I do not know if the following is relevant to your research. If not, maybe you will have an opportunity to pass it along to someone looking for

Thomas Varnadoe, white, died at age 13 (of lobar pneumonia)
on October 26, 1934 at a reform school in Florida (panhandle town of Marianna, with a branch at Okeechobee)
p. 52
http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/MSNBC/Sections/NEWS/AJDocs/20121...
Kimmerle EH, Estabrook R, Wells EC, Jackson AT, 2012.
Nancy Ann Varnadoe - Billington Ragan - GA/FL

I am seeking info on my 3rd great grandfather, Billington Ragan b. 1835 and who was listed as an overseer on the Wm. G. Ponder plantation north of Tallahassee in Leon County, FL in 1860. At the time he was married to Zilpha Emily Braswell.

I have seen a couple of unsourced reports claiming that he was murdered by a slave and there was a post back in 1997 with a notation from a family Bible showing a date of death of 25 Dec 1860.

As of time of the 1870 census, his daughter, Caroline Ragan, was residing with her maternal grandparents in Thomas County, Georgia, which is adjacent to Leon County, Florida. I presume from this that both of her parents had died at some point subsequent to the 1860 census; nevertheless there are other posted trees showing a subsequent marriage by a Billington Ragan to Nancy Ann Varnadoe in 1866 and this marriage produced three children. There are also Civil War records showing a Billington Ragan in a Georgia unit who apparently survived the war.

Either the Billington Ragan who married Zilpha Emily Braswell lost his life subsequent to the 1860 census, either by murder or otherwise, or else he survived past that time and allowed his only daughter to reside with his in-laws for some reason even after his re-marriage to another woman, with whom he had three other children.

I am also wondering whether anyone has any information as to the death of Zilpha Emily Braswell subsequent to the 1860 census.

Any information that anyone has will be greatly appreciated!

It makes things easier to find if I have dates.

The fact that your people still live in SC indicates that we're probably fairly closely related.

Please send as many names and birth, marriage, death dates as you have to jymvee@yahoo.com

I have recently received a copy of my grandfather's SSN application, on which he lists he father as William Franklin STRICKLAND (DOB about 1871) and mother Mamie VARNEDOE. I am having a hard time finding much of anything for Mamie...not even sure if that was her true first name or not.

Is there a Varnedoe (Vernadeau) descendant who has her in their tree?

Varnedoe or Varnadoe

I am trying to find information on Warren Varnedoe. He was my great aunt's son. My aunt was Mary Frances Griffin Varnedoe Ray. Nothing is known about Warren's father but Mary's second husband was Raiford Ray. Warren was born in Lowndes Co., GA and moved to Jacksonville, FL before June 1917. That is the date on a WWI Draft Reg. Card (WWI DRC) for Milton Warren Varnedoe. I have his death certificate and also a copy of the original application for a social security number. The names on these two documents are Warren W. Varnedoe and Warren William Varnedoe. He may have been married but I cannot find anything to prove that except that this Milton Warren marked his WWI DRC that he was married. If anyone knows anything about this person, please contact me.

I'm not the guy you're trying to contact, but my given name is James Varnadore, Jr. There is speculation that the spelling was changed from Varnado, possibly as late as 1903 when my G'father was moved to an orphanage due to both parents dying in the flu epidemic in Charleston. I still have kin in Colleton County. I'll have to drag out my gen. info to see if anything fits.

My Father-in-law was actually a double Varnadoe, he was born to James Earnest Varnadoe Sr. and Sarah Hazel Varnadoe, Sarah Hazel died either when he was born or not to long after. He was then raised by Sarah Hazel's parents, John Rufus and Anne (Fletcher) Varnadoe. James Earnest Varnadoe Sr.'s mother I believe was Mabelle Varnadoe and I am waiting from another family member to find out what his dad's name was. If you have any information, or could direct me to find some information, please let me know. Thanks So Much!

I am looking for info on my gg-gmother. She was from MS & eloped with the overseer on her father's plantation. Her family disowned her & they moved to Bayou Teche, LA, where they lived with his family. When my g-gmother was about 2 & had an infant sister, her mother rode horseback back to MS to see her sick brother. She was in a rainstorm, caught pneumonia & died. She was married to John Elliot Beck & my g-gmother was named Mary Jane Beck. The younger sister died shortly after their mother. I'm not sure if her name was Varnadoe or Varnadore & don't know where she lived in MS. Does this story sound familiar to anyone?
