Obituary from the Shullsburg Pick and Gad, Feb. 9, 1921.
Mr. James Vipond was born in
Harwood, Durham county, England on July 10, 1840.
He died at his home in Shullsburg Thursday morning
Feb. 3, at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 23 days.
He was the second of a family of five children
of John and Ann Vipond.
When but seven years of age he began work in the lead mines
in Durham county for six pence a day.
He continued to work in the mines until
manhood. He was married to Hannah Hetherington
June 3, 1869. Of this union eight children were
born: John W. of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Ambrose White
of Apple River, IL.; Joseph A. of Griffin, Canada;
Mrs. Henry Perry of Scales Mound, IL.; Mrs. Richard
Trestrail of Shullsburg; James of Scales Mound and
Burnett who lives on the old Vipond homestead
in White Oak. A son born at Leadmine died in infancy
and was buried there.
He leaves Mrs. Vipond, seven children,
eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Vipond came to America in May 1871,
and settled in Shullsburg. Mr. Vipond followed
mining here for six months. Then they moved to
New Diggings where Mr. Vipond followed mining for
six years. Then he bought a small farm at Leadmine
where the family lived four years, at the end
of which time Mr. Vipond sold out and bought
the present farm in White Oak township.
He followed farming until 1907 when he moved
to Shullsburg, where the present home was built
in 1909. He belonged to the Woodmen for thirty
one years.
Mr. Vipond was a highly respected citizen and
a gentleman in every sense of that word.
The funeral which was unusually large took
place at the Congregational church Saturday
afternoon, Feb. 5th at two o'clock.

The local Woodmen were out in full force and
marched in the procession in honor of their
friend and comrade.

Willis M. Vipond of Scales Mound;
Miss Anna Bird of Benton;
Jos. Varty and son Lester of Apple River;
Woodward Bell and wife of Darlington
and the Misses Rosie and Zella Trestrail
also of Darlington.
