I am looking for any information on the Vrabel family. My paternal great grandfather was Andrew (Ondrej) Vrabel, born August 11, 1866 in Czechoslovakia. He died on April 14, 1918 in Binghamton, NY. He married Mary Kelevaca also born in Czechoslovakia and had 2 daughters, Anna (Vrabel) Salva and Mary Vrabel. I have no information regarding his family. I know they lived in Pennsylvania (Cambria County) during the early 1900's and possibly during the late 1800's.

A map of Austria-Hungary up to 1918:

The country of Czechoslovakia in 1993 separated into Czech Republic and Slovak Republic. You need to locate a precise place of birth. Maybe you have it by now?
The surname Kelevaca just a bit off in spelling.

Don't give up. There has to be a piece of paper someplace with a place of birth. Have you located a CHURCH birth certificate for their children?
Looking in SK's phone book, www.zoznamst.sk in area code 036 (only there) a KELEC in Levice and Kuralany. Might be something to that location.
Another interesting site to look for surname:
www.geoportal.sk/roep/e.php Only for genealogical research. Have you posted on other boards?
Take a look in Ellis Island website. If not your ancestors coming thru but maybe other family members. Remember that family went to family in those old days.

Diana,
I don't know if you have kept looking or not. My grandfather, Stephen Vrabel, was from Porac, Slovakia. It is my understanding that there are alot of Vrabels from that area. I really don't know of any great aunts or uncles from my grandfather. We also had an aunt that lived in Detroit, but I think that was on my grandmothers' sister.
Good Luck!

I am still looking but just keep finding dead ends. I will not give up. We have found some papers that spell the last name as Vrable but on all of the tombstones and death certificates I have found it is Vrabel.

Refresh my memory as who, what and where and what documents were you able to find. Remember that family went to family in the old days, to a place where common language was spoken and same tradition observed. Sometimes the godparents and neighbors names on a census are a clue as to the location in "old country".

Thanks! I have my great grandfather's and great grandmother's death certificates and my paternal grandmother's birth certificate. I know my grandmother Anna was born in Cambria County, PA and had a sister named Mary. My great grandmother was also Mary, but on her headstone it says Maria. My great grandfather's name on his headstone is in Slovak and is spelled Ondrej. I am also searching Andrew. Today I was doing some research and came up with an Andrew Vrabely in Cambria Co., PA in the 1910 census. His wife was Mary and he had two daughters Anna and Mary - all of that fits with the exception of the spelling of the last name. I have never seen it with a y at the end of it. I let my paid membership to ancestry.com lapse b/c our house was severly damaged in the June 2006 floods in upstate NY so all of our money has been put into the house. Is there anyother place to search the 1910 census where it won't be blocked? This is so frustrating - Thanks for listening.
