Steven Coert emigrated to New York (New Amsterdam) from the village of Hees. (Hees was divided into Voor Hees, Hees, and Abster (sp?) Hees) Van Voorhees is translated to from outside or forward of the village of Hees)
He and his family settled and some generations stayed in New Amsterdam, but most relocated to New Jersey.
3 cousins or brothers(?) (2 named John and 1 named George) evidently relocated from New Jersey to Oakton Township Michigan. While 1 John and George remained there, the other John moved up to the Saginaw area. These 3 also have the Voorheis spelling of the name.
Tracing back to them can be challenging because of the common use of the John and George surnames in the family.
All of this was obtained 2nd hand from a cousin that is attempting to track the genealogy more formally so it all requires research and proof, something I hope to address in a few years after I retire.
