Hi everyone
have been following up the background of many of the Vizes who migrated to Australia and have discovered some connections to Irish branches of the Vize family.
Sarah Esther Vize nee Davis who married Dr William Maunsell Vize in 1824 in Dublin, migrated to Australia with at least three of her children. I have not been able to find whether Dr William also migrated or had passed away in Ireland before this. Sarah Esther died in Emerald Hill (now South Melbourne), Victoria on 4 October 1876.
Her children in Australia as follows:
Sarah Vize mother to Rosamund Vize in early 1865 in Melbourne. Later that year appears to have married Rosamund's father John Finnamore, as Rosamund was then known as Rosamund Finnamore (though later married her distant cousin and changed her name again to Vize). Sarah and John moved to Sydney in the 1870s and Sarah died there in 1900.
John Vize was struck down by a tram in George Street Sydney and later died in 1884. John was partially deaf and had mobility problems. He had never married.
Rachel Carlyle Vize died in East Melbourne in 1883. Appears to have been unmarried.
The distant cousin that Rosamund married was William Vize, the son of John Hartnett Vize and Isabella Mills. He was a pharmacist in Sydney and died in 1912. William and Rosamund had four children: William Herbert (1889-1978); Isabella Rosamund (1891-1970); Ambrose Finnamore (1894-1965); and Robert Henry (1905-1967). Descendants still living in Sydney area.
Williams brother John H Vize also migrated to Sydney and died in 1884 (same year as the other John, though later in the year). Nothing is yet known about his life in Australia.
William and John's uncle, William Vize son of Joseph Edward Vize and Mary Hartnett, migrated to Melbourne in the 1850s. He appears to be the first Vize to have migrated to Australia. He married Eliza McGurk and lived in Essendon (suburb of Melbourne). Two of their five children survived to adulthood: Mary Frances and Caroline Alice. So descendants on this line with the Vize name.
I have not yet managed to connect my Vize line with any of these (William Henry Vize - the second Vize migrant I have found). But still looking!
