Tony,
I think I have the answer to your question. There never were any Vefseys. In earlier scripts and in printing, an "s" which was long and tall was used where we would use a normal "s". I have read the word Mississippi as Mifsifsippi. People who transcribe old script or type to modern type frequently do not know this. Try reading the Gospel reading at vespers at a small church in England from an old Bible. The vicar, realizing my problem, hastily changed Bibles with me, but not before the congregation broke up in laughter about the "Yank" who couldn't read the Queen's English.
