This article was written by my cousin Harvey Vokey who still resides in Spaniard's Bay. I have spoken to him several times about the name Strickland and he will admit that it is family fokelore. Additionally I would not want people to be mislead about William arriving in Newfoundland. He was in fact born here and his father Philip may or maynot have been born in Newfoundland. Regretfully no records have been found to prove it one way or the other. Philip did have a sister Sarah and possibly another sister Mary in Newfoundland so this may lead to some speculation that he was in fact born here as opposed to having immigrated. The other speculation could be that he came with his parents and siblings when he was younger. Regretfully this questions may remain unanswered. While Harvey's article is quite interesting and is a great story about old times - some facts stated in the article are untrue and regretfully are misleading about the Vokey family history.
