There is definitely a connection. My paternal grandfather's last name was "Vik" (he immigrated from Norway. Shortly after he died, my Grandmother had the name legally changed (for herself and her two sons) to "Vick".
She was tired of people pronouncing "Vik" in foreign-sounding ways (like "veeg" or "Veek"), and like many immigrants did and still do, changed it so that it would sound more American.
Siilarly, while my grandfather's first name was Trygva, he went by "Ted". My great uncle Anders (for whom I am named) went by Andrew.
