My great-great grandmother was named Elizabeth Vose; she married Thomas Tasker in 1836 in Leyland, Lancashire, Eng. My great-great-grandfather, Thomas, was the son of a John Tasker and Elizabeth Tasker. Thomas and his brother, William, immigrated to the US in 1850. Thomas brought Elizabeth and his children to the US in 1852. I have found some information that they may have lived in Chorley or Liverpool. Thomas and Elizabeth are both buried in Steuben County, State of Indiana, USA. This is a farming community in the Midwest, about 3 hours south of Chicago. If you have any information on Elizabeth or her family, I would be most interested. Thank you.

Patricia I am fascinated by your reply, especially when you mentioned Chorley/Liverpool. I don't know much at all about my family history but my Father was born in Liverpool in 1948. His father was John Vose but I don't know where he was born etc. I can ask my Father for information if this helps. Let me know what you'd like to know. Regards Carole

Have you gotten any information on family history from your father? I found some information on the 'net that Vose is a derivation of Early French name of Vaux, a district in Normandy. Harold deVaux crossed over to England at the time of the Norman Conquest. The earliest traceable ancestor is Robert Vose (1599-1683) born in Garston, Lancashire, England. Descendants came to America possibly as early as 1625. Let me know what you find out please. Thanks.

Mary Stewart, My family is listed in your line. My grandfather was George Dane Vose of Kingfield, Maine. My father was also George Dane Vose as is my brother. My mother was Virginia Fuller-Vose (not mentioned on your site). You have several of my aunts, uncles and some cousins listed, but not our family. We are interested in doing some research of our geneology and obviously your sources could be of great help to us. Any help to get us started?

Hi, we are also interested in following up information on the Vose family in England. My connection is that I was born in Manchester in 1941 and can only trace my grandfather Vose back to his birth place in Pendleton, Lancashire in 1867. I plan to visit England this summer and will try to trace birth records back farther. I assume that the Famous Thomas Vose of Garston (b. 1565) and his son, Robert (who immigrated to the US in the early 1600's), will be relatives.... but the tracing back may be difficult. Please let me know if you have any more information... and I will post anything I find out this summer. Thanks

Re: Voses in UK?

We too are looking at UK Voses. We have traced our ggrandfather back to St Helens (near Liverpool) - William Vose, born in 1831. His three children were Fredrick, Amy and Charles - the Fredrick William moved to Pendleton, Lancashire (where he had two sons, Fredrick and Henry - the latter being my husband's father). We imagine that our Vose line goes back to the famous Thomas Vose (b. 1565) one of whose sons was the Robert Vose who took the Vose name to the USA. There are approximately 6 unaccounted for generations inbetween, but it seems logical that the descendents would have stayed around the Liverpool area until the industrialization of the 19th century. Are we cousins?

Hi John, We are most interested in your trip to the UK and your search for information. I'm sorry I didn't see your posting until now, by now you've probably been to the UK and are back?? It would have been interesting to exchange information before you went. Your situation is interesting, of course, because my husband is also John Vose, born in Manchester in 1941, whose grandfather was married to Mary Fairhurst in Pendleton in 1867. A few coincidences? Anyway, do let me know how you made out... we'll be most interested. nancy

Hi Carol, hope you are still interested in Vose history... I too am looking at the Voses now in England and trying to find the story back in time leading from William Vose born in 1831 in St. Helens. From there the family went to Pendleton, Lancashire where they had a dairy, then on to Manchester. Does any of this sound familiar? Any and all comments welcome. Thanks, nancy

Hi there I have just been updating all the info we have to include census info from UK where I can. Most of the Vose info is on my Dad's pc so I've been updating him too. I'll email you a file tonight when I get home from work. I have just been reading all the Paveley posts too. Very interesting, just off on a tangent slightly for me, sadly. My line comes from Edward Mark Vose who was an uncle of your Francis Henry Vose. He emigrated to NZ in the 1870's I'll get the correct date before I email you the file. I live in Wellington NZ. The Vose family seems to have had very strong links with the Navy and Army from what I can tell. I'd love to see some photos, we have a few of Edward and his children after they came to NZ but nothing further back that I am aware of. Claire

Re: Voses in UK?

Hello Carole I've just read your comments. I wonder if most Voses mentioned so far being in USA is perhaps because people in US generally tend to be more curious/active than their UK counterparts re geneological stuff? I googled ' Vose' out of curiosity (for some reason had vaguely assumed a 'French Connection' purely on linguistic grounds (?))since my maternal grandma's maiden name was Vose (she married and became a Dougherty; I was also told by my ma that an earlier ancestor on her side was a Mary Williamson from the county of Fife in Scotland). My grandmother and my ma (one of her daughters)lived in County Durham (coalmining/shipfitter Catholic folk, it seems). I think you mentioned Voses connected to you haling from the north-west of England - but not so very far from the north-east, I guess. I live in Birmingham, England, currently under the surname Trevallion. Take care and best wishes, Michael

My father, Albert Vose migrated from Liverpool, England to Australia when he was in his early 20's I think. I am now 42 years of age and my father is still alive. I do not know much about his family other than his sister June now resides in Croydon, England. My father resides in Melbourne as I do also. I do not know if this helps but my email is graham.vose@coastalmercantile.com.au Regards Graham
