DAVENPORT, Iowa -- Helen Roberta Peterson Waage, 88, of Davenport died Monday, April 9, 2001, at her home after an extended illness.
Service at West Park Presbyterian Church, Davenport. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport.
Visitation at The Runge Mortuary in Davenport. Memorials may be made to the University of Michigan Blood/Marrow Transplantation Program, Neuroblastoma Research for Children, Ann Arbor Mich.
Mrs. Peterson was born Nov. 22, 1912, in Viola Ill., the daughter of Charles Gustave Peterson and Grace Davenport Peterson. She married Irwin William Waage of Davenport July 3, 1936. He died Dec. 18, 1989.
She lived her married life on the Waage family homestead.
She attended Augustana College in Rock Island , Ill., and she graduated with a degree in elementary education from Marycrest College in Davenport. She taught school for 27 years, including 20 years as a second grade teacher at Johnson Elementary School in Davenport.
She was a charter member of West Park Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and an elder.
She was a 50-year member of Davenport Chapter of Eastern Star No. 178 and Mohassan Caldron No. 2, a long time member of White Shrine No. 7 and Daughters of the Nile, and a charter member of Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, teachers' honorary sorority.
Her college sorority was Kappa Epsilon Nu.
She was a lifetime member of Iowa State Teachers Association and Davenport Retired Teachers Association.
She and her husband traveled throughout the United States and Europe. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, gardening, china painting, family genealogy and writing.
In 1980 she wrote the book ' Time to Remember', a cherished collection of her childhood and family memories.
Survivors include three daughters, Janet Lingren, Lincoln Neb.; Marilyn Sheahan and her husband, Jerry of Elmhurst Ill. and Marjorie Spranger of Davenport; 11 grandchildren, Diana Lingren of Lincoln, Neb., Mark Lingren and his wife, Dorothy, of Carmichael, Calif., Bruce Lingren of Lincoln, Sharon Lingren Meschi and her husband, Mansour of Moreno Valley, Calif.; Brien and Jennifer Sheahan of Elmhurst, Todd Spranger and his wife, Kim of Skandia, Mich., Mark Spranger and his wife, Mary of Bettendorf, Kim Spranger Lundry and her husband, Joe of Bettendorf; Jeff Spranger of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Libby Spranger Wilson and her husband, Steve of Cedar Rapids, Ia.; 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irwin; her sister, Ethel Shull; her brother Harry Peterson; brother-in-law, Vernon Shull; and son-in-law, Herbert Lingren.
