Viola Madsen Vap died Wednesday November 14, in Boulder Community Hospital from heart disease. She was 87.
She was born in 1914 in McDonald, Kansas to Edward and Matilda (Hokenson) Madsen. Upon graduation from high school she moved to Herndon, Kansas where she taught school until her marriage to John A. Vap May 8, 1937. They lived on a farm in Atwood, Kansas until their move to Boulder, Colorado in 1949.
In Boulder, Mrs. Vap was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Altar Society, and Mount Gertrude's Acadamy Mothers Club.
She remained vibrant and active throughout her life being employed by the University of Colorado Deans Office of Arts and Sciences, Boulder Travel King from 1974 until 1997, and later with Centennial conferences where she began her employ at an active 78 years old and continued through her early 80's.
Mrs. Vap enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, jig saw puzzles, attending cultural events, music, playing the organ, and being a virbrant presence in all she attended.
Survivors include her daughters; Vanice J. Famme of Arlington, VA and Llewellyn Dee Plache of Boulder,CO. Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and a grateful and loving Goldie.
She was preceded in death by her husband John Vap in 1991.
Contributions can be made to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley or to the Rawlins County Historical Moravian church in Atwood, Kansas.
A vigil and rosary were held Nov. 15 at Boulder.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 17 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood with Father Damian Richards as celebrant.
The lector was Vicki Schmidt and Eucharistic ministers were Lillian Green, Marjorie Horinek and Helen Horinek. The family presented the offertory gifts and the Mass servers were Justin Chessmore and Frank Easterday.
Diane Sis was organist, with the Sacred Heart Choir and congregation providing the music. Special music was done by Steve Woody singing “Ave Maria.”
Casket bearers were Jerry Vap, Joe Famme, John Vap, Jack McKinley, Kurt Plache, Chris Famme, J. B. Famme, Joe Schmidt and Tom Madsen.
Graveside services and interment followed at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Atwood.
Williams Funeral Home of Atwood was in charge of the arrangements.
