I was just wondering if anyone knows what the surname "Vlahos" means. Thank you.

Hello, I have some information that may be useful. I once had a long term relationship with someone with the Vlahos surname. I actually went to Greece to visit the family and found out that the name Vlahos actually "Vlachos" means Shepheard. Or one who attends to Sheep. For a woman, the name in Greece actually changes to Vlahou. You may do some research into posting international messages to find out more about the Greek origins. I can tell you that there are Vlahos families in Kallitechnoupoli Greece and in Agia Paraskevi. Should this info help, let me know. Jesus

The meaning of the name Vlahos is also slang or translated to Greek as, simple people, hick, hillbilly or peasent.

I have heard three definitions so far, people from the mountains, stupid, and now hick hillbilly.
(my Paternal Grandmother's maiden name was Vlahos)
So now it makes sense, it means someone who lives in the country hills. Hence how it got attached to stupid by hillbilly. It makes sense now... I think.

etymologically, it comes from the word for "stranger" and is the same name as the german "Wallach" and irish "Walsh" and welsh "Welsh/Welch". Vlachs are also an ethnic group that speak an ancient dialect, and that's one reason why the stupid is connotated (don't speak like a vlach) but in greek the word for stupid is vlakkos/vlakka, which spelled in greek is different than vlahos/vlachos (spelled with chi not kappa). probably more than you wanted to know--and my family changed it FROM flessas TO vlachos

So the root word is essentially foriegner? Now I don't even know if I am part Greek. What kind of foriegners, where did they come from?
|
it essentially refers to the vlachs, who were ancient people in what is now romania who intermarried with the occupying romans and speak a hybrid langauge (vlach). The vlachs live thoughout eastern europe, including greece, and were based in wallachia, romania (which is where dracula is from). However, that does not mean that you would not be greek because your name is vlahos. It means maybe someone in your family was vlach, or a foreigner, or a peasant or shepard that took the name vlahos. Greek last names are rather fluid, and many changed them in greece, especially during the war in 1821. my family was not vlach (but we had german, ukrainian, and venetian blood livign in greece) but changed the name from flessas to vlachos, and I have been told it was to escape the turks because of papaflessas (a gggg-uncle of mine) and the war of independence. more importantly, do you know where in greece your family is from, and other names in your family. Common names like vlachos or pappas won't tell you much.
