngest daughter, Sallie J. Waits. I can't find any information on whether she died young or if she got married. I can only find her in the 1900 census (in Lamar County, Texas) as being born circa May 1885 but then don't know what happened to her. Any information would be helpful!
