Re: Vareys from Yorkshire, England

Hey there, I am really pleased to hear that you are happy with the information i sent you. You never quite know how people are going to react when you tell them they descend from Gypsies.
It is 'Varey' probable lol, we are connected. However it is a very common name amongst romanichals. Gypsies adopted surnames wherever they went usually from landowners or other non-traveller families they lived near. quite often they translated it and kept one surname for their community and the anglicised version for the wider world. For example Petulengro in Romanus(romany lang) means blacksmith, so you get a lot of british gypsy's called Smith.
I am sorry, but I dont know the romany equivalent for Varey, but it would be nice im sure it is something exotic.
A lot of clues are in christian names. A lot had very common names like James and billy (especially). But as I mentioned in my last message my ancestors Prince and Lavinia they are very typical names. other incl. for men Ambrose, Ancelo, Shadrach. Patience, comfort and lemontina for women.
Hawker/peddlar are typical words used to record gypsies in the 19th C. So much so that the term 'hawker' is often considered to be a politically incorrect word.
Other typical ocupations to look out for are; agricultural labourer, horse dealer, gardener, tinsmith, whitesmith, chimney sweep, brush maker, peg seller.
A great number though have contradicted these stereotypes. My Fathers great uncle Prince Varey was in the RAF in the second world war and he was instrumental during the berlin airlift. He rose up high in the ranks and stayed in the RAF post war.
Stories like this are important when breaking down negative stereotypes. many people forget that gypsies fought in both world wars and have been an important fabric for all parts of society in the UK and beyond. Many of englands famous exports are from full or partial gypsy heritage, Charlie Chaplin, Michael Caine, Bob Hoskins.
There are a lot of negative stereotypes and sadly even looking at my own ancestors a lot of them ring true, but all the same they were and in many cases still are an incredibaly oppressed and persecuted people.
My fathers family were full blooded romany's, but they grew up as part of the settled community. Although they had adapted and changed their way of life a lot of traditions and contacts within the romany community stayed and I grew up alongside many full blood romany's who were very much still living a full time gypsy lifestyle.
When researching your gypsy roots you will find the more information you can uncover the more fascinating it can be. However it is not easy, because gypsies can be a very closed community.
As I said in my previous message I come from Darlington in the north east of England. This town has had a massive gypsy community for generations. many still live on authorised caravan sites, but the vast majority live in houses and really quite big ones too. Many families have made a lot of money through their entrepeneurialship in scrap metal and many other legitimate business'. Many families have come a long way from making brushes and selling pegs, which is likely to be what your ancestors were doing when they left for America.
Good luck on your journey and if you come across anything you think I can help you with you can email me at jimmy.emmerson@hotmail.co.uk.

best wishes

James

Hi, my grandmothers auntie and uncle were Prince and Lavinia (nee Mafham) Varey. They lived in Darlington co. Durham just a few miles over the Yorkshire border. Prince's family came to Darlington from richmond yorks area and from further a field before that. In fact their ancestors will have left India in around 1000 AD and travelled through europe and north africa before arriving in England probably around 1600.
You may have already guessed but the reason why your Varey's were down as Hawker and Pedlar on the census's is because they were romany Gypsies.
I am of partial romany descent and in Darlington we have a huge romany community that is probably our largest ethnic minority by some distance. Varey is one of the most common gypsy names in Darlington along with Welch, Ward, Burnside, Harrop, Stephenson.
Hope this was of some interet to you and helped you understand more about your Varey's.
some of my gypsy ancestors the Lanes went to Canada in the late 19th century. Their way of life was changing, there was not as much need for mass aggricultural labour so they either tried their chances in the new world or went to the overpopulating towns and cities to ply small trades or work in mills and factories.

best wishes

James

Aaaah yes we were definately gypsies!! I have many photos of the carriages, and people as well as the stories my grandma and great aunt told me....they even had their own language, pretty interesting! BUt it is VERY hard to make contact with the Romany gypsies as they seem to be very secretive and protective of information. My aunt and grandma were hawkers/peddlars as well in the early 1940's NY and NJ. I even have my great grandfathers peddlar license lol.

James Varey and Dina(h) Howard...my lineage, England to New York

James Varey was born abt 1844 in Manchester District, Lancashire, England. On 10 Sep 1865, in Otley, All Saints, West Yorkshire, England, he married Dina(h) Howard. She was born 8 November 1845 in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England and was the daughter of John Howard and Margaret Lowther.

James and Dina(h) had a total of 15 children, only 6 lived. They are Margaret (B: 1863, Leeds, West Yorkshire), Downey H. (Downs) (B: 1866 Hunslet, Leeds, West Yorkshire), Mary Ann (B: 1868, Leeds, West Yorkshire), Grace (B: 12 Nov 1872, Leeds, West Yorkshire), Sarah (B: 1876, Manchester District, Lancashire) and Dina (B: Oct 1881, Manchester District, Lancashire). The other 9 children, I would assume died at birth, right after birth or a very young age, which would have happened between census recordings, as to why they are not located on the English census records.

1871 Census living at 8 Albion Terrace, Leeds, St Mary Parish, Hunslet, Yorkshire, England.
James is listed age 27 and a Hawker of Earthenware and Protestan.
Dinah, his wife of age 26
Children are: Margaret, Downey, and Mary Annie.
Also listed is: John Howard, listed as the brother in law of James ... being Dinah's brother and was also a Hawker of Earthenware. He was 19.

1881 Census living at 5 Pratley Street, Ancoats, Manchester, Lancashire, England
James, age 36 (listed as being born in Manchester, Lancashire, England was listed as a horse dealer. Diana is age 35. Children are: Margaret, Downs, Mary Ann, Grace, and Sarah. Also listed is a nephew of James... John Varey. So, this tells me either John's brother died or for other reasons, his nephew is living with him. John is listed age 7.

1891 Census living 8 Willow Street, Ancoats, St John Parish, Manchester, Lancashire, England
James is 47 and listed as a Hawker.
Dina is 46. Children are: Grace, Sarah and Dina. As James Howard is listed as a grandson. He is 7. I have no idea who he is. Howard is Dina(h)'s maiden name, so how is this a grandson of James and Dina(h). Children Grace is 18, Sarah is 15 and Dina is 9. Maybe it was in error and should have said Nephew?

I find a census for 1851 England in Bolton Western, Great Bolton, Emanuel Parish, Lanchashire, England living at Browne Street a James Veray, age 30 and Mary Ann, age 24. Children are: James age 6, William age 2 and Dawns age 1 month (think Dawns should be Downs). I always look at names too... except for William... these are the names of James children as well... so he could have named his children after his father (and himself), his mother and one brother. Maybe he named one William, but that could have been a child that died...since there are 9 children I can not find information on. I believe James was the oldest. I did not see an occupation for James Veray, age 30. Could this James and Mary Ann be my James' parents?

Haven't had much luck on the 1861 census...
Now, what I find interesting is on a 1900 US Census for North Hempstead, Nassau, New York... I find:
James Varey, age 56 and he was a Peddler
Duia (spelled from transcription incorrectly, should be Dina) was age 55 and a daughter listed: Dina (also transcribed incorrectly), she was 18. This census also lists a Margaret Manning, age 2 as a granddaughter. The info on this census fits perfectly on my lineage and Margaret Manning, I believe is the daughter of Grace and Peter Manning (I'll get into that, as I found an interesting piece of the puzzle the other day!)

First, I had no idea, if the 1900 census, if they are my great grandparents, as I said, everything fits and it shows them all being born in England, except Margaret, born in Pennsylvania (US). It states that James and Dina(h) were married in 1863, but England Marriage records show 1865. The occupation matches the James from England as well. James birth date is listed as Jan 1844.

I did locate an immigration record stating a Dona (transcription error) Dina Varey arrived 18 May 1895 at age 50. Left Liverpool, England and arrived New York on the ship Etruria. I have yet to find James on their, I would think they came over together and when did their child, Dina come over? Will have to research some more, I may have missed something.

Now Grace, she is my great grandmother. She married a Peter Manning...I assume in England, as her name on the immigration papers list her as Manning. She came over with a son, Peter and daughter, Dinah. Grace arrived 20 November 1894, 6 months before her parents...if that is them that came over. She left Liverpool, England and arrived in New York on the Ship: Aurania. She is listed as a Hawker and her son Peter is 11 months and Diana is 1 month old. Family story has told me Diana died onboard ship. I have not been able to verify this, but find no other records on her in the US.

According to England Marriage Index, Grace and Peter Manning married June 1891. I have yet to locate him on ship records, still looking, as I do know, he was not on the ship with Grace. We assumed he may have died in England or they divorced or just went their separate ways.

I found record that Margaret Manning was born July 1895 in Pennsylvania. I was having a hard time with this, as Grace arrived in New York. Well, the other night, just doing some research and I don't remember how I found it, but I found a baptism record from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a Bridget Manning. She was born 6 Febrary 1897 to Peter Manning and Grace (nee) Varey. That is how the names were written! It was in a German church, St Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church. I am trying to research this church, having a hard time. I plan to make a trip to Pittsburgh to see if I can get more info, but I need to find out where in Pittsburgh this church was at, to give me an idea where they may have lived. Now, apparently, Peter came before Grace, as he was no on the ship manifest with her and the children. Was he a Hawker, did he work in the mines? When did he come over? So many questions I am trying to get answers for...that I hope a visit to Pittsburgh will answer, once I find out where this church was located!

I never knew of this child, Bridget. She is NOT on the 1900 census with Grace and her other children, Peter and Margaret. Remember, Diana was to have died on the ship coming over. Grace is also remarried on the 1900 census to my great grandfather (her second husband). Did Bridget die in Pittsburgh? Unfortunately, even if the 1890 census was available, it would not help me on Bridget, Peter or Grace. So, did Grace move to New York where her parents were living?

What makes me think the James and Dina on the 1900 census is NOT my great great grandparents, they list Margaret Manning, a granddaughter living with them, however, on the 1900 census for Grace living with her second husband, she lists Margaret age 6.

Both of these Margaret's are listed as being born in Pennsylvania... Talk of throwing a wrench in the research!

James and Dina(h)...everything matches on their census... and the area they lived in... is near where Grace is living in 1900 New York... Oh Vey! I'm going nuts here!

Also on the 1910 census, Grace is noted as having 10 children, but only 6 are living... so I know of Diana and now Bridget... who were the other 2 and where and when did they die? Was Peter Manning the father of the other 2 I know nothing of as of yet? Maybe the church records will hold more info and when did Grace go to New York?

Now, Grace's Daughter.. Margaret grew up and married a man named PRATLEY. That is all the info I have on her and him. No name or dates....YET!

As I stated, Dina(h) HOWARD Varey was the daughter of John Howard and Margaret Lowther. John and Margaret had 5 children that I am aware of: Richard, Dina(h), Charlotte, Sarah and John. See how these names played in Grace naming her children? Sarah Howard married a William Varey who was born July 1849 in Manchester District, Lancashire, England. I have no children listed for them or any other info on William. Sarah was born 19 July 1850 in Hunslet, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England.

Now, John Howard (Dina(h)'s father).. his father was Richard Howard Sr. He was married to Margaret. They also had a son, Richard Jr. I have made contact with a cousin from this line :) and she still lives in England. We are like 4th cousins once removed.

I am hoping there is someone out there searching any one of these folks I listed that can give me insight.

I want to know, the James and Dinah I found on the 1900 NEW YORK Census ... if they are my great great grandparents, if Peter Manning came to the US before Grace Varey, if the church records I found are my great grandparent, Peter and Grace... what happened to Bridget. When did Grace move to New York? Did she know anyone there if the James and Dinah I found were not her parents. Did she meet my great grandfather, her second husband in Pennsylvania or New York? Did Peter die in Pennsylvania?

So many questions... one baby step at a time. It was fluke to find the baptism records on Bridget!

Received a wonderful post on another post from a man who explained Hawker/Peddler to me... I could very well be of Romany Gypsy descent and I am not ashamed of that. That is my past, that is how my ancestors lived to make a life, a living. Found some great websites that really gave great depth of the Gypsy lineage. Really sad how they were treated, like other ethnic/regilious folks! :(

I will say, I am so grateful for all the towns, cities, states, countries, etc who put this information out there for us ... for one reason or another, can not come there personnally to research...

The search continues, the pages hopefully soon will tell the stories!

Thank you for any input you may be able to provide! Any questions, don't hesitate to ask... would love to find more kin folk out there.. I know you are there! ;)

Annmarie

I don't see why someone would take offense to know they come from Gypsy heritage. First off, that is the past in my lineage and studying genealogy of my family is what is so exciting. Learning who they were, how and where they lived, how they survived, ... I found some websites about Romany Gypsies and I found the reading very interesting. Was looking through old photos one site had posted, thinking, could one of these folks be a relative of mine (unfortunately, no names with many of the pics :( )

I read one site that gave a break down of the Gypsy and my gosh, I would never had guessed how badly they were treated. Like in any ethnic, race, cultral, whathaveyou... back ground... you have good and bad... it only takes a couple of not so nice folks to make a name for a group of people... people seem to remember all the bad things, and never the good things the group does for the good... very sad!

Not only did the Nazi's kill the Jews, they hunted down the Gypsy as well! My step grandmother was a survivor of the Halocaust and what little she told me (as she did not like to reflect back on that time of her life)... it gave me a better understanding of what they all went through, not just reading about it in a book, but hearing first hand.

So, the way I see it, one must never turn a nose upon their ancestors, regardless of their history... they are still kin, learn about them... you may find the REAL truth!

In researching the Romany Gypsy... I am wondering if Grace Varey, who married a Peter Manning, if he wasn't a Gypsy as well. And I found in Pennsylvania (Pittsburg)... a baptizism record for a little girl and it list Peter and Grace (even giving Grace's maiden name). I NEVER knew of this little girl, nor can I locate her on the 1900 census records. I do find Grace, but she is remarried (to my grandmother's father). What happened to Peter and what happened to Bridget? So, I'm doing some research on the Pittsburgh area. Did he go into mining, which was what alot of folks did at that time in that area. Did they carry on their roots and live as Gypsies? So, this journey is getting more and more exciting!

Thank you... I will keep your email handy. I know my James Varey and Dinah Howard were married in Otley, as per marriage records... but the kids and Dinah as well, were all born in the Manchester area. I still get confused LOL, on Manchester, Leeds, etc... as to which is like the town, county, etc. One day I'll get it! :)

Have a marvelous weekend and "Nais tuke" again for insight on my ancestors! (and yours!)...

Annmarie

Gives me another direction to look at though! Again, thank you! I'm sure somewhere along the VAREY lineage, we would make a connection! :)

Re: Vareys from Yorkshire, England

Hi, I don't have your VAREY in my files, however, I have VAREY that is to be from the Yorkshire area.

My James Varey (father unk and I know he had a brother, but don't know his name) married Dinah (Dina) Howard. She was the daughter of John Howard and Margaret Lowther, from the research I have been able to locate. Only proven through baptism records from St Peter Parish Church.

James and Dinah had 15 children... only 6 lived. I found this info on a census record when it asked how many children vs how many living.

The children that lived were:
Margaret, Downey H., Mary Ann, Grace, Sarah, and Dinah (Dina).

Grace is my great grandmother. She had married a Peter Manning in England and had 2 children. One child was to have died on the ship over to the US. I was told Peter died in England, but no proof.

Grace married two more times. Her second husband is my great grandfather.

Grace had 2 children with her 1st and 2nd husband and 3 with her third.

I have found James and Dinah Varey on the English census... however, I am not aware that they came to America. I found a census for 1900 of them living in New York... but I have not proven yet if they are my great great grandparents. I do not find any info on census in England past 1891.

James Varey was to be born about 1844 in Manchester District, Lancashire, England and Dinah Howard 8 Nov 1845 in Hunslet, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England.

1851 Census shows them in District 1b, Bolton Western, Great Bolton, Lancashire, England
1871 Census shows them in District 24, Hunslet, Leeds, Yorkshire, England
1881 Census shows them in District 23, Ancoats, Manchester, Lancashire, England
1891 Census shows them in District 21, Ancoats, Manchester, Lancashire, England
Then 1900 shows them in New York (if this is them... birth places, dates, age, etc. match up.

In England James was a Hawker. When Grace came over, on the ships manifest, says she is a Hawker. On the 1900 Census for James and Dinah Varey, it shows his occupation as a Peddler.

If anything rings a bell with you, would love to hear from you!

Thank you so much... Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Ann

Loretta,
Thanks for your response. My g.g.g. grandfather was John Varey born 1795 in Cottingham to a Brian and Jane Varey. After John Varey married a Mary ?, they lived in North Dalton, Yorkshire where there 5 children were born before immigrating to Ontario, Canada in 1834. Perhaps there is some type of connection. I do know there are several hundred Vareys in the Yorkshire area.
Best of luck in your research.
Cal

Hi Cal - that's very interesting. I need to get further back than the 1851 census - my Vareys were farming in Huntington and George Vary (later family members Varey) was born in Huntington in 1795 (near York), so connections with other Yorkshire areas are quite likely. Need to investigate more!

Hello again, Sandra
I am not familiar with either the William or the Henry you have mentioned in your e-mail. What are the birthdates that you have for each of these gentlemen? They may be related to my John Varey through one of his siblings in Cottingham.
From what I have been able to locate through research, Brian and Jane Varey (John Varey's parents) had the following children - Robert "Tom" born 1781 in Bridlington; Mary, born 1786 in Kilham; Jane, born 1790 in Cottingham; Brian, born 1794 in Cottingham; John, born 1795 in Cottingham; Brian, born 1798 in Cottingham; George, born 1801 in Cottingham; and Hannah, born 1805 in Cottingham.
John moved to Canada with his family in 1832. Let me know if this is of any help to you.
Have you gone on-line to the IGI index found at www.familysearch.org? It is most helpful.
Good luck in your searching, Cal

Hi. My tree is just getting started (and thank you for the additional information), because for some time now I've been chasing Thomas Richard Coates's parents, whom I couldn't find for love nor money. Then came the breakthrough, which is finding that TR's mother was Elizabeth Vary, and he was raised by his aunt Jane Smithson nee Vary and her husband Thomas Smithson in Huntington. So I've been pursuing the Vary line literally for only a week.

I did try to contact you via the message board but through your profile, which should enable me to send you a message without mailing it to you -- it should be forwarded by ancestry.com's internal "postal" service. What you do is to click on sender's profile and then "send a message to this person" or some such wording. If you don't get it in a day or two, post another message here and I will figure out a way to do this!

Laurie Kirby

George was born 4 Nov 1799 in Huntington. I recently found their parents: John Vary and Jane Jowett. John born about 1756 in Huntington, listed in the 1823 Bulmer's Directory for Huntington as blacksmith and victualler.

Hello Beryl - you may know that in the churchyard at All Saints church, Huntington, there is a memorial to Matthew Vary and his wife, (Mary Milner formerly Crispin if memory serves) put up by all their children - it is getting a bit corrupted but you can make most of it out. I'll put it into my family tree - I took photos of the Vary/Varey graves last year - and you should be able to see it in the phots pages.
Loretta

I think I have most of the brothers, sisters etc. - Edith, Mark, Clarence, Floyd, Truman, Wilmot etc. but I have several photos and I'm not sure which generation they are. Would appreciate any help from other descendents of this family.

These three brothers Thomas, Noah and John were my great x 3 grandmother Jane's brothers. Thomas bc1842 Cherry Burton died in Minnesota, Noah bc 1846 Cherry Burton died in Manitoba and John b c 1849 Cherry Burton died in Oklahoma city. They were the children of John Vary b 1812 South Dalton and Mary Watson b 1810 Cherry Burton.
Further to my earlier post -
Anette - Thomas Noah and John (1844, 46 and 51) were all born in Cherry Burton Yorkshire. The older two immigrated to Canada. John ended up in the US (I am not sure if he went to Canada first). Noah ended up in the US too. I am not sure if Thomas stayed in Canada or also went to the US.

Cal - George Vary (15 Sep 1822) is the Uncle of Thomas, Noah and John. George was born in North Dalton Yorkshire the seventh child of Richard Vary #1. (there are so many Richards in my tree that we have numbered them) Richards brother John (21 Sep 1812)is the father of those three boys that Annette says burnt down the church. (these boys are my 2nd cousins 4 times removed) I have the birthdates of all of these boys and their siblings, their parents, grandparents, great grandparents, and great great grandparents. If you require these details please email me: rebeccavary@hotmail.com I will understand if you have already worked all this out considering how long ago your original post was - but if you could contact me anyway i would like to know your information from the Canadian side.

George Vary born 15 sep 1822 is my first cousin five times removed. Aside from his birth, the only other information I have of him is a 1871 passenger list to Ontario. I have traced the Vary family nine generations back with links to Yorkshire, Canada, the US, South Africa and Australia. I would be very interested to hear from you and would like to learn more about George and the Canadian links.
Rebecca Vary
Australia
rebeccavary@hotmail.com

I am looking for connections to HANNAH VAREY, born in Wainfleet twp. Ontario, in Regional Niagara, which includes St. Catharines. She married James Robinson, born 1830 Wainfleet twp. They had Vernon Hamilton Robinson born Marrch 21, 1855, died August 11, 1921, Niagara Falls ON. I see a note for ANNAH Varey -- can anyone confirm a variation or send info to Sharon@itcro.ca (I'm on the three-day trial, so please respond to my email.)
VAREY

My grandfather was shown in the 1880 census, Rochester, NY, as Henry VAREY. It is the only time I have seen that that name was used for him. After that, it was shown as VAN AVERY. Does anyone have a family member by the name of Henry Charles VAREY? He was born about 1870, maybe 1869. He said he was born in Ontario, Canada, but I have been unable to find records for him there. Apparently orphaned, a foster mother raised him and other waifs, including my grandmother.

I will be grateful for any help on this family. Thanks in advance for help.

Joyce Van Avery Franke
rjfranke@worldnet.att.net
