I took a look, and I can't tell anything from your Cardozas. There isn't anything that could help me link. As a matter of fact, Cardosa appears as a "middle name" in my line, not a surname. I find some of the most confusing things about this research are that surnames didn't seem terribly important and could change for no apparent reason, the women didn't carry surnames at all, and there could be five men in one village with the exact same name. It doesn't make this easy at all. If you find a link in your research, let me know, and I will do the same.

Hi -
Sorry for the delayed response. Happy New Year! I do have a tree on ancestry. It's likely they were somehow related since Theotonio was born in Santa Barbara which is the village next to Doze Ribeiras. Happy to share my tree.

--Pam

My guess is that our families may have been very distantly related if at all. My family consisted of peasants from Doze Ribeiras, Terceira. They seem to have pretty much stayed in that village until my grandparents came to the US (Bristol, RI). My grandmother's father was Joao Cardoso da Costa, and he worked on a ship that sailed to Brazil and back.

Do you have a tree on ancestry?

Hi Louise,
I'm Pam from Boston. My great-grandfather was Theotonio Luiz Cardozo b. 1891 in sao bento angra d' heroismo terceira. He had many siblings that left the azores around 1915-1920 some to Providence RI others to Brazil. His father was Jose Luiz Cardozo, Jr. and mother was Virginia da Piedade Xavier. His father was from sao sebastiao terceira while Virginia was from the island of Pico. Some of the sibling names were Amelia, Helena, Antonio, Olivia, and Joao Luiz (Casey). Hope we have a connection.
Pam

That particular cousin has done a little research
and traces our ancestry to some Spanish immigrants who settled in that same state around
the 15th or 16th century. E-mail me and we can talk some more. :)

Hola folks! I am happy to have found you all and this site. I also seek out my heritage family history. Any help would be great so lets do this!!! This is some info I have: 1- The Victoria surname is supposedly originate fron the area of Navara in the north of Spain and southern France. 2.It's an old name but not the oldest. 3.My family is to have come from Spain to northern S. America(near Venezuela I believe). From there they moved to one island before hitting the Dominican Republic and then politically (hint-hint) run off. They then settled in "Borinquen" or Puerto Rico forthose who didn't know. From there family memebers have moved to NY City, Calf., Florida,New Mexico and much more. I will in the future fill in more details so the holes can be filled in and a clear picture can emrge. So let me here from you all. Yes, even you cuz =:) CV

Ms. Quintiliani,

I agree with you in that it is time-consuming. I had no idea how much time this would think, but also, I had no idea that I would enjoy it this much. It might be that I had done research before the era of the internet, so that expectations were derived from looking through microfilm and spending hours without any result. Today, I enjoy that at least the search is not futile, rather every day I learn a few new things about my family ancestry.

I posted some information today in response to some wonderful information on the VICTORIA family. Please read both the message and my response, as I hope the information is helpful.

My research is primarily into the OBEN family, but since they intermarried into the VICTORIA, I will probably find some useful information.

I am for now switching into the ALVARES surname, my grandfather's other surname, which will lead me to Spain. However, if information continues to come in, I will post it.

Hope we can find a relation. Please do not give up. I am doing it, although I must admit I am glad my son learned how to cook at the Boy Scouts. He has taken over the food shopping too, which means more junk food. Oh well. One day this search will come to an end or at least slow down.

P.S. There is a Cardozo Hotel on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach. Boy, do I know it!!! Nice flamenco guitarist, by the way. But, never try to flamenco on the tables, they do not like it. I forget the story behind it, but please research it. The name, that is, not the flamenco.

Cordially,
Ines Diaz-Owen

Mercedes Victoria in Guatemala

Hello. My name is Maria R. Paiz and I am looking for information on my grandfather's grandmother, named Mercedes Victoria and who lived in the Zacapa area of Guatemala at the end of the 1800s. I have no information on her or her relatives, since she was a woman and the Victoria surname was lost by the next generation and I have no clue about who her parents were. Also, all records pertaining to that region seem to have been lost in a fire, so seemingly I have nothing to go on ...except maybe YOU!

Thanks for helping, if you can.

Maria R.
I am not certain that is of help to you. I have a Sarah Herndon who married a Stephen Raleigh Victoria. He was born in 1842, Nexa, Missouri. She was born in 1846, Nexa Missouri. I found one son of theirs: a David Alexander Victoria. He was born 7 Feb. 1868, Nexa, Missouri. David married Minetta Connett, who was born 24 October 1863, in Cynthiana, Ohio. However, David Alexander Victoria died in Lebanon, Oklahoma on 26 Sept. 1942. Hopes this the correct Sarah Victoria. Wanda Cole

The surname Victoria may be one of great antiquity. In Spain yes! but also in France, Italy, and elsewhere. I am looking for a Henery Victoria who came to the shores of Lousiana in 1869/70. He had a daughter born on shipboard and they family headed north along the Mississippi river. What became of them thereafter? I would appreciate any scrap of news. Thanks, W Cole

John,
I am researching mine and my husbands family. My husband’s grandmother’s name is Bozena Viktora. She immigrated to the Chicago/Berwyn area June 2, 1903. She came from Leletice, Bohemia. Her two sisters immigrated February 10, 1905. Their names were Antonie and Barbora. The passenger record listed they came from Kancice, Bohemia. If they are any relations, please let me know. I have a box of pictures and no names.
Thanks,
Pat Kocovsky

Josephine Victoria is ringing a vague bell with me. Could it be a sister of my grandfather Joao Victoria from Bristol, RI? My mother has told stories of his sister who lived in (I thought it was) Attleboro area. There was a Clarence. I'm going to have to ask my mother for clarification. If any of this sounds familiar, please give me a shout. Thanks.

Louise

Hello. Unfortunately, I was not able to go too far back in my search as it became too time consuming. I only went as far as roughly 1800, and those family members were all in Terceira, Azores. If there is any connection to Santa Domingo, I am unaware. If you ever find a connection, I'd love to know!

Good luck!
Louise

I believe that Jackson Victoria was born in Louisiana around 1912 and I believe his mothers name was Miller but I'm not positive. If you know (or anybody else reading this) has any more info I would greatly appreciate it. Feel free to E-mail me anytime.
Thanks
