VEY William C. "Bill" Vey, 90, a resident of Worthington Hills, passed away July 4, 2010.
He was born March 31, 1920 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Eugene C. and Lucille M. Vey.
He was a 1938 graduate of Perry High School in Pittsburgh. Bill was employed by Penn-Central Airlines (later became United) during the depression.
While employed there he built and sold model airplanes, a hobby he enjoyed for a lifetime.
During WW2 he was in the Naval Aviation Program as a pilot, later serving as an instructor, test pilot and ferry pilot. He served in the South Pacific until the end of the war. Bill was employed in management for Travelers Insurance and later with Nationwide Insurance for 12 years. During this time he transferred from the U.S. Navy to the U.S. Navy Reserve with the rank of Commander.
He was a long time volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Bank. He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years and mother of his children, Joan Joyce Vey.
He is survived by his loving wife, Yvonne Ussery Vey; son, W.C. Vey, Jr. (Kathy) of Huntersville, NC; daughters, Shelia (Michael) Becker of Cincinnati, Ohio, Suellen (Jim) Eggert of Westerville, Ohio, Dr. Shauna Vey of New York, NY, and Stephanie (Clifford) Kachinske of Marietta, GA. Also surviving him are three step-children, Steve (Chris) Ussery of Powell, OH, Cindy (Al) Kautz of Hilliard, OH, and Susan (Dr. Jeff True) Graves of New Smyrna Beach, FL; and one brother, Dr. Kenneth Vey of Pittsburgh, PA.
Bill was a special grandfather to 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Bill has a number of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and a host of very dear friends.
Visitng hours are Thursday, July 8, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, 6699 N. High Street, Worthington, OH 43085.
A Funeral Mass will be said at St. Peter's Catholic Church on Smokey Row Rd. on Friday, July 9 at 10 a.m., with a viewing at 9 a.m. prior to the service.
