George Vogt of Niagara County, NY

Hello cousins,

I just joined the board and see some old and unanswered queries that are relevant to my family line, so here is some information that I have collected. I'd like to find connections and documentation for some of my loose ends. I know there are some listings at FamilySearch.org for these individuals, but I don't trust undocumented information in my tree, so I would like to find the sources for that info if possible. Most of my data comes from old census records, although I also have death certificates, obituaries, and other info for a few of the children.

My great-great-great grandfather was George Vogt of Niagara County, NY. Census records indicate he was born in PA in about 1821, and he died some time between 1866 and 1880. (A FamilySearch entry lists him as George Jacob Vogt, born in 1821 in Philadelphia to Martin Vogt, died 12 Sep 1869 in Suspension Bridge/Niagara Falls.)

He first married a woman named Matilda, who was born in about 1824 in PA. (FamilySearch lists her as Matilda Elizabeth Stever, born 20 May 1824 in Lancaster County, PA, died 25 Sep 1855 in Niagara Falls, NY.) Their children:

* Mary Jane Vogt, born June 1844 (per the 1900 census; FS says born 13 Jun 1844 in Niagara Falls, NY, died Dec 1929 in Niagara Falls) I have census records for her through 1900 where she remains unmarried living in Lewiston and Wheatfield, so perhaps she married late in life?
* George J. Vogt, born April 1849 (per the 1900 census; FS says his middle name is Jacob, born 22 Apr 1849, died 21 Feb 1919 in Niagara Falls, NY.) I have census records for him through 1900. He married a widow from Vermont named Mary, and lived in Niagara Falls with her and his two stepsons, Burton and William A. Hall.
* Matilda E. Vogt, born abt 1851 (per the 1860 and 1870 censuses; FamilySearch says her middle name is Elizabeth, born 13 May 1852 in NF, died 22 Aug 1911 in Tonawanda, Erie, NY.) I have census records for her in 1860 and 1870, and I suspect she married prior to 1880 and I just don't know her married surname.

Secondly he married Elizabeth (Bonnell?) in about 1856. Elizabeth was born in PA in 1837 (I believe she was the daughter of Jacob Bonnell), and was living in Lockport, NY with her parents in 1850. Their children:

* William H. Voght, born abt 1857 (per the 1860 census; Feb 1855 according to the 1900 census, but that is apparently inaccurate.) I have census records for him through 1920. He changed the spelling of the surname to Voght and lived in Lockport, NY. He married a woman named Elizabeth and had at least eight children, half of whom died young (the surviving children all being daughters.)
* Ida A. Voght, born 30 Apr 1859 in Niagara Falls, NY (per her death certificate.) She also changed the spelling of her surname to Voght based on the 1880 census (where she was living in Elkhart, IN) and her marriage record in Cook County, IL. She married Christopher Callan there in 1882. They had one son, James C. Callan, and lived in Chicago, IL, where she died in 1943.
* Clara Elizabeth Vogt, born June 1863 (per the 1900 census.) She married Dr. Cassius W. Gould in about 1887 and moved to Chicago, where they had three children together. He also had two children from a previous marriage. She died in Chicago in 1943. The name of one of their children was Harold Vogt Gould, so I believe she retained the original spelling of the surname.
* Frank Bonnell Voght, born 19 May 1866 in Niagara Falls or Lockport, NY (per a biography and census records.) He also changed the spelling of the surname to Voght. He married Anna Hirsch in Buffalo, NY in 1889. The lived in Buffalo and had two children. He died in 1949. This is my line of descent.

An old family letter says that Frank's father died when he "was quite young" and his middle name was his mother's maiden name. By 1880 all of the children except for Frank had dispersed, and he was living in Newfane, NY with his mother and stepfather, Joseph Sherman. Elizabeth Bonnell Vogt Sherman died in early 1899 in Lockport, NY. She is buried in Budd Cemetery in Cambria, NY; her marker reads "1837-1899, wife of Joseph A. Sherman and widow of George Vogt". FamilySearch has nothing on her or her children, but I have a copy of Elizabeth's will where she names all four of of them, and reflects the changed spelling of the surname for both of her sons.

If you have any information that ties in with this family, especially with a solid link connecting George to Martin, I'd be delighted to hear from you!

Re: George Jacob Vogt, Martin Vogt

Does anyone know what cemetery the original post in this thread is referring to? Depending on details (cemetery location, dates listed on grave markers, etc), there could be a few answers to this old query.

Martin Vogt (the immigrant from Basel) reportedly had a son named George Jacob who moved to Niagara County and died there. Martin also had a son named Martin, who had a son named George Jacob (but this Martin and most of his children moved on from Niagara County to Ohio.)

Further complicating things, George Jacob (the above-mentioned son of Martin Sr.) also had a son named George Jacob who lived in Niagara County!

Thus, we might be dealing with father/son, or siblings, or uncle/nephew, or cousins, or grandfather/grandson, or...?

I am searching for any family from Reinhard Henrich Alexander Vogt, christened 12 Feb 1843, in Guetersloh, Westfalen, Germany. His parents are Friederich Alexander Vogt and Dorothea or Doris Maria Gemeiner.

I have recently found four siblings of Reinhard: (1) Johanna Dorothea Vogt, born 18 Mar 1838; (2) Minette Margr. Josephine Vogt, born 22 Mar 1840; (3) Maria Sophia Vogt, born 15 Oct 1845; and Carl August Alexander Vogt, born 2 July 1848; all born Guetersloh, Westfalen, Prussia.

Reinhard married Mathilda Utschig Kemlage on 22 Aug 1874 in New York. Mathilda had one child from her first marriage, the child being named Leopold Louis Kemlage (he was born about 1861, New York).

I hope Reinhard and Matilda had children and someone out there is related to them. I have not been able to find this family in the 1880 U.S. census. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Mary
Hi Tim,
I haven't spoken to your dad for a few weeks - how is he doing? If you haven't already seen it, take a look at my web-site on the Vogt Family - http://www.umccross.com/vogtgallery
And, please feel free to send me any pictures you think the rest of our extended family might like to see and I will quickly add them to the site. Take care,
Jack L. Vogt

Letter written by Pvt Paul J Vogt 1952

I found in an antiques shop a letter written by Private Paul J. Vogt to his aunt, Mrs. R. E. Kern. He addressed her as "Aunt Meta" in the salutation of the letter. The letter had not been opened by a person -- there were enough holes in the envelope that the letter fell out on it's own.

Postmark on the letter is 29 Dec 1952. Return address reads:

Pvt Paul J Vogt, US 54074691
Co. A. 15th Med. tk BN, CCB, Plat 1
6th Armored Division
Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri

It is addressed to:

Mrs. R. E. Kern
Route 1 Box 297
Victoria Texas

I would like to reunite this letter with the nearest relative to either party. I will post this message in both the Vogt and Kern boards.

Re: Karl VOGT. Naturalist. born 1817 Germany.

My grandmother was a Vogt and her grandfather was from Frankfurt, Germany, (Johann Hermann Vogt), I know that the Karl Vogt and our Vogt family are related (physical similarities). Would you be able to email some family trees you may have developed linking yoyrself back to Karl Vogt, that may give me some clues as to the relationship between our families? Thanks in expectation
Email: aegreay@bigpond.com
