I've been searching for information on my great-great-great-grandfather, Captain Thomas H. Osborne, for years. The earliest record I can find of his existence is a series of letters written by an admiral in the Union Navy when his sloop, the Little Elmer (named after his son), was captured for trespassing in Mobjack Bay, Virginia. It's rumored that his boat contained ammunition being smuggled for the Confederates, which he threw overboard.

The spelling of his name is in question. Documents have been found with his last name being spelled "Osborne", "Osborn", "Asborne", and "Osbourne". It's also rumored that he changed his name from an Irish one, possibly Casey.

His birth has been found to be in 1830 (possibly on New Years Day) or 1834, in either Dublin, Ireland or England. According to a census, he immigrated in 1861. No records were found dated prior to November of 1864.

His wife was Ann Jeanette Vreeland (1838-1893), who lived in Jersey City (then called Bergen) and Bayonne, NJ. Ann's family is easy to find information on. They had three sons, Elmer, William, and Nelson. A few years after Ann died, he married Elizabeth (possibly Bishop) in Manhattan in 1896. By 1910, he was a patient at the New Jersey State Hospital at Trenton, now the Trenton Psychiatric Hospital, formerly the New Jersey State Lunatic Asylum. He died there in 1911.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks!
