My mother is from the Spadavecchia family of Molfetta, located near Bari, Italy. In 1926 her father had a family crest and history researched and illustrated for the Spadavecchia family. Below is a loose translation from this document. Many of the family histories that were created in the early part of the last century may not be totally accurate so it may need to be researched further. Mike
The Spadavecchia family is descendant from a Roman noble family. The roots are founded in a marriage between the Spada family and the Vecchi family. Fortunes of both families were combined and the name Spadavecchia was adopted.
Tradition has it that Marino Spatha (Spada) was appointed as Duke and Governor in Italy by Leon III, the Greek Imperial Commander.
It is certain that the Spada family flourished in Terni during the 10th century. The family became strong, not only as leaders, but also as members in high positions in the Roman courts.
During the 14th century, Michelangelo Spada of Terni was transferred to Rome. He was kept in high esteem by Pop Giulio III, who by his good will attested to Michelangelo the title “Count of Collescipali.”
The Spadas, who thrived as patrons of Terni and Rome, are documented to have held the official positions of Conservatore (Registrar of Mortgages and Charges) and Caporione (head of a region in Rome) during the years 1574 to 1577.
