My great grandmother was Anna Vrabecz---our records show a 'z' at the end. She was born 03 Aug 1886 in Hungary. We have records that say Pozmeg (perhaps a county?) and also records that say Czechoslovakia. Her father was Martin Vrabecz and had a brother who was Martin Junior. Could there be a connection somehow? When they came to America, Anna and Martin jr. changed their last name to Rapp.

my great grandmother is Annie Vrabec. She was born in Hungary. Her parents were Verona and Martin Vrabec. She emegrated with her brother(Martin) to Canada and was married in Michel British Columbia to Josef Stelmokes in 1905. I do not know her birthday but I do know that she disapeared after my grandfather was born. It is a real mystery because there are no family records as to where she went.

Up to 1918 the records would reflect dual monarchy Austria-Hungary. The spelling VRABEC is in Slovak grammar and VRABECZ is Magyar/Hungarian. After the fall of the empire several new countries were formed and one was Czechoslovakia which in 1993 separated into Czech Republic and Slovak Republic.

Poz could be short for Pozsony and meg for megye which together be Pozsony megye / Bratislava county now present Slovak Republic. You still need to locate a name of a town.
