Hi:

While far from an expert in Slovenian names, I would expect
Vrabecz is probably Czech in origin. The Vrabec variant may
be Slovenian - I'm uncertain). My grandparents had a farm in
central Wisconsin and nearly all of their neighbors were
immigrants from Slovenia - names like Zallar, Zevnik, Pakiz, etc.

You may wish to look at http://feefhs.org/slovenia/frg-sgsi.html.

One of the things you'll find is a list of names. I hope this is
of some help!

Vrabec

Hello,

my name is Elisabeth Wintergerst, but my mothers name of birth is "Vrabec". "Vrabec" is a very rare name. My family line comes from the north of Bohemia, a region that is called "Adlergebirge" (it means montains of the eagl).
The name Vrabec means "sparrow".

Yours,

Yes, the name Vrabec means 'sparrow' in the Slovak language. My grandfather, Andrew Vrabec, immigrated to the U.S. from Zubak, Slovakia, just east of the mountainous Moravian border in 1906.

Vrabec (my Slovak grandfather's last name) was spelled in a variety of ways in the Milwaukee phone book during the early 1900s - Wrabetz was one of the ways as that is how it was pronounced by the city's Slovaks. His ancestry goes far back into the 1700s in Slovakia.

Surnames: Wrabetz, Vrabec
Hi, I'm a cousin of Dennis Musil and researching the Wrabetz (Vrabec) name. Is there a Czech republic hometown that I can start with for the Vrabec family, to try to trace my Wrabetz ancestors? I don't think the surname is very common, so perhaps there's a connection.

Thanks!

You probably know this, but Vrabec means sparrow in Czech. I believe it is pronounced Vrah' bets.

My Vrabec grandfather came from the Republic of Slovakia around 1905-06. His mountain village of Zubak borders Moravia which is part of the Czech Republic. It is funny as the spelling Wrabetz was one version of the name printed in the Milwaukee City Directory in the 1920s. I guess it is because that is how the surname sounds when pronounced.
Unfortunately, I cannot help you beyond the above. Laura T.

Hi I am also trying to find out about my great grandmother, Annie Vrabec who was born in Hungary (somewhere that starts with a T). She emagrated to Canada and married my g.g. Josef Stelmokes. I have no clue about her because she just disapeared after my grandfather was born.
