My Mother's maiden name was Gladys Hilda Vye-Parminter.
She was born (28/11/1924) in Bristol at Underfall Cottage on Bristol Docks. My Grandfather was a Lock Keeper and the Cottage was owned by the Port of Bristol Authority. Underfall Cottage itself was demolished years ago but the Cottage Inn on the waterfront is named after Underfall Cottage. My husband and youngest son have just spent a fasciating afternoon at Underfall Yard watching the Hydrolic Pumps my grandfather would have worked with that operate the lock system and swing bridges in Bristol's Cumberland Basin. We were able to do this as the buildings are open to the public once a year in Sept on Bristol's Doors Open Day. My mother spent most of her childhood in the cottage with her sister Iris and brothers Horace and Bert (Herbert). My mother died when I was a child (in 1967) and Iris, the last one to survive, died about 5 years ago. I am married and have two sons. As we are planning to emigrate to Canada next year, I am trying to piece together as much info as I can so that there is some family history for future generations who will grow up as Canadians. I don't really know where to start with this family tree business so if anyone out there can help please get in touch. Bert married Betty and they had 3 daughters and a son - Pauline, Julie, Valerie and Philip due to marriages and name changes. Although we all still live in the Bristol Area we've lost touch over the years (which is kind of sad) and I'd like to be in touch before we leave for Canada.
I wait in fascinated anticipation for anyone out there to reply.
