James Vrooman died 4 September 1871 according to his grave stone and is buried in small United Church Cemetery at Vroomanton in Brock Township, formerly Ontario County, now Durham Region. I visited the cemetery earlier this week. No death registration has been found, but his stone reads: IMO The Late Lieut. Col. James Vrooman who died Sept. 4, 1871: Aged 75 years. Unquote. During the War of 1812, James and his brother George were privates in the Glengary Fencibles. I haven't found where James became an officer. James was in Brock Township certainly by the 1830s. At the time, this was in the Home District. There were militia units in Upper Canada well after the War of 1812 and I'll guess that James served in one of them after his time with the Fencibles. Still guessing, but the stone probably doesn't represent a 'family myth'. My problem is finding the militia unit wherein he served and some record showing him as a lieutenant colonel. Has anyone got a book with this info? Any suggestions? I've looked over Ancestry's indexes. Thanks for any ideas.
